My guess is that flametounge is for the elemental shammy being oom or having to many mobs interupting spells.

Does this proc clearcasting?

If not, I hope that, in next patch, where shaman clearcasting procs with ALL crits (meaning a higher proc rate for caster shammys), flametongue's crits also proc clearcasting.

And this gets +damage from spell damage, so it's the choice for elemental shaman.

A fun way to use flametongue is with this build.

Basically, you would want to wear elemental gear for +dmg. Get 2 very fast weapons (Pref caster daggers with low melee dmg and high +spell dmg) and enchant them both with flametongue.

With this build and gear, you'll be doing some very nice fire damage (or frost if you want frostbrand). Best thing is that crits with flametongue will be boosted by the elemental fury talent.
Melee crits will proc flurry for faster fire damage. Shock crits will proc elemental devastation which in turn will boost melee crit for some more flurry goodness, Oddly enough, this is the only use I've seen for this talent. Toss down a searing totem. I swear you will see numbers streaming up on your screen.

Of course I wouldn't pvp with this. But PVE grinding is great.

Another note is that you would want to avoid melee stats. That's why I havent taken any talents that would boost melee damage except for critical damage to proc flurry.

After the WF fix in 2.0.10, Flamtongue on the Off Hand would give the highest dps(Ofcourse WF on the main hand).
For pvp though, the Frostbrand slowing proc is really really sweet, but I'd still recommend 2handers for big chunks of damage.

The bonus damage from Flametongue is calculated before Attack speed modifiers. For example, proccing flurry will not decrease it.

Smacking this on a Flurry Axe makes for some groovy damage-output. Add a Fiery enchant and watch the mobs go up in flames.

The damage from flametongue is not diminished when put on the OH (unlike rockbiter and WF) and only depends on the base weapon speed. Not to mention it also ignores armor and the extra damage is capable of spell knockback as well.

Two slow weapons with double WF still yields the highest DPS, but in the case that you are sporting a fast off-hand, flametongue is the way to go.

Flametongue Weapon add 10% of your +spell damage to the fire damage it does.

To know the damage it add to your weapon = "(35 * weapon speed + spell damage/10) * 1.15" (if you have elemental weapons talent)

ive heard it gains 10% from spelldmg but how does that work?

lets see we have 100 spelldmg, wil every hit i do give 10 extra dmg regardless of weaponspeed, making this good for fast weapons, or will it be adapted to weaponspeed

As of the latest PTR build, Flametongue now grants an MS-type debuff to the target.

Shaman
- Flametongue weapon puts an "MS" (50% healing reduction) on your current target. 5 Second duration, refreshes every hit.

The healing debuff has been removed again in a more recent build of the PTR.

A great update to this imbue in WOTLK, now shaman can actually use it.

Restoration Shaman, a good bost to solo farming, and if lacking spell power early on can help a little. However https://www.wowhead.com/cata/spell=51994 will be the imbue of choice for restoration.

Elemental Shamans, this will obviously be the imbue of choice. Include this glyph: https://www.wowhead.com/cata/item=41532 and you have an awesome boost in dps. Sadly, the spell power will probably not scale well (the glyph will still help)

Enhancement Shamans, most likely will replace the strong WF/WF combo further up in progression. With the arsenal of enhancement shaman tools increasing to include spells a spell damage imbue will most likely replace the WF off hand imbue. additionaly, the FT proc will also benefit from the increased spell power an enhancement shaman now has from his agil,ap,int, not to mention the merge of crit/hit ratings.

Lots of theory crafting has gone into comparing WFWF and WFFT. The current conclusion seems that after a threshold of spellpower has been reached WF/FT will outpreform WFWF.

now weapon speed will play a major part as well.... but thats just not relative here except for the fact that a SLOWER weapon will proc a BIGGER ft proc but at a slower pace obviously a FASTER weapon will proc SMALLER ft procs but more often.

how this will affect white damage, stormstrike damage and maelstrom weapon stacks is still to be determined.

An interesting note is that while the base damage this causes on weapon hit is dependent on weapon speed, the amount that it scales (10% of spellpower) does not depend on weapon speed. Thus, flametongue weapon DPS will be higher on a fast weapon than a slow one. While enhancement shaman will still prefer slower weapons for other reasons (lava lash and MW), this effect of flametongue damage does make a fast off hand viable if it an upgrade (with WF/FT).

edit: However, this is currently being changed on the PTR for 3.1 so that slower weapons get more benefit from your spell power than faster ones.

since now every Spell Damage also giving +healing by certain amount ( I forgot the calculation, but roughtly double the Spell Damag)

if so, wouldn't it making FT Weapon better than Earthliving for +healing amount given.

There are now a lot of enh shamans using full melee dps gear, a caster MH and flametongue on it.

Can get up to 4k dps in average raiding gear. not bad imo.

The amount of spell power stays the same. Only the fire damage you deal when you hit something with the weapon is changed.

With the patch, bonus spell damage on your gear will affect flametongue weapon procs more with slow weapons and less with fast weapons, probably in the end, flametongue weapon damage over a long period of time will most likely be identical between say a 1.3 speed dagger to a 2.7 speed mace with identical amounts of crit and spell damage. This will push the flametongue offhand ideal towards a slow weapon since lava lash and stormstrike will hit harder.

This was done to try to keep dual flametongue weapon damage output lower than windfury/flametongue combos. Blizzard seems to want enchance shamans to do WF/FT, but with the patch, we're back to using 2 slow weapons. WF/FT will still probably be the better option than other combos of WF/WF or FT/FT.

If you plan on doing a Hybrid spec - Elemental, and Enhance, yes - these do stack spell power on each weapon. And yes flametongue totem stacks with it as well. So you can dual wield and have spell power chants and flametongue on each weapon. Not sure what will happen after 3.1

Just equipped a 3.5spd axe, and put rank 10 FT on it. FT gave me 274 spell damage; the exact same as my 1.8 spd dagger. So FT does not yield more total spell power for slower weapons. Kinda sucks, cuz then staves would be more attractive than they currently are.

Base damage is:
<Weapon Speed>*6850/100
Where weapon speed is in seconds and cannot be more than 4.0 and less than 1.3.
Note that tooltip does not really match to this math, because it just displays 6850/77 to 6850/25. Obviously 100/1.3 is not exactly 77 so that minor mismatch...

i often melee as a elemental because i drop aoe totems and i realized this adds an extra 2-4 numbers (melee/proc) to any instant cast you use due to world cooldown its not all that much like 150-200 dps single target but hell that's not to bad if you don't have to move at all during the fight. i am not saying do this all the time because some fight you just should not be in melee period just something to think about :D

Have you got an idea of how scary that an enhancement/elemental Dual Wield Shaman Hybrid could get, from the Weapon slot ALONE, above two THOUSAND spellpower?

+Flametongue(improved)
+63 Spellpower
+23 Spellpower (1 Red socket)

=893+63+275+23=1254

Weapon 2

1254+1254=2508 Spellpower from THE WEAPON SLOTS ALONE!

This hypothetical scenario isn't very likely, because you miss Thunderstorm, Shamanism, totem of Wrath and Lava Flows, but it is fascinating to see how incredibly strong we are compared to the good old Burning Crusade times.

Lava lash is going to be doing MASSIVE dmg in conjuction with the
Searing Flames

So thats already 150% weapon dmg then add 5 stacks of searing totem thats 100% bonus fire dmg and the 40% bonus for having flametongue on that weapon, an additional 30% if u talented into it AND another 20% from unleash elements Unleash Flame

So pretty much its:
150% wep dmg + 20% x searing nova stacks (max 5) + 40% flametongue + 30% talent + 20 % from unleash elements.

So assuming your weapon does 1000 base damage and u use the above formula your looking at a hit of 10920 dmg (non crit)

When this element is unleashed, I am showing that Lava Lash does NOT consume its effect. Therefore, Lava Lash is most likely is not benefiting from the Unleash Elements.

Make sure you set Power Auras to Weapon Enchant and use 8024 as the exact spell name, if you want to make a warning for when it wears off.

The comments above indicate that the melee fire damage scales with spell power. Was this taken out with 4.0.1? If it's still the case, then the tooltip above should show expressions instead of constant values for the minimum and maximum extra damage.

Also, does/did the fire damage calculation include Flametongue's own spell-damage bonus?

Im confused, when I am on my shaman I am leveling (68), the flametongue weapon tooltip does not include the spell damage buff. In fact, it is completely melee based. By the looks of it the only good thing about it is if you glyph it for 2% increased crit chance, which a lot of people replace with a different glyph. Am i missing something? i.e. is the spell damage only at end game level?

Deactivate Beginner-Tooltips.

- Flametongue weapon still deals damage on hit. Since 4.0.6. (I think) the damage scales with Attackpower, and not with Spellpower (in Enhancement spec.)
- The bonus spellpower are still applied.

Blizzard trying to prevent using spell power weapons by doing this change.

it's better than RW (for low lvl at least)
maths says:
53AP/14=3.78dps, when FW does about 3.8 per hit with a ~1.00 fist that's ~3.8dps that isn't reduced by armor.
at 56, RW adds ~36dps (reduced by armor) vs about full 29.5dps (some resists so what?)with a 1.00 weapon
RW is only good when u're tanking and want to hold aggro
and also keep in mind that it's dmg is a bit higher (this gets resisted) than that of the holydmg factory pally's SoR (didn't compare it with SoC however it would lose)

If you ask me , for melee shammy windfury is best for all atack speed weapons , faster = more wf's (and non stop flurry), slower = more dmg when wf proc

But... we r talking here about the FW , if u use it - go slow weapons 2.90 - 4.00 , bcz rockbiter will be better on 1.30-2.80 atack speed weap's

btw Bliizard have to think about elemental shammys too - there is no good weapon buff for em , while i was elemental i was using Frostbrand weapon , but it dont help casting at all , since we have frost shock and earthbind totem :-/
plx make mana regen or +dmg/heal spells or whatever u pick from caster things

this or rockbiter hmm says on my spell it does 4.7 to 14.6 fire damage wish isent effected by armor while rockbiter only adds 4 dps so even if you use the fastest weapon it still does 0.7 more dps unless they resist btw i dont know if mobs genenerly have fire ristance not talking about fire elemtals =P but rockbiter, as someone already stated is reduced by armor correct me if im wrong but this IS better then rockbiter

Thats the question. First off damage wise, subtracting all critical's they are the same. Why? because rockbiter adds a solid DPS. Flametongue add's a solid amount based on speed. Now think about it speed*fixeddamage= a DPS rating. I dont care how fast or slow your weapon is if it add's two dps, it's two dps you don't get more or less. They both become more useless with fast and better with slow. So why don't they say same thing as other? Well most have said that already. Rockbiter is to your weapon damage, while Flametongue, is additional fire damage. Both Critical depending on either your melee crit's(rock) OR you spell crit's(flame). So I use flame if my spell crit's are higher? Not neccessarily, if you do your research(wowwiki, has good math for peeps like me) melee crit's are 2 times you normal attack. Spell Crit's are only 1.5 times your spell damage. So technically if your crit's are the same rockbiter is still going to do more over time. You want to have a significantly better spell crit to make a consistant use of Flametongue and call it better, in which case you are probaly elemental and shouldn't use either, you should be using frostbrand as a snare, because you want to immobilize so you can cast. Now for melee spec when should you know when to use the two? To hold agro(since naturally it draws more agro) OR beat on leather and cloth wearer's use Rockbiter, because low armor can't resist physical as much. To tear through high armor or not draw as much agro(PvE) use Flametongue as yellow damage is not negated by armor. I hope this has helped some people understand, I have used my own research and numbers I have found online to come to this conclusion. GL!

This and rockbiter have almost 2 different uses so its not good to compair them. Rockbiter weapon does add dps but when you are fighting against a well armored class, it doesnt help much. On the other hand using flametongue weapon is more effective on armored classes since it doesnt get reduced by armor (its a magic effect). But if you are going against a cloth class, rockbiter is better, as the armor will not reduce the damage much. Using flametongue isnt good on clothies because they probably have some fire resistance and it will be reduced.

For enhance shamans --- use windfury in your mainhand and flametongue in your offhand, with two slow weapons this is the best imo

If you're in a group and you're not the main tank make sure to use this instead of Rockbitter. If the time comes that you need aggro use Earth Shock.
