The way i see it, it does the following:

there's three mobs. mob A, mob B, and mob C.

you dot up mob A. mob A is about to die, you cast soul swap on mob A and it takes instant damage, similar to shadowburn, and dies.

you can then cast soul swap on mob B (you have the opportunity to cast soul swap for 20 seconds, similar to the nightfall's timer proc) and mob B gets all of the damage over time effects that you put on mob A originally, and were active when you cast soul swap.

it's essentially a dot-transfer spell.

you can then use the same spell and soul-swap mob B with mob C, and chain this as a way to keep your dots constantly active. however, you cannot soul-swap mob A with mob A as a way to cheaply spam instant direct damage. you must change targets.

this is all speculation, but it seems to add up properly.

Also consider the PvP implications. In arenas, one of the tactics is a target switch. So in a 2v2, you dot up player A while player B is CCed. Then you pull your dots off player A, player A gets CCed, and you put your dots on player B. Particularly with a back-loaded-burst class (e.g. a ret paladin, who will need at least 8 sec of combat to stack holy power to use their big burst CD, or a feral druid who will want to get savage roar up and then feral charge for ravage spam), which would allow you to suddenly target switch and lay on a crapton of damage with no warning.

I think this spell will have many uses. Like you said, mob's about to die, this would let you put up your dots without the extra casts. I don't think it would work to "chain" dots, because there is a cooldown involved, which is longer than I believe all of the dots you would apply. However, it would work to pull your dots off a target that will need CC, or as a way to just force a ton of dots on a person for a target switch. There are probably more applications of this, too, but it's a very interesting mechanic.

Personally, I'll be interested in using this for levelling... Assuming the mobs are close enough together that I can chain pull them, it ought to be quite tasty.

hehehe, A lock gets his routine DoTs on a rogue. Just before the rogue dies and he / she soul swaps to rogue's buddy, rogue CoS's... that's a major slap to the face.

the latest beta build seems to have added a 10 second cooldown to soul swap that hasn't been widely reported.

people love the sound of this ability but please bear in mind the actual time saving involved.
the ability allows you to put up three DoTs which would normally take 2.66 GCDs to apply in just 2 GCDs.

it has some definite uses in PvP and soloing but isn't much of a DPS increase for multi-mob pulls with the glyph.

Questions, questions:

Does SSwap transfer the Shadow Bolt 5% crit? Is a CoE aoe re-applied? One would assume the Haunt damage modifier would be transferred, but it never hurts to ask? If the Soul Swapped mob had Soulburn: SoC on it, does it transfer? Any way to get a free refresh on it? What about three stack of Shadow Embrace, does it transfer?

What is the status of timers? For example, if Corruption had one tic left, is the SSwapped Corruption applied with one tic or fresh? What about CD's? If the CD is expired when SSwap-exhale is cast, will the dot fail to cast? (e.g inhale a fresh Haunt and immediately exhale before Haunt's 8-sec CD is refreshed)? Will potion and trinket crit transfer with the SSwap, if they've dropped off at the time of exhale?

Previous writer listed three dot's (BoA, Corruption, UA) at 2.6 GCD's, but CoE, Haunt and the three stack of SE add 3+ more.

Will inhale and exhale be separate spells? Or once inhaled, SSwap must be exhaled next? Glyphed, when does the 10 sec CD kick in? Upon inhale or exhale?

If you are in a situation where you can die too damn quick to make it useful (read: battlegrounds), then I wouldn't spec it. PVE could be really useful if you drop a full DOT stack on an add and pull it off just before it dies and put it on another add, especially if you have the glyph (which at this time leaves the old dots on the old target but adds a 10 second CD). But even then it might just be more worth it to cast a soulburned Seed of Corruption (by the way, I hope they don't remove this mechanic- it is awesome on PTR) on any group of adds and just watch everyone explode.

So basically this is only useful in 2v2 PVP situations where you are trying to CC one opponent and move his dots to the other opponent and alternate (and that's only if you don't glyph it).

This along with a rogue's redirect will allow your 2's or 3's team to have a very strong switch

Requires a good connection and excellent timing to "pull" the 3 dots off a player/mob before he dies and you lose them,and once you recover them,you need to tag another person/mob fast or you lose them.Lag spikes can sometimes ruin the attempt for you.Also,both the initial dot "removal" and the "switch/copy" do not require you to be facing the target (as is the mechanic of most instant cast dots in the game),allowing one to swap on the run.

Try this for fun: hotkey the spell,use your 3 main transferrable dots on the first target,and when facing a large mob pack,alternate between that hotkey and Tab-switching the targets,as fast as the global cooldown allows it.The end result?

An infernal game of voodoo STD ping-pong of Doom.Sure,doesn`t actually do anything useful,but maaan,does it look satisfying...

The whole power of the affliction is based on the dots, and the ability to damage multiple targets at the same time, without to be necesserily focused on them, when the damage is taking place.

No dots on the target, no damage on the target. All dots, exept UA are instant cast, so its not always wise to remove the dots from a target, in order to damage another, just because Soul Swap saves you the unstable affliction cast, and the global cooldown of the other dots that you can cast while moving.

Its not that its a bad spell, but without the glyph it can be usufull under very special circumstances, that doesnt really happen that often.

You can cast this 360 degrees (All the way around you).

Also, each DoT you soul swap, acts as a seperate cast - so 1 or more might MISS if youre not hit-capped!

Spell reflect this and you'll be laughing for a while as you see all these dots load up on your opponent lock.

Just noticed this today. with the glyph if you use Souldswap then remove the buff you gain you can re use the ability instantly. So on single target you can keep hitting with this ability
