It's still the beta , so you shouldn't take my post too seriously.

We still don't know how it will increase with mastery (ex. 10 mastery = 1 %?)

but if it scales good , it could be optimal to stack mastery for this bonus and the 3rd special bonus for mastery - combat , which is increased special attack damage.

Possible Slow - Slow weapons in Cataclysm?

EDIT: You are probably right Sanitarium. But who knows how far mastery will scale , we will see.

I would like to agree.. in some way, but I would have to say no. If indeed it does scale properly, 10=1% as you said, or anywhere near that, that's quite a chance to have your offhand having an extra attack. If anything, I would say Blizz was thinking about this while they put Main Gauche in. I mean, if this procs your offhand weapon so many times, that would mean more Potency strikes, which means that you're gaining that much more energy to throw in more Sinisters! That may just be my way of seeing it, but it makes sense to me.

Why this mastery is interesting
See some of the posts above for a better description. This mastery is essentialy elemental overload for rogues. Main Gauche also works well with the combat talent Potency, making a nice synergy between the two in terms of energy restoration.

If this can proc Combat Potency it'll probably be more of an energy booster than a damage booster, in which case you'd still want a quick offhand. Though I suppose it'd be possible to use a slow weapon in the offhand, maybe even with a fast mainhand (backstab spec) to proc it even more, who knows?

Having 31 points in combat, this mastery gives 48,75% chances to get an extra offhand attack. Spending all your talent points in combat at lvl 79, increases the chances to 55%.

At lvl 84 you can get it to 60%

Sounds pretty nice to me :P

At Blizzcon 2010, they announced that the proc chance (they didn't mention scaling) is getting quadrupled. Pretty nice, if you ask me.

As far as I know, Main Gauche only procs off of white attacks, which goes completely against Combat preferring a slow high-damage mainhand. Additionally, the extra offhand attack doesn't proc Combat Potency, making it doubly useless. Not sure whether the extra attack is normalised or not, but in any event you've still got the normal offhand damage penalty to deal with.

Basically, the devs took the old Hack and Slash talent and thought "how can we make this completely and utterly worthless?"

Side note: Main Gauche is French for "left hand", and is a type of dagger carried by a swordfighter in his off-hand for parrying attacks.

ATM in 4.0.3a this mastery at base amount made a little less then 4% of my total dps.

Guess mastery is more of a assassination thing! This does seem a very odd bonus, it certainly doesn't seem to me that it's worth doing anything other than slow mh fast oh for it. The a significant damage bonus will be the application of deadly (and thus instant) poison from the strike rather than the blow itself , so I imagine it's probably making up a bit more of the dps than recount shows. Using a slow off hand would gimp your energy generation and thus mean you make less special attacks (which I assume have a chance of procing this effect) as well as dropping the amount of deadly poison you apply and so I very much doubt it could possibly be worth doing.

Use slow/fast and grumble about it, if you have a !@#$ load of mastery, spec assassination! Some serious + damage from poisons!

This will be buffed in 4.0.6, possibly making it worthwhile for combat rogues.

When this ability procs, it plays the same sound effect as Backstab. The hits also show up as yellow damage.

Now that it triggers MH attacks and procs off MH attacks, the term "Main Gauche" is not at all accurate. The talent is much better though.
