This skill is the preferred substitute to Heroic Strike when playing as a Fury warrior in a raid situation. It lacks the innately higher aggro generation of Heroic Strike, which can spell death for a non-tank in a raid. With 3/3 points in Imp. Cleave, this skill can rival the damage of Heroic Strike.

In my opinion, the 2.4 change "Cleave: This ability will no longer strike any secondary target which is under the effect of crowd-control spells that break on taking damage. i.e. Polymorph, Sap, etc." is just an excuse to be lazy.

I use cleave all the time tanking with CC, i'm just careful and move back. Not hard, they are just making this for people too lazy/ignorant to play well.

EDIT for live 2.4: This change seems to have been taken out, so i'll go back to dragging things back and getting initial aggro with demo and spreading sunders just like before.

Dps warriors who use cleave on a single target for a rage sink (heroic strike causes extra threat) will now be able to properly dps near crowd controlled targets.

The Cleave change, while still listed in the release notes here on Wowhead (at the time of writing this) is not present in the official 2.4 release notes so I assume they decided to not go live with it?

I have not yet had a chance to verify this.

EDIT: the official patch notes on the European site, http://www.wow-europe.com/en/patchnotes/index.html, does include this change, but the US site, http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/patchnotes/, does not list it. The change was also not included in the patch notes displayed by the patcher application.

Yah for Warrior aoe! About a week ago i was raiding KZ with my guild for badges and when we downed illhoof and checked the dps meters.... everyone was amazed i outdpsed the lock ... BY 3X HIS DPS!! lol fury warr aoe ( sweeping strikes, cleave, and WW ) FTW XD

Btw- I did 36% of the dmg

for fury warriors using TG cleave will become there new heroic strike because with the cleave glyph it will cost the same amount of rage 15 more crit rating from incite and +488.4 damage hitting 2 targets! this will be deadly in pvp

Originally this ability was named "Saurfang". However Saurfang wasn't happy about this. As Servers kept getting mysteriously saurfanged, Blizzard had no choice but to rename it.

Thus the word "cleave" was born.

using a spec like this; https://www.wowhead.com/cata/talent#LN0c0fhZhxe0V0uMeRVzAo:MoG0mz i used to top the meters in hcs doing 4k+ dps easily. They 3 traget cleave and the WW will own them, and if u need help with more adds than 4 use thunder clap for some quick abt 800 AoE atk.

The animation on this annoys me, as it clearly shows you swing your weapon ALL AROUND you yet only 2 targets infront are affected. Pretty lame.

This is Saurfang's auto attack. When used by him, there are numerous effects.
1. It destroys your account.
2. It does not affect Horde.
3. It can be used from any angle.
4. It affects everyone he can attack.
5. It is what his wands and bows shoot. (As if he needed them)
6. It reduced Power Word: Shield from the power of Divine Shield to what it now is.
7. It made gnomes unable to be priests and paladins for a long time, and they still cannot be paladins.
8. It can be used at any range.
9. It applys a poison that makes you feel you are being continouosly cleaved in the face. No one has been affected by this, however, because this is always fatal in Saurfang's hands.
Downrate me if you wish, but IF YOU DO YOU WILL GET SLAIN BY THIS!

Heroic strike and Cleave are off the GCD.
Both abilities share a 3 second cooldown.
Both abilities tie into macros just fine, as they did before patch 4.0.1.

This is the macro I use when tanking trash. Triggers Inner Rage (for faster cleaving) and Revenge when available.

Best used with Glyph of Cleaving and Improved Revenge, then spam away.

Also disables the 'Ability not ready' text and sound.

So some math concerning using Cleave with Meat Cleaver vs. Heroic Strike.

Cleave applies the following damage to two (three if glyphed) enemies by default: 6+.45a (effective damage output: multiply by two or three, so 12+.9a or 18+1.35a)

Heroic Strike applies the following damage to one enemy: 8+.6a

In their default state, Heroic Strike is much better against single targets, and Cleave against multiple targets (outputting 1.5x damage by default). Now, let's take into account the talent, Meat Cleaver, which, if fully activated and talented up, adds 30% to cleave damage over the course of four casts (I say four, because you won't reap the benefits until the fourth cleave). The damage output of using Cleave against a mob, at that point, is absurd by comparison to Heroic Strike:

Assuming 10,000 AP (decent number for a Fury Warrior in 4.3, maybe a little low - I play Arms for DPS):

A couple things worth noting: after four attacks against a single target, Heroic Strike is clearly the winner in terms of damage output, yielding 24,032 damage. Meat Cleaver does help Cleave, but not enough to make it a better option, as against a single target, it will only yield 20,728 over four attacks (up from 18,024 without the talent). It's also important to note that the maximum damage output you can get from Meat Cleaver's stacking buff is only 5858 against a single target, versus 6008 from Heroic Strike, so even if it pans out, it will still be more worthwhile to use Heroic Strike against a single target.

However, it is ALSO worth noting that, even with only one extra target, using Cleave is still more potent than Heroic Strike, yielding 1.5x the damage.

It should also be pointed out that this doesn't include considerations for talents like Incite, which increases the critical strike chance of Heroic Strike by 15%, and so makes it slightly more potent. This also doesn't touch the fact that Meat Cleaver can also also apply to Whirlwind, which scales infinitely depending on how many NPCs you have in that particular pull. Cleave still out-hits Whirlwind for smaller mobs, though it's hard to say exactly how many enemies would need to be around for Whirlwind to be more potent (it is also based on weapon damage, not attack power, so varies from strike to strike). Meat Cleaver makes it more potent, to be sure, but given a choice between Cleave and Whirlwind, unless there are five or six enemies left standing, I would go with Cleave (though they do not share any kind of cooldown, so it may be inconsequential).

if you do sweeping strikes and cleave you will hit 4 times. so if there are 2 targets you hit them both 2 times. or if there are 4 you hit them all one time

Wouldn't you hit at-least 120% Harder, and even MORE if you crit? Beats me why people dont use this...

Bonus damage with rank 6 is 70dmg, so, 120% more becomes weapon damage +154. With 3 talent points you do 84 more damage per cleave. Lets face it, is it really worth the 3 points?
If you hit two guys with the cleave, witch you normally would try to do, then it's 168dmg more then you would get without the 3 talent points.

I'm just throwing around numbers here, trying to figure out what to do myself :)

Sweeping strikes + Cleave would give 5 ekstra attacks. 3 cleave = 6+5 attacks = 11 attacks x84dmg per attack = 924dmg.

So..in a sweeping strikes + cleave combo the 3 points will amount to 924 ekstra damage. Not counting crits, witch will happen at least 1/4 of the time. so.. 11/4 = 2.75 x 84 = 231dmg more from the crit.

Correct me if I'm wrong, I might remember incorrectly. Crits are about twice the damage usually, isnt it?

Well, if I'm right, then we will get 924+231=1155 more damage out of that combo. and we could use that combo every 30secs if people keep attacking us 2 at a time.

So, in conclusion, 1155 more burst damage every 30secs..well, imho its worth it.

EDIT:
..maybe. if you compare it with 3/5 points in 2H weapon damage, it will come short I suppose. 3% overall dmg is better then 1k damage every 30secs. Probably.. :)

ATTENTION

When you use Cleave in conjunction with Sweeping Strikes it will hit BOTH targets 2 times.

I don't know why the guy who said that up above had his comment grayed out yet all the dorks asking that didn't get grayed out.

!Again CLEAVE WILL HIT 4 TIMES WITH SS's!

It will also only hit with your main-hand, it is not like Whirlwind which hits with both weapons as of patch 2.3.

Which sucks for us Fury guys, it is better to just BT and use WW with SS.

Cleave is very good for tanks with extra rage on hand. Just spam it and it will aggro 2 enemies at once.

It draws about 135 points of hate while HS does about 180. So against 2 it is better than just sundering or HS'ing.
