I have broken down all of the current masteries into two categories: unique, interesting masteries and flat bonus masteries.

Why this mastery needs to be more interesting (tldr: it's boring and should be made fun, like Blizzard promised)
Blizzard’s main reasoning behind the recent talent changes was to eliminate the ‘boring’ talents that, for example, only increased damage by x%. The mastery system was supposed to provide each spec with a fun, unique mechanic that would replace some of the boring talents while still providing a damage increase. I feel that Blizzard dropped the ball on this entire system. As you can see, only half of the existing specs got ‘interesting’ mastery mechanisms; the rest still only increase the effectiveness of certain abilities by x%. In the end, all of the masteries provide the exact same amount of increase (in theory), but I think for the amount of money we are all paying them, Blizzard should give all specs interesting mechanisms.

I believe the point with the Mastery system was to give them a way to fine-tune a class and spec. For example, Beast Master Hunters and Arms Warriors fell behind their counterparts during WotLK, and it became difficult for the Devs to correct this so as to keep them roughly equivalent in damage to the other specs for those classes.

By introducing Mastery, it becomes possible to increase (or decrease) a Spec's overall damage (or healing, mitigation, etc., depending on the class/spec) by simply changing the amount of the benefit they receive from their mastery. That way they can, by changing this one number, either buff or nerf a class/spec to keep it in line with others, without having to change specific spells or impact the way the spec plays.

Of course it remains to be seen how sucessful this is, but Mastery should give them the tools to do this without having to mess with the basic mechanics of a class. This is a good thing.

Does this count towards Kill Command? I'm thinking about stacking Mastery since my pet will only benefit so much Attack Power from my gear to a point. I assumed that this increased Beast damage does also count towards Special Attacks, but Kill Command is a Hunter initiated ability.
