the range says anywhere, does this mean, i can be on 1 side of Eots and the person i cast it on is on the other side, i will still get the effect?

Just tested it, you can cast this on someone and spellsteal it. Unfortunately like all spellstolen abillities, it only lasts 2 minutes.

the following needs confirmation:
can u use this on a lock's shackled demon and then unshackle and spell steal
or
on an MCed pvp or mob and then spellsteal
or
on an engine cap MCed pvp or mob and then spellsteal
or
a ^&*!ed off hunter pet after it hasn't eaten anything for a long time and then spellsteal when it turns

Can anyone please confirm that this definately works on heals. I've had about 3 different healers tell me in heroic runs that there's no point putting it on them due to it only effecting offensive spells.

You and another mage can cast Focus Magic on each other, and you'll both get 6% crit (3% from the buff, 3% from the proc).

As stupid as this sounds, it IS functional to toss on a rogue since their poisons count as spells.

Ran Naxx with no other casts and two holy priests (no pally), tossed it on a rogue and had it proc pretty often.

Would this alos proc off of, say, a hunter? As survival, if specced right will have some insane amount of crits especially from explosive shot. Also how long does this buff last? Is it a one cast, one proc deal or does it continue to proc for a set amount of time?

As of 3.1, the best class to cast Focus Magic on is undoubtedly a Shadow Priest. While Shadow Priests typically have a relatively low critical rating, they now have more simultaneously active spells with the ability to crit than any other class.

Three dots (Vampiric Touch, SW: Pain, Devouring Plague) ticking every two seconds, plus Mind Flay ticking every one second on average (assuming 400 haste, Mind Flay ticks 3 times in 2.66 seconds which makes up for the cast time of Mind Blast, Vampiric Touch, and the GCDs) and Mind Blast every 5.5 seconds means that at 30% crit (which is modest with raid buffs), a priest will crit more than once every two seconds. A Frostfire mage with 100% crit couldn't match that.

Putting it on a healer is also a bad idea. Despite the fact that Shaman and Paladins have high critical rating, they simply don't cast as often as a Priest's dots tick. A shaman casting chain heal 100% of the time (hitting 3 targets every single time) would need close to 50% crit to match the Shadow Priest in terms of crits per second. And as much as you might think Shaman just spam chain heal, they don't.

What's more, even when a Priest is moving their dots are ticking. I've never seen a Shaman casting Chain Heal on the move.

If you want the highest personal dps buff (i.e. 100% uptime on the buff yourself), put it on a ele-sham. 100% guaranteed crit-chance every 6(?) seconds.

As I mentioned, a Shadow Priest with 30% crit has 100% chance to crit more than once every 2 seconds, making it better than an Elemental Shaman. Also like I mentioned, Shadow Priests dots tick while moving, while just about every other class needs to stand still and cast in order to crit.

I certainly won't argue that a Priest gains more from crit than a Mage, but that wasn't the point of my post. I was simply stating that as of 3.1, Shadow Priests will provide the greatest uptime of the Focus Magic buff.

from the raid perspective you have to consider who does it serve the most (to answer your question)

what do you need during an encounter? heal or dps?

heal: depends on ae damage and mt damage. in ulduar you face alot of ae dmg, and atleast we had no problems with mt healing. thereforde ill put it allways on a restoshaman when heal is needed.

dps: obvious who benefits the most: mage -> boomkin -> ele / lock

As of resent Patches (4.0.1.-4.0.3.) DECEMBER 2010
Focus magic no longer looks to able to be cast on Non-party members, which means that you need to be grouped for it to work. You can No longer cast it on passer-byers for a quick piggy-back buff effect. Though it can still be cast on your magic clones.

ADDITIONALLY: Once you disband with the Target of your Focus Magic link, Both yours and the targets Focus Magic buff Drops that instant.
