A "highland" pomegranate...as opposed to the other sort, an "underworld" pomegranate.

In Greek mythology, the beautiful Persephone, daughter of Demeter, goddess of the seasons and the harvest was abducted by Hades, god of the underworld. Both mother and daughter were unhappy about the abduction. Hades tried to console Persephone by offering her a pomegranate, her favorite fruit. Persephone, in her sadness, had little appetite, and ate only six pomegranate seeds. Meanwhile, Demeter's grief caused the weather to turn frigid and inhospitable, and mortal men prayed to the gods to set things right. Zeus, king of the gods, heard their prayers, and arbitrated the matter. Hades protested that he had a right to a wife, and Persephone had partaken of his hospitality by eating six pomegranate seeds (a trifle since a single fist-sized pomegranate has many hundreds of edible seeds). Demeter continued to lament and wept that her daughter might be returned.

Zeus mandated a compromise: half the year, Persephone would remain in the underworld, with her husband Hades; the other half, she would remain above, with her mother Demeter. And so when Persephone is in the underworld, the story goes, her mother's sadness causes autumn and winter, and when she is above the world, her mother's joy causes spring and summer.

And so, this pomegranate was apparently a fine specimen from the time Persephone was above the world.

This reference is likely driven by Ghostcrawler's background in ancient Greek...

I have a feeling Wowhead's data for this item is inaccurate. If you've ever eaten a Pomegranate, you'd know that it's impossible to eat a whole one in less than ten minutes.

When I first saw this I thought "Hey they got lazy and used the same icon picture as Nagrand Cherry, I knew it!" All this time I thought it was a cherry, but after closer inspection of the stem I realized it has always been a pomegranate.

This means only one thing however... if this picture has always been the same then that means Nagrand Cherry's are a mistake! The picture is so subtle that it fooled one of the game designers who was making the icon names based on the pictures, but didn't make the pictures himself, therefor he called it a cherry rather than a pomegranate. The irony.
