anti caster shell. if caster attacks you, hide in the smoke. if he tries to go for you and fear/knock you out, run out. he will never get to you, until the cloud fades!

I find it interesting that people seem to look at this with defensive viability in mind. Me? I'm going to love using this to seal off an enemy I'm burning down from their healers and getting up close and personal with our own little smoke cloud in the battleground. Just me, the enemy, and my daggers. Then the smoke clears, it'll just be their body dropping to the ground: I'll have Vanished and already be moving on to the next target.

"Enemies are unable to target into or out of the smoke cloud." That makes it look like enemies are able to target within the smoke. That's kind of weird - someone inside the cloud can't see someone outside it even if they're just one yard from the edge, but they can see someone nine yards away on the opposite side of the cloud? - but it would be extremely OP otherwise, I guess. Pity.

I wonder how this will work in PvE. It's hard to believe it would work on, for example, boss fights with adds that can heal, or casters with one big ability that's really hard to survive. But on the other hand, some abilities that work differently in PvE and PvP say so right on them - I'm mainly thinking of the DK's new ability Dark Simulacrum - and this one doesn't, so maybe it does work in most PvE situations. That will be moderately useful in a lot of encounters and I'm sure there must be some encounter, somewhere, in which it's completely broken.

On the other hand, note that it only affects targeting. Therefore, an aoe attack on the cloud should still hit whoever is inside it. Therefore, everyone still has plenty of ways of stunning, freezing, knocking back or just plain damaging anyone inside the cloud. Therefore, I think Stilus is right - the primary use of this ability is not escaping trouble, but using it offensively.

For those that don't understand much within yards in WoW, if you've ever used your Distract, this will have the same radius which is massive. For those of you that are Engineers, the Frag Belt gives a 3 yard radius so you can see the comparison.

Enemies are unable to target into or out of the smoke cloud.

Works as advertised, popped it 10 yds from a pack of hordies, they stood there for a few seconds unable to do anything to me until they physically ran into the cloud. And then I ran out of it, again making them unable to do anything to me.

Friendly spells are unaffected by it obviously.

It does say "enemies" and unless your healer isn't of the enemy kind, I think you can get heals inside the cloud :P

This can probably be used in PvE to protect members of the raid from adds and such for a short while.

Use on slimes at Putricied fight, who they gonna attack then :D

It will probably work like a Consecration from a paladain. You "drop" it on the ground and it stays there for 10 sec.

An important point - unaffected by Diminshing returns.
This will give you 10sec of CC as long as you keep them inside it, regardless of before or after your stun combo.

Alll i can think about is how ret rogue is going to be insanely interesting to try out. I have a rogue partner, and we've been in it through thick and thin, since patches and expacs long past, we always find a way to get to 1800 and beyond, but this cata season may just very well be our time, lol specially with smoke bomb (kinda sad we're gunna revolve game around 1 move), but yea just get them low, then pop everything you have. ToT + Vendetta + Zealotry+ Avenging Wrath+ Guardian of the Ancient Kings= WTF"oh that's what happened"

this spell is truly amazing, think about these arena scenarios, ele shammy earthbind totem someone inside if for a kill, druid also rooting someone inside for a kill, or the best yet: priest is getting hammered on my a warrior and is out of defensive CDs, he casts leap of faith on his rogue buddy who then casts smoke bomb on top of the priest, giving him time to heal up while hes untargetable. my only concern is will bladestorm hit people inside?

Stuff you should know:

-Everyone inside gets a debuff while in the smoke bomb.
-This debuff doesn't stay on forever even when they leave the cloud (like flare... cough cough).
-Enemies of the rogue can't cast into or out of the smoke bomb; if they're in, they only cast in; if out, other way around.
-Friendly targets of the rogue are unaffected; they can dps people in the smoke bomb and heal them too.
-AoE attacks (Shadowfury, Flamestrike) can still be placed in the area of the smoke and hit everyone inside.
-AoE heals (Tranquility, Healing Rain) work the same way.
-8 yards from end to end.
-Because you're in the middle of it when you cast it, enemies have to move, at most, 4 yards to get out.
-Not very easy to see at first, but the debuff goes up instantly so look for that.
-Sub rogues can use Glyph of Preparation to have Prep reset the cooldown on this bad boy (recommended!).

The new best move in the game in PvP, taking the title from the old champion, Shadowfury.

Edit: The rogue DOES get the debuff from his own smoke bomb.

Edit2: Being nerfed in patch 4.0.6. Now will only last 5 seconds instead of 10.

IMO, not a huge nerf. The longest you can really keep anyone inside this thing is 5 seconds if you land a 5-point kidney then on your next GCD use smoke bomb, because like I said, it's only 4 yards at the most that they have to move before they're getting healed again. It would be nice if the duration was 6 seconds so we could get a restealth off with it, but whatver, it's still awesome.

Edit3: I've known this for a while but held off on posting it here because I thought it was unintended. Since it doesn't look like it's getting fixed soon, I might as well share it. Smoke Bomb breaks enemy rogues out of stealth as soon as they enter it, and works pretty much like Flare. This means a few things. For one, when you notice that you're up against another rogue team in arenas, you can open on one of his partners and drop a Smoke Bomb immediately. This way when the enemy rogue comes to open on you, he breaks out of stealth and doesn't get his opener. You can also drop it on a rogue who's about to Vanish. No more Vanish for him.

Anybody knows what would happen, if a shaman made his pack of totems, and you dropped this ontop of them, and continued to him, so they would be inside, while you and the shaman outside?... Would be nice if they had no effect on you for 10seconds.. And same with other "auto spell attacks" like mages new orbs? and mirror images?.. But this is a nice spell, and it sure needs some testing..

I do not know if you've noticed, but "Smoke Bomb" is an ability originally from DotA, "Smoke Screen", like other rogues Cataclysm spells with names and similar utilities such as:

Smoke Bomb = Smoke Screen: Rikimaru - Rogue
Coup de grace: Mortred - Rogue
Vendetta: Anub'arak ~~(I think)~~ - Rogue

I think Blizzard is doing this because DotA2, the game that the icefrog is doing with the "Valve", and this enraged the guys in the Blizzard, and as DotA (WC3) was done in one of the editors of Warcraft III , "Blizzard" will not have problems with copyright if ever put these skills in WoW, but the valve will have problems with copyright when putting the skills that are using coming WoW DotA (WC3).

So ... what I mean is that if the DotA2 put the abilities that WoW is putting them in WoW classes, "Valve" may have problems with copyright, it's all a strategy of "Blizzard".

I'm not trying to support anyone ... I'm just inform them and make some comparisons of what is happening.....

One of my favourite uses for this is in Alterac Valley. When the opposing faction starts attacking your general, cheap shot the tank and drop a smoke bomb on them. They won't dodge/parry attacks for a few seconds and they won't receive heals. It's often enough to cause a wipe.

After patch 4.0.6 it lasts for 5 seconds down from 8 seconds. At PvP 5 seconds are not enough to let you the chance to restealth (the time to get out of combat is 6 seconds). So the next time you want to use it to get restealth use Gouge first and after 2-3 seconds use Smoke Bomb.

Cannot target into or out of. An enemy outside cannot target the enemy you have stunlocked inside of it in order to heal.
Vice versa: The healer you have inside the smoke cannot heal one of his/her allies that is outside of the smoke.
If enemy healer and heal target are both inside or outside of the smoke there is no obstacle to casting

Glyph of prep for this spell is part of what is broken about cata pvp. It's just too surefire in so many comps, most classes have 1 way of combatting it and when they prep and you have trink on CD you cannot be peeled or healed and you will die.

I was in arena, and my rogue partner threw down smokebomb. Somehow a disc priest dragged the enemy (who was in the smokebomb) out of it with leap of faith. Should it be like that or is it a bug?

If the radius is 8 yards, "end to end" (diameter) would be 16 yards. Giving it a 25.12 yard circumference.

Circumference of a circle is pi*diameter; NOT pi *radius, thus making it 50.27yds. Assuming the smoke bomb forms a perfect sphere around the Rogue the volume it would take up is 2144.66yds^3.

To save any additional revision you might be doing for your maths exam the area of a circle is pi * (radius ^ 2)...

Sorry to break the ice. But i have recently been using this ability alot but it doesnt seem to do ANYTHING. And the duration is too small tbh. And just one last thing. A healer can focus target the other pal and apperently, that way he can target him. Not fair eh?

You're funny. The word you should have used is accuracy, not precision. If you're going to preach scientific terminology, at least make sure you use the right words. You're like a grammar nazi that starts his post out by saying "your dumb."

But as long as I'm calling you out, we don't really have any way of knowing how many sig figs should be assigned to 8 (and if you assigned it only one sig fig, you have some serious misconceptions about the concept; I'll let your superior education system sort that one out for you). We don't actually know how distance is calculated in WoW, and Blizzard has gone to lengths to make sure of that. Does the number that guy posted have too many decimal places? Probably - almost certainly. Did it warrant an attack like yours? Not really. Good job mixing up basic vocabulary, though.

I was using this today and realized the animation and sound has changed slightly.

Previously when triggered it made an odd belch sound before the smoke appeared. Lame. Now when you use it you get a small explosion at your feet as if you threw down a real smoke bomb before getting the smoke. Unfortunately you don't have a toss animation like with Distract... yet.

A minor cosmetic change it may be, but at least it no longer sounds like my rogue has bowel problems.

It sounds like you're confused or not using this ability properly. Let me break it down a bit.

1. It's an aoe effect that creates a Line of Sight barrier. If someone could still cast provided they were already targeting the person who entered the smoke bomb, this spell might as well not exist. This of it as a wall for any enemy outside of it who is trying to cast a spell directly into the smoke.

2. 5 seconds is more than enough time to kill someone, especially if this is used properly. With Blind, Gouge, Kidney, etc and whatever your partners have, you should be able to get a target to sub 50% before deploying this. Not to mention, you have two if you glyph that way. Most rogues I've seen use a stun in conjunction. Making sure the target does not have a trinket ready is part of setting it up.

Last but not least. Don't get frustrated if you use this defensively and get hit anyway, aoe may still hit you, and obviously anyone inside of it can as well. Also, people can use abilities to jump outside of it, such as Disengage, Heroic Leap, Blink, etc. It's not a be all, end all device, know it's limitations and you'll do well with it.

TL;DR:

This spell effectively breaks line of sight for enemies. They cannot target into the smoke bomb. Some aoe type spells may penetrate, but single target healing is impossible unless both enemies are inside of the smoke. Timing of friendly or enemy entering the smoke doesnt matter. It is a LoS wall for its duration to anything trying to go from the outside in.

i used this spell once on my newly 85 rogue alt doing tol borad dailies. I was being overwhelmed by the mobs (as everyone knows the aggro radius in tol borad is wicked ridiculous). Anyways, my vanish was on cooldown and so was my HP...so i popped this sucker last resort to keep from dying...but wouldnt u know the mob simply swung their weapon, it landed and hit me inside the smoke regardless and killed me. Proven fact it cant be relied on, atleast i wont rely on it again in a live or die situation.
