I have broken down all of the current masteries into two categories: unique, interesting masteries and flat bonus masteries.

Why this mastery needs to be more interesting (tldr: it's boring and should be made fun, like Blizzard promised)
Blizzard’s main reasoning behind the recent talent changes was to eliminate the ‘boring’ talents that, for example, only increased damage by x%. The mastery system was supposed to provide each spec with a fun, unique mechanic that would replace some of the boring talents while still providing a damage increase. I feel that Blizzard dropped the ball on this entire system. As you can see, only half of the existing specs got ‘interesting’ mastery mechanisms; the rest still only increase the effectiveness of certain abilities by x%. In the end, all of the masteries provide the exact same amount of increase (in theory), but I think for the amount of money we are all paying them, Blizzard should give all specs interesting mechanism.

Even though the feral mastery is a completely flat bonus I still find it interesting because it changes with your form. Go from heavy hitting dps cat to a bear that can take heavy hits in the blink of an eye.

Savage Defense absorbs 35% of your AP.
Are mastery poinst increasing of (35 + MP*4) %
or 35 + ( 35*(MP*0.04)) %

ex : 10MP = 40%
does it means we absorb 75% or 49% ?

My mastery currently increases the absorb by 57% I did a test and my attack power was 10044 unbuffed and my absorbs were 5531. Now, a 57% increase to the base 35% would be about 54.95? and 55% of 10044 attack power is ridiculously close to the 5531 buffs that I was gaining, so yeah.. We established two things.

A). My math sucks. and,
B) Mastery increases the base absorb (get enough mastery to increase the absorb by 100% and you'll be absorbing 70% as opposed to the base 35%)

I'm not sure if mastery is really worth it, but it'll probably get better when stats are more readily available on gear.

The mastery only buffs the 35% of Savage Defense with it's percentage. Not your total AP by the value listed.
But you could also say each point of mastery increases your shield strength by an additional 1.4% of your total AP. (this + 35% of SavDef = total value)

Calculation:
35% * ( 1 + * )

same as:
35% * ( 1 + 4% * MasteryPointsInCharFrame ) -> Character Frame shows data less accurate.

So for example:
-1 point mastery buffs by 4%
-you've got 15.67 mastery in your character frame

0.35 * ( 1 + 0.04 * 15.67 ) = 0.56938
So 56,938% of your AP are the shield's absorb value once Savage Defenses procs.

But know this:
Actually the NPCs get stronger than the shield even when you go for mastery and stamina (mastery to buff the shield, stam to get more Vengeance AP converted for an even stronger shield). Also the shield procs unreliable, doesn't stack and can only be aquired once every GCD (1.5s) unless you're lucky with auto hit and assuming you get the 50:50 chance to proc.

It's the pre-nerfed block shield design but in a bad way that we druids have. In 3-4 patches the shield needs to be redesigned or tank druids won't stand a chance against the harder and harder hitting enemies. Unless it's a boss where our shield can actually be kept up better than vs trash.

Additionally lots of leather gear has haste rating as 2nd rating type on it which isn't converted into dodge or mastery by some talent which needs to be reworked too.

Also funny how thorns now scale with AP which is useless because we can't use them in cat or bear form which are the only forms where we get AP out of agility.
Aaand that Pulverize removes Lacerate dots. Imagine if Shield Slam would remove Devastate stacks. Who'd want that ?

I'm curious if the Devs will ever wake up... I hope they will. Design not going hand in hand with common sense just isn't what I prefer to play with.

Some old posts in the forums claim that when Savage Defense is up you no longer gain

-vengeance

So I went to Hyjal, grabbed one of the NPCs there and tested that.
Result:
You DO gain rage even when Savage Defense is up.
You DO gain vengeance even when Savage Defense is up.

I noticed that there is some confusion about this mastery, as to what affects what. I know 'SoooWhoCares' up top rattled off a bunch of numbers, but they can be a little confusing.

Here is Savage Defense for dummies.

The mastery is a flat 35% of your current AP. As vengeance stacks, of course your shield will be stronger due to increased AP.

Increasing your mastery is x% of 35.

Example:
Mastery is 80%.
35 * 0.80 = 28.
35 + 28 = 63.

Mastery increases Savage Defense to 63% of the current AP.
