This spell is really fun and has great potential.
Working like a Gnomish remote control, this affects humanoids.

When controlling a player you can move it where you like, and make it cast buffs and certain spells. For example, in an instance, you could control a mob, use it spells to heal your party (!!), and attack other enemy mobs.
It can also give armor buffs, intellect buffs, etc. It's best to control mages, and they can also polymorph their allies, DoT them, cast massive damage spells, etc. This could turn the whole outcome of a fight completely upside down!
You can also mind control enemies off the LM in Arathi Basin, which is even more fun.

This is why it's so useful. However, the range is quite short, and the cast time is so long. That's why it's not used that frequently. It's also unpredictable, sometimes lasting 1 second, other times lasting 60. Also, as a priest (in instances), your main job is to heal, and you could wipe a party if you fool around with this spell too much.

The absolute most effective use of this spell is in the Chapel of the Scarlet Monestary, do not leave home without it! Scarlet Wizards have the ability to use Arcane Explosion which can EASILY be used to bring down your entire party as it deals ~150 damage and has a cooldown of ~1 second. Mind controlling these enemies though will allow you take down entire mobs of enemies by spamming the ability and drawing all threat towards them.

One thing I seem to notice about this spell. The higher you are the more effective it seems to work. When I first learned it I tried it against several mobs to see how long it would last, and it seemed to break after 5 or so seconds each time. I've also read that shadow affinity and focus seems to help with the duration but as of the current patch I'm specced 10/41 and it still seems to work the full duration. Also, try to keep your Mind Controlled minion in range, after it gets a certain distance away it seems to automatically break. It also seems as of the latest patch 2.0 (I didn't notice this on the 2.0 public test realms), if you allow your MCed minion to die by enemy hands, you cannot loot it like you would normally be able to.

Because of this range-limiting factor, you won't see this spell being used much in pvp, because it's too difficult to cast.

One very effective use is to solo an instance (a much lower level one, of course) by mind controlling the boss. The boss can easily kill all the mobs around, and because it has lost a significant amount of health from fighting, you can then easily kill it.
This shows another great reason to use this spell. Try it out and see!

This rank of Mind Control allows for possession of a humanoid target up to two levels higher than the priest.

Beyond the initial resist check, MC will "roll" every couple seconds to see if the control breaks. The target's level will play into these periodic resist checks, as will the priest's +spellhit (5/5 Shadow Focus helps a ton) and keeping the target close to the priest.

if you are feeling really evil, you could mc a fellow ally (much lower) and use him to attack someone from the opposing faction in a neutral city like BB or gadgetzan :) of course you should have a backup plan on how to escape the guards after your little buddy gets owned in less then 12 seconds

You can mind control members of the oppisite faction and if they can buff they can buff u or u could buff them which is really fun cause once i came upon a 10 man horde group i got mced and fully buffed which really helped me out :P

if you are a alliance priest with gnomish engineering, and there is a gold beggar near ironforge, tell him that you will give him money if he duels you, do a low rank spell that takes almost all of his hp away, mind control him to a near by fire that does damage, and then use a gnomish net-o-matic (whatever they are called), and watch him burn too death

Notes to Self:

+ Never duel a priest while waiting for a zeppelin. The priest threw me off right as the zeppelin was arriving, hence making me miss it.

+ Also, once long ago; a priest dueled me while waiting for somebody to relog when we were outside of Blackrock Depths in Blackrock Mountains, she dueled me, I accepted. Won first time. Second time around she mind controlled me and threw me into the lava. Long run back. :[.

To you future priests; have fun tormenting people like me. ^_^. We get angry with mind control that fully kills us throws of off cliffs or making us miss things.

This one time in AV, there was an Alliance priest among the Ally offensive, who mind-controlled one of the Horde defenders that kept peeking out and running back in. After MCing him, he ran him into Drek's room. Since he was flagged as "Alliance-friendly" due to being mind controlled, Drek and the warmasters killed one of their own defenders. Pretty interesting tactic.

I have only used mind control once on a friends priest (lvl 42) but i just made one and haven been trying to level it so it's lvl. 16 not bad considering i level slow(un-imaginabally slow) and i was in a guild with 7 DK's but they got all angry because i daid a lot of people who play WOW are like in their mid 30's and kicked me out but anyway.... i heard mind control is hard to do and oyu need to train with it so i was thinking maybe having a high lvl supervise me while i do t so if i get lots of aggro when it breaks (of course) he/or she can handle it good tactic or no?

I feel so stupid
A few days ago in EotS near the mage tower I(ally dk) found a lonely troll priest-a dream come true.I used almost all my CD that interrupted spells or silenced so i couldn't do anything else when he decided to mind control me.The first time it broke after 2 sec because my ghoul stunned the priest(who had like 5% HP left).Then he cast a fast heal and tried again-and he threw me off the cliff!

Buff the opposite faction if you're feeling nice. MC them, then hit PW:F, PW:S, Shadow Protection, basically any instant-cast while you have them targeted. They'll be buffed right before Mind Control is broken.

3.1.0 PTR Patch Notes Update - Mind Control: This spell can no longer be cast while it is already active.

When you Mind Control a mob, he gains a magical debuff called Mind Control and you gain a magical buff called Mind Control.
In TCB i could start Mind Controling a mob even though i was allready Mind Controling one.It just broke the first Mind Control when the second landed on the target (you got 3 sec to cast it free while mobs are fighting your first minion basicly ) then i got all the aggro of the patrol on me but imagine that the new mob you are controling has a frost nova or something similar the patrol wont be able to run to you and you could eventualy grab the aggro back with the new mob.

I noticed while lvling in Woltk that when we Mind Control we get a Mind Control and a Cancel button in our "stance bar" next to shadowform.I presume this is incase your Mind Control spell is on your Action bar and that you would like to recast it on another mob but as you get the mobs abilitys on your action bar it clears your original Action bar and you only have attack on 1 and the rest is mob abilitys depending on the mob.
I thought "great" its probably so we take advantage of that,but each time i try to Mind Control a second mob while i am allready controling one ,i get 0 minions (first brakes and second doesnt get Mind Controled) and i still get the magical buff on me,only way to be able to Mind Control something again is to remove theMind Control buff on you.
At this time this is what happens when you try controling 1 mob while it is allready active:
I start casting mind Control on Gordunni Elementalist:
Pwnrer begins to cast Mind Control.
Pwnrer gains Pwnrer's Mind Control.
Gordunni Elementalist is afflicted by Pwnrer's mind Control.

At this point the mob is friendly and i target Gordunni Back-Breaker and start casting Mind Control on him:
Pwnrer begins casting Mind Control.
Mind Control is refreshed on Pwnrer.
Pwnrer's Mind Control dissipates from Gordunni Elementalist.
Gordunni Back-Breaker is afflicted by Pwnrer's Mind Control.

I was once (long pre-TBC) on my way, a bit later than the rest of the party, to a run of BRD on my 60 priest. On the chain bridge I a Horde party saw me, and a Tauren warrior charged at me, swinging his huge epic Warlord axe at the poor priest in greens. I quickly feared him, cast MC, and jumped him off the chain and released immediately. I would've paid more than a penny for his thoughts.

this ability look AMAZING for pvp simply mindcontrol the alli/Hord and make them jump off a cliff and 3 sec cast time isnt bad the mages pyroblast is 3 sec. this also looks very fun for ganking and solo questing just wish they would make a rank that would allow me to mindconrol 80s (when i hit 80 i just made a priest alt and am reserching it now) so when in storm peaks that that one annoying alli DK comes up i can mindcontrol himm off the cliff i was questing on :D or just in normal questing like in Araithy highlands...but i love this spell and cant wait to use it.

Just got this idea from another page here; if you want to be a real jerk to opposing faction lowbies on a PvE realm, take your priest (and even better, a few other buffing classes), and go visit a the opposing starting towns and MC and buff up random mobs (especially any named quest mobs) and watch the lowbies get their butts handed to them.
Of course, I would never do this myself .....

I think there is a bug with this spell, after casting it, theres 2 ways to reset the mob:

1. cast it then let them go without them moving around to far where you MCed where they are

2. cast it multiple times on the mobs (cast it on them twice they'll reset)

the worst experience and my first experience with this spell was in a battle ground (EOTS) i ran up to the priest it was a really good one to survived ~5mins before he ran away he was in one of the ally spots he used there spell that makes em invincible he ran to the bridge he was close enough to the edge that i used typhoon
but he wasnt close enough so as he was ^&*!ed he used this to run me off the edge of the bridge but if your reading this hi and you didnt accomplish giving me duribilty damage because i had equitment manager and i used it to take off all my armor and replace it with the lunar festival armor so i had no duribility damage but i will nevr make a priest mad agin

Yet another great strategy with Mind Control (the most awsome spell a player can have).Once i was dueling a pally in Gadgezan and she beat me 10 times in a row when i randomly looked at a spell in my spell bar and i saw MC,i sad to myself"How could i forget you?"and i clicked my reputation bar and set "At War with Gadgezan" then i Mind Controlled the annoying paladin,attacked a nerby guard and i killed her MUHAHAHA

Leap of Faith (level 85): Pull a party or raid member to your location. Leap of Faith (or "Life Grip") is intended to give priests a tool to help rescue fellow players who have pulled aggro, are being focused on in PvP, or just can't seem to get out of the fire in time. Instant. 30-yard range. 45-second cooldown.

My friend and I (70+) were sitting in the arena seats around Gurubashi Arena when a lv 44 hordy came and sat next to us. We wanted to kill him so badly but he wouldn't move. I decided to get sneaky and dueled him, mind controlled him right into the arena where my friend one shotted him hehehe...

More fun with Mind Control:

For solo use, spam Mind soothe to get as close as you can to your target before dominating them. Stay within 20 yards to keep them in your grip

For Group use, put SW:P or another DoT on all mobs in the pack. MC your target, and whenever your slave kills a mob with one of your DoTs on it, You will gain the Spirit Tap Buff. Works fantastic with when you've Glyphed SW:P, so you gain lots of mana while just standing & channeling.

Is it possible to go into a starting area of the opposite faction, mind control a guard and then kill low level characters? I like to go into starting areas and kill any one I can find that has PvP on (I'm on a normal realm) and kill them. If I could use guards to kill any lowbie no matter if they PvP on that would be fun :). (I do not have a high level priest so I can't check myself, but if I ever got my priest a high enough level to MC the guards I would.)

I've found that Mind Control has a lot more genuinely useful wide-ranging applications than what I've seen in Guides and on these comments, especially for PvP.

The situational application I've seen includes:

Forcing players to jump off cliffs (unusable on Mobs)
Controlling healer mobs to heal your party.
Preventing dangerous mobs using a spell in dungeons.
Applying dots then mind-controlling the mob until it dies.

But I've found a few uses in PvP that I think you'd all be very interested in:

Mind-controlling a player will force them to use their trinket (or suffer the duration of damage from your dots), giving you unpreventable access to Psychic Scream and Horror.
Healers in Battlegrounds can be taken out of the fight via Mind Control and in the situation they trinket out, you can again hold them down longer with Psychic Scream and Horror.
Tricky 1v1 fights with self-healing classes such as Paladins can be shortened quickly via Mind-Control, it's a far more effective form of CC...
... or in Arena situations, you can allow your partner to take out the other team's partner without interruption.
Despite the moderate casting time, you can open with Mind-Control in the same way a Mage would open with Polymorph, giving you the advantage of choosing when the fight starts (or even wasting their trinket).

Druids of course are an exception to these, since they can change forms and no longer be classed as "humanoid". (if they're smart at least, so don't ignore Mind-Control simply because they're Druids)

I'm still looking for more uses for Mind Control and I urge all Priests not to overlook it simply because it has no direct damaging effects or it's 3 second casting time.

Greatest use of MC. Play some defense during Alterac Valley (inside Galv's or Van's chambers). When some fool pops his head in, quick psychic horror, then MC him into the room. Funniest thing is Galv won't attack until MC wears off. Which of course, as soon as it does wear off, BAM! One shot. Freakin' hilarious.
Alternatively on offense, if you can MC anyone playing defense inside Galv or Van's chamber, they'll get one shot as soon as MC hits. But beware, this pulls them!

Experimenting a bit in heroics, I found that a priest can Mind Control a mob or enemy player and then, targetting his or her Mind Controlled minion, Leap of Faith it, acting as a rudimentary Death Grip without the taunt component. While I haven't used this technique in PvP yet, it's extremely helpful for moving pesky casters to your tank in heroic groups (and it's also just really awesome).

Personally my favorite form of CC in heroics, as it can used to both kill off or greatly weaken an NPC in a pull, and deal a potentially huge amount of damage to the others before it expires.

this spell is FABULOUS in Heroic content with humanoid mobs. I was shooting arrows for 50k! Easily top the dps meters with this and still be close to full mana. Just be mindful when it's about to break because the mob you MC will come straight for you like a bear to honey :P

Mind Control is a beautiful spell when Cataclysm hit. the constant healing mobs in the instances proved to be useful and saved me mana in a long run. Vortex Pinnacle is one great example for it's adepts and it's 100k Heal. A tank can be put to full health immediately and you get the benefit of this with mana conservation.

just a warning which may have been posted several times before...after MC ends you will have HUGE aggro on the mc´d target and they will be "inmune" to fade for let´s say...5 secs. so be prepared and have tank taunt it quickly

Just a few tips not already mentioned here:

When MCing targets to their deaths, you can break the channel once they are over the edge, although be careful not to break it too soon. This saves precious seconds spent waiting for the spell to finish, although the spell will cancel itself if the target falls far enough.
Another use for MC in battlegrounds is to cause enemies to lose the advantage of the higher ground. For example, in Warsong Gulch and Twin Peaks, enemy casters (or even flag carriers) often stand on the higher levels inside the bases, out of reach of the players below, while raining damage down upon them. If timed correctly, priests can MC these targets down to their teammates waiting below.
Conversely, when fighting on raised areas (such as the bases' roofs in Warsong Gulch) MC can be used to temporarily remove enemies from play by forcing them to jump down, out of range of combat. Although they will probably return shortly, it can give you the break you need to win the battle.
In battlegrounds involving flag carrying, MC can be used to control enemy flag carriers, slowing their progress across the field or even forcing them to run in the opposite direction. This is a great way for a lone priest to slow indestructible flag carriers until support arrives, or to give their team a few more seconds to grab the opposing team's flag.
MC is subject to diminishing returns in PvP. However, it has no shared DR category, making it far more useful as an extra form of crowd control.
MC can be used for a number of purposes, the most basic of which being simply to prevent the target from taking action. When this is the intention, the desire is mainly to ensure that the MC lasts for as long as possible. By keeping the target close by, the priest has the greatest chance of maintaining the channel, but if, in the latter half of the channel, the priest runs the target as far away as possible from their intended action, by the time the MC breaks, the target should be too far away to be of effect without a short run. This gives the priest time to re-cast MC and re-CC the target before it gets in range. When used in this way, MC can be used to keep a player out of action for more than 20 seconds at a time. The downside is that the priest will be out of action for this time as well.
MC can be very useful for CCing healers, especially at critical moments. Although the priest is unable to act, preventing the target from healing their allies for up to 8 seconds is often enough to down a player.
Always be aware that when MCing a target that is currently under attack, the other players on your side will be unable to harm the target once it becomes MCed. Timed incorrectly, this can waste cooldowns or even prevent your allies from defeating the target. Other players also have no way of knowing when the MC will end, often leaving them surprised when the target becomes hostile once again.
Enemy players can harm MCed targets. Since damage to the MCed target does not reduce the duration of MC, it is generally desirable for as much damage to be caused to the target as possible. AoE will usually be the main source of this.
MCed targets can be made to attack enemy targets. Although this is limited to simple melee auto-attacks, and attack speed is reduced by 25%, this can still be useful to contribute a little dps while MCing the target, and always has the potential of causing confused enemies to focus their attacks upon the target! Alternatively, use the target to destroy totems.
Enemy players can dispel buffs from MCed targets, such as via Mass Dispel.
Enemy players can place debuffs and DoTs on the MCed target, and any such debuffs will remain (and continue to deal damage) after MC has finished.
Friendly players can buff MCed targets. Since most buffs are now raid-wide, it is easy to accidentally lend buffs to MCed targets. These buffs will remain active on the target after MC has finished. On the bright side, these can usually be easily dispelled once MC has ended.
Friendly players can dispel debuffs from MCed targets - it is easy when dispelling buffs from a suddenly MCed target to instead begin dispelling its debuffs! Casting Mass Dispel will simply remove a debuff from an MCed target, instead of removing a buff.
MCing a target does not interrupt its cooldowns; enemies with powerful (non-dispellable) buffs can therefore be MCed until the buff expires. Conversely, while MCed the target's cooldowns will be refreshing, allowing them to return to the fight deadlier than ever.
MC can be useful in PvP for disorienting players. Especially for players using their keyboards to turn, it can take a few moments to re-orient themselves and return to the matter at hand. Running players behind pillars or obstacles can also help to slow their return to combat.
MC does have some value in intense PvP as a form of frustration. By interrupting a player's flow and disrupting their plans, their organisation and focus can be diminished. In organised PvP, not only their cooldowns but also the cooldowns of their teammates may be wasted in this way, and the disruption to their plans and their timing can be critical.
It is wise to shield yourself with PW:S before casting MC. While various forms of CC can still interrupt the channel, pre-shielding reduces the likelihood of pushback, and if you do come under attack while MCing, increases your chances of survival.
Always keep an eye on your own health while MCing. Especially when the target you're MCing is distant from your character, there are few warnings that you have come under attack. Sudden reductions in the duration of the channel are due to incoming damage, and serve as a reminder to reassess the wisdom of continuing to MC.
One of the chief difficulties in MCing a target is the long cast time of this ability. Borrowed Time can be very useful for this, and it is often wise to use PW:S beforehand anyway. Psychic Scream (and Psychic Horror) can also be useful for this purpose. Be aware that if you MC the target while it is still feared, you will be unable to act until the fear expires. However, since many players will trinket out of fears, it can be wise to immediately follow Psychic Scream with a MC cast; if the target trinkets out of the fear, you can then immediately MC them, and they will have wasted their trinket. If they do not trinket, you can break the cast and either use the time to apply DoTs, dispel buffs, etc, or simply wait until the effect is around 2.5 seconds from expiring before beginning to cast MC again.
MC can be useful for the sole purpose of forcing your target to use their trinket. Since MC is not an ideal form of crowd control (as it requires you to take no action for the duration) it can be useful to have your opponent waste their trinket escaping MC; following this with Psychic Scream should provide several seconds of unescapable CC.
If you do MC a feared target, you may prefer to break the MC early; since the target is already CCed, only your time is being wasted. However, this will still waste the diminishing return, and you may prefer to simply wait for the effect to expire (depending on its duration). Always check your target's debuffs before completing the cast; MCing snared and rooted targets can be

One more tip: when a priest MCs one of your teammates and tries to run them off of a cliff, don't forget that as a temporary enemy, you can use roots, snares, stuns and even fears on your teammate to prevent this from happening. The priest will either break the channel, or better still stand there wasting their time while their target is CCed.

Of course if you have stuns, interrupts, etc, and can find the priest, it's better to simply CC him; but when you suddenly notice an ally about to leap off the cliffs, there's often no time for this, and a quick stun or root can save you from losing a man, and perhaps losing the battle ;)

I would highly recommend any mages encountering priests MCing their teammates in arena (or anywhere else) to take the advantage of this by casting Polymorph on their pals. Not only will it waste the effect (preventing the priest from running or attacking with the target) but might just regenerate half of your teammate's health, maybe even winning the match ;)

One feature of this spell has to do with faction; I use it frequently in AV when horde are waiting in Drek's room. MC will make Drek turn hostile and attack the MC'd player, also, agro does not transfer to me.

I just had a Horde player sneak up on me while I was working my way through some ogres, one-by-one. He cast mind control and ran me past every remaining one. The monsters did the dirty work, he cast the final blow, then slipped away without a scratch.

The real use for this move is in scholo. My dad goes through guild runs rapidly to get his BS hat and the priest mind controls the summoner and makes the others kill it. that way it cannot summon any of those anoying skeleton dudes.

I just got this skill and tested it in many ways, as it's basically the most interesting thing a priest gets.

1. When you MC a mob there are two ranges. The range the mob moves from you, and the range in which the mob moves from where it was initially MCed. I've tested this extensively. If the mob moves out of either, you lose control of it. The range is 30 yards from either target (you or the MCed unit).
For example: If you mind control a unit that is 20 yards from you and run it toward your player, and past it another 15 yards in the same direction, you will lose the MC.
If you mind control the same unit and run it 15 yards in the opposite direction, when you are 20 yards away, you will lose the MC. The ranges seem very strict.
2. When using mobskills on enemies, both the player and the mob need to be within range of the enemy as per the skill's range. This is evidenced by the message "Your pet is out of range" that I recieved when trying to use the MCed mob's skills on enemies well within its range, but not within mine.
3. Do not use this skill in PvP against Paladins or Hunters. Paladins can shield and knock themselves out of it, hunters can feign death and do the same. So don't use it unless you're positive they suck balls at PvP (which I guess isn't really that much of a rarity for paladins. noobclasskthx.)

This spell is sickly awesome, if used on the right mobs in the right instances.

MC anything with a Heal spell and chaincast it on your tank. This provides several bonuses; 1. Mana-free (well, MC's not free, but fairly cheap) healing, threat-free healing, and it prevents the healer from healing the other mobs you're fighting.

MC the casters at the very end of SM-Cath and spam Arcane Explosion for some insane DPS, and quite a few giggles. Don't ever MC the Myrmidons - they dual-wield and will probably kill you when the timer is up.

If you're the only priest, resist the urge to MC adds that can't heal - sooner or later your party's going to need healed, and the MC'd mob will HATE you if you're forced to release control to do so; it's a great way to die.

If you can coordinate with your party well enough, this is a fantastic spell to thin down those awful 5+ pulls - have Frost Nova cast and get your tank in there to do some AoE shouts, sheep one, and you're magically down to 3.

Mind Soothe is indispensable.

Another vote for the "this is awesome CC for instances" crowd.

Let's say you've got an unavoidable 5-pull coming up. Most groups would sheep 1, fight 4 at once.

Better plan if you can pull it off ... priest creeps up slowly on group. MC the nearest, as long as the priest is out of range the other 4 will beat it to death quickly. They'll now rush the priest but don't have much hate, easy to tank them off the priest quick. Now sheep one, MC another you're down to 2. Mop them up, realease MC, kill it quick, kill sheep.

MC is also *very* useful for soloing instances, since you'll generally be fighting mobs lower than your level = less chance to resist. My usual tactic: Shield up then Holy fire; Pain; MC all on the same mob. Use this mob to tank the others off you while shield holds. If all goes according to plan, you'll have one dead mob, one injured mob and you've used hardly any mana.

Heres an idea for you guys if you are bored out of your mind and want to have fun messing with newbies. I am a 49 Dwarf Priest on Thunderlord, and I went to elwynn forest last night. I decided to lure a murloc to goldshire. luckily with vampiric embrace, it doesnt cause any actual damage in itself, so I can keep it from losing aggro by luring it a little ways then waiting for vamp to cool down then stick it on him again, walk a little further, repeat. this way took a while but I eventually got him in front of the goldshire inn. it was then that I mind controlled him and chased low levels and freaked them out. of course chased them within the range. a level 6 pally started buffing himself, then I ran him through the door to the inn without losing sight of him, and a warlock started running away. it was pretty funny. tonight I think I will try to take a murloc to stormwind, if I can keep people from attacking it. I know you can buff opposing faction members with MC as ive done it before, but I wonder if I could give a murloc my shield. Its for party members only, but I wonder if a "minion" would fall under that class. guess i'll find out.

I tried it last night, but I forgot about the guards, so that didnt work BUT it will let you put your shield on your minion. so I just chased low levels in front of stormwind instead. If someone else hits your target before your get your MC cast off it will say "target is tapped". Apparently if someone not in your party attacks a mob it can not be MC'd. This got annoying last night as I would have my murloc almost to stormwind and I would be casting my MC and some low level would run up and attack it before my cast finished.

I had my fun last night with MC. A level 70 horde was ganking and camping 3 of our guild's alts which are around mid 30 level in STV. So we got on our mains, and camped him, and naturally 2 of his guildlings showed up and we eventually put together a raid group and ran them off, then raided grom gul, then we body jumped into the lower deck of the blimp. Took a couple round trips to UC and back. but at one point a level 57 horde mage got on the blimp as it docked at UC. as it pulled away we all went upstairs and he was red so I Mind Controlled him and made him jump off. There was so much laughter being heard over ventrilo.

I just want to add that if you want to take on 2 enemies (pve) by mind controlling and making them fight each other, they only become flagged by you if you personally do damage to them, so if one of them kills the other or someone attacks them you dont get the kill. (so dont use mind control if there are others nearby questing, maybe it's just me but people tend to steal my mind-controlled mobs)

Ahh MC. By far the most saddistic move in the game when used correctly. I've thrown a few hordees off outlands with MC. The best places I've found to do so are Warmaul Hill (Nagrand)and Angor'osh (Zangarmarsh) since its highly quested at by lower lvls (hordes can do so as well).Ive also thrown a few off the entrance to BRD and the cliffs at Arathi Basin or the bridge at Dun Baldar in AV. I Like the previous answer and to add on to that while you're in Booty Bay, stay at a distance and wait for a low lvl to get on the ship to Ratchet. Jump on the ship one second before it leaves and MC them off right before it goes into the cutscene with the map.

It really is a shame that Blizz decreased the time I can MC with the new patch. I've found that its now (tragically)impossible to drown other factions in water (as previously mentioned) as there isnt enough time. I also can't cause hunters to kill their pets anymore with this update. So sad. Well this is just a small list of the wonders either faction can do with MC. <(*.*<) (^*.*^) (>*,*)>

Let me tell you my story,
i was lvl 18 happy little druid that time, jumping every few yards and /danceing with my quite new bearform :)

One day, i went to the zepline from unndercity to orgrimmar
and a level 39 rude priest offered me a duel!
"For fun ^_-" he sayed... the little bastard!

Anyway, although iv already had 2 70s i couldnt think someone can be that maniak, so i accepted the duel(the zep was still hanging there on the board).

3..2..1 the duel started, as soon as that heppened i rooted the priest, then he resisted my moonfire and i went to bear from. he started to DoT me and i reshapenshifted and started to heal, then the bastard mind controled me woooosh off the zep

I started to fall and spin in the air like a tornado, then 5 sec later iv founded myself flying high above orgrimmar and started to fly south to....the big sea!

I whsipered a friend to get a lock and summon me before ill be doomed! he saved me at the 90th min(costed 6g)

so from this story kids we learn one thing...
actully two:
1. never duel someone in a moving platform(zep,elevator etc..)
2. if for some reason you did and the maniak planing to screw you type /concede asap to cancel the duel and even make a macro

Scarlet Wizards in SM Cathedral
These things have about 6k mana, and cast the following spells:

Arcane Explosion:
250 mana
instant cast
Causes about 130 arcane damage to nearby enemies.

Fire Shield III:
about 100 mana
2 second cast
causes about 34 fire damage to nearby enemies every 3 seconds for 30 seconds.

This is what mind control was intended for:

Mind control one of these in the SM cathedral, cast fire shield. You will most likely have about 4-8 mobs on you. Get a pally to drop consecration, and then spam arcane explosion, either until they all die or your pet runsout of mana (it happens). With the pally healing the scarlet wizard, its easy. Got to be the funniest thing to do. At the end of mind control, just cast fire shield on the pally, have them righteous defence you when it breaks, and then kill it.

CAUTION: if the wizard resists, or dies too early, YOU WILL WIPE THE GROUP. 8 mobs, on about 3/4 health, will go straight for the priest. The only thing that can save you is frostnova or blessing of protection. Righteous Defence will only take 3. If this happens, abandon the priest and run out the instance.

- Darktidings, lvl 39 undead shadow priest, Ragnaros.

I believe the tooltip given on Thottbot is no longer correct for this rank of the spell. I am currently level 36 with rank 1 Mind Control, and mine displays that it can affect targets up to level 37 - I have confirmed this in-game tooltip to be correct by successfully using Mind Control on a level 37 Scarlet Protector. A change as of the last patch, perhaps?

I'm sure that someone has already done this, but by far the most cruel use of this ability is in outside Blackrock depths.

The other day i was at the meeting stone waiting for a shaman in my group to get there so we could start summoning. An alliance priest was following behind him. Most of the time I don't start fights, but I was feeling evil so I decided to mind control the guy and make him jump down into the lava. Not only is it a long way to your corpse from BRD, but since he died in the lava, there is no good place to rez, so you are either going to corpse hop and waste a ton of time or take a heavy durability loss and rez and the spirit healer.

So we start summoning, but people are not responding and going afk so we end up spending a good deal of time at the stone. Eventually the priest I MC'd came back with another priest and tried to throw two of my buddies into the lava. They got one, but through using some clever tactics I was able to MC both priests and throw them down into the lava. The guy in my group they thew into the lava was unable to rez so he had go to a spirit healer.

Eventually our group is all summoned and ready to go. We all get to BRD and change our minds and decide to do LBRS instead. So we again pass the meeting stone. Again we find the priest, and again i throw him into the lava. But this time he had a 61 warrior with him. The warrior nearly kills us all, but our shaman manages to get him.

After we rez, they started bringing in 70s to help them out.
MC FTW but INDECISIVE GROUP FTL.

Mind Control can be a great ability if used properly for PvE.

When to use MC:
The more enemies your group is pulling, and the less cc you have available the more useful it will be for you to MC. You can also use MC when your mana is running low, if you have meditation and spirit tap you can actually regenerate mana by using MC while adding some dps to the group as well as crowd control.

Who to use MC on:
Some enemies make better puppets than others. Who you pick depends greatly on the situation and your personal preferences. Simply look at the enemies as they attack, notice if they have any special abilities and choose what you think is best.

The puppets you control have a wide range of abilities- they can have dots, damage abilities, they can heal, perform AOE spells, provide buffs, debuffs, some even have crowd control abilities. However, do not use summoning spells that create minions for the puppet. The minions summoned will be hostile towards you and your group.

Ranged attackers are more useful in some ways because you can attack fleeing enemies without having to chase them, which could cause your mc to break.

You should choose targets that have crowd control abilities first in any situation. If you do not control the enemy with the crowd control ability, there is the chance that you will get crowd controlled during the pull and loose control of your puppet prematurely.

One more thing that you should consider is that as soon as your MC's durration stops your puppet will be attacking you. You need to be extra careful when using MC on a target that deals large amounts of damage, even with the entire groups dps focused on your target it may not die fast enough to keep you from getting killed.

How and when to use MC:
If you are using MC, do not cast any other spells or abilities. If you somehow get aggro from that ability, you will most likely loose your puppet. When you MC, you not only want to do damage with your puppet, you want other enemies to be attacking your puppet if possible. That way you are doing really doing the damage of both your puppet and the enemies attacking your puppet as well as ccing more enemies. As I implied earlier, kills you get with your puppet can proc spirit tap so it can be a great way of getting mana back.

You can choose to cast MC at two points

1. to pull groups: If you want to pull using mind control, first cast mind soothe, cast MC and then move your puppet close to you. If you keep your puppet well within the maximum casting range, you should have control of your puppet the full duration of the spell. Pulling with MC can be useful because all the other enemies in the groups dps will be on your puppet until they are pulled off. However it can be risky: if your MC is resisted or something bad happens, there is a good chance that you will get a bunch of threat and multiple enemies attacking you.

Also, do not use this tactic if there are other close by groups. You could aggro two groups, your puppet will probably die almost instantly and then every single one of them will be attacking you.

2. to CC: if you simply want to add some cc to take strain off your tank and healer, wait for the tank to pull then cast MC when you are close to your target. Target enemies that are not being taunted by the tank, such as casters and other ranged attackers, before targeting melee attackers. Make sure you are close to your puppet at all times or there is the chance that the MC could break.

***MC is especially helpful when your group accidently pulls an extra group. Simply MC one of the guys who was pulled and attack as many enemies as you can, doing so may prevent your group from wiping.

Breaking MC:
After everything else in the pull had died, move your puppet close to your tank and melee dpsers. Click on the MC buff to remove it. As soon as your puppet is free, it will try to attack you so fade and bubble. Do not dps the puppet unless it is low on health or your tank has control of it.

Other tips:
- Try to keep yourself out of harms way as you MC. Damage can potentially break your MC, watch out for AOE damage.
- Your puppet will gain buffs and auras that your friends cast. If you have a much of melee buffs in your group, MC a melee attacker.
- IF your puppet dies while it is MC'd from another enemy, you will gain no experience from its death and you will not be able to loot it. If your puppet is close to death, break mind control and quickly kill it.
- Dots that are on your target before you MC will continue to damage your puppet.
- Talents such as spirit tap, shadow focus, shadow affinity, shadow reach, focused mind and meditation will all help you MC more effectively.
- If you have a dps meter, make sure it includes puppets under MC. Even then, the damage done while MC will be underestimated because it should also include the damage done to your puppet by other enemies.
- If your gear is a bit subpar for your dungeon, you can do decent dps while performing cc if you MC the entire time. Also if someone complains about your dps, you can tell them you were cc'ing, so they cant really complain!
- You can toss MC'd mobs off of cliffs and into lava. They will not take damage or die, but they will be stuck for awhile before they magically reapear up where they were before. If you throw an enemy down on to another part of the dungeon, chances are it will wind through the dungeon until it finds you, and it will aggro anything it comes by.

I must be doing something wrong, maybe you can help? Went to practice MC (rank 2) on mobs 6 levels lower than me. MC wouldn't hold at all. MC'd mob could usually take four steps, but in no case five (in any direction). Carefully counted this over many mobs. Could not cast a single ability in MC, even without walking. Upon activating any ability, MC was broken every single time (without casting the ability). If any action was taken (e.g. walking a single step), MC would break early. In one case was able to get a neighbor mob to attack the MC, because it was close enough to aggro without walking the MC'd mob. In this case, MC broke upon first strike by the neighboring mob. I hesitate to use MC in an instance until it works a lot better than this. Tests were performed on Wastewater mobs (43-44) in Tanaris by my 49 holy priest). Are shadow-tree abilities needed to make MC work properly? Has MC been nerfed again? Thanks

using mind control tends to generate a lot of aggro from the target. For example, when fighting bloodsail swabbies at Stranglethorn Bay, they tend to get a little annoyed at you when you dunk them into the water.

Just wanted to give heads up. This spell generates a lot of hate on you from the mob your controlling. I was lvl 42 and Mind controlled a lvl 39 and was with a lvl 60 palli. There was soo much hate that the palli couldn't get it off of me, basically the palli had to kill it to get it off of me. My suggestion is to use it when there is a warrior with you and or when doing MC, let that mob that you are MCing die from the other mobs. Warrior has much better hate management to get the mob off of you. Beware, there are many warriors that don't understand how to use their hate management and so if they don't know how to use it, most likely the warrior will not be able to get it off of you.

Looking in my spell book and this spell allows us to use Mind Control on mobs up to level 39 for me, I am a level 37 Priestess. Does the level change as you level to always be +2 your level? If so that is awesome since we dont get the next rank till we hit level 44.

It seems when i cast it on a humanoid, It lasts for no more than 10 seconds and I it shifts the view to the mob controlled. How do i get it to attack another mob?

This is a channel charm. It does not make the target your pet, it gives you direct control of your target while your character stands channeling. To get it to attack, control the mob and attack with it. It can last "up" to 60secs like it says, but you dont want to cast it when you have aggro, inless you are charming the one mob that you have aggro of, or you'll just get hit and lose channeling.

Some basics on it. Cast it on a mob and you look at the world through the mobs eyes and can only use the abilities of the mob. In fact you can run up and look at your body standing there channeling.

It doesn't generate that much hate on the surrounding mobs, but once the minute runs out, the mob you were controlling will be ticked off and come straight for you.

Hence the best way to use is to stand right back, control one mob, have it fight another mob to the death, then either your mob wins but only just, hence when it breaks for you it won't be that hard to kill. Either that or your mob looses, but takes most of the opposing mob with it.

Note your team members cannot attack the mob you are controlling, so it's not a complete "I win" button. It's gotta break before anyone can deal any damage to it, and the second it breaks, it's coming after whoever was controlling it.

This spell is great for instancing. Usually you get the full 1 minute when controlling elites and you'll have a party to save you from the minion when the spell runs out.

It is basicly an aggressive version of the polymoph spell. In addition to not killing your friends, this target will help you.

A great tactic is to cast it on a healer and use all of his mana to heal your own guys. Tried this. great humiliation.

But I need a reason for training higher versions of the spell. Nothing changes - you can always MC a target that is your level +2 - no matter what rank... I don't understand..
