If you're a spellcasting type of shaman, you can use this totem strategically with the earthbind totem. Just plant this near a mob and it'll aggro them...but if you have an earthbind totem planted as well, then they'll plod slowly towards you, allowing you to throw some spells at them before they even reach you.

Near useless IMO because it has to start building aggro from zero. This means its only handy when you use it on a fresh pull. That either makes it a very short stall totem because it dies fast (for escapes on bad pulls?), or a combo totem so mobs don't kill your nova/magma/earthbind totem.

Worthy of note: This totem is only effective when pulling mobs or when another mob attacks you in the middle of combat. While it will grab the attention of fresh mobs, this totem will not be able to taunt them off of you if you've established significant threat with the mobs.

i have had some problems with the new totem stun, it ceeps stuning me! everytime an oponent get stunned i get stuned at the same time! often it helps to relog, but it always keep coming back. anny1 has anny ideas of what it can be and how to fix it?

It's useful for Elemental shamans to divert mobs if you aggro several at once. That way you can cast Lightning Bolts with less interruption.

Also it can keep the attention of mobs while you pop a Fire Nova or Magma totem, which would otherwise aggro mobs and get destroyed instantly.

In PvE, this can be very useful if dealing with multiple mobs, just make sure you only attack one mob and the totem should generate enough aggro to hold the others for a few seconds.
Elites will shread through this totem like they would any other though, so its best to only use it on normal mobs.
In pvp this has little use, but if you can sneak upto a hunter and pop one of these next to his pet the hunter might not realise his pet is attacking a totem and you can attack the hunter free of his pet.
If your against an oponent in PvP who by chance doesn't know what the totem does, put it down and /laugh at him as he quickly finds out the dangers of attacking a stoneclaw totem.

My very favorite use for this totem is dealing with adds when I'm low health. I generally finish off my main mob, drop Stoneclaw and -bandage-. Your heals will draw agro off stoneclaw with a quickness, but bandaging will not. Save my tail a ton.

Although this totem dosnt appear very helpful in pvp there are some good tips and tricks to use it for.

1. when u r using earthbind totem against a melee class they often hit the totem. Although if u throw down a stoneclaw totem many ppl automatically react and hit the totem giving u a 50% chance to stun them for 3secs and giving u time to gain some distance from them .

2. When u see a hunter has set his pet onto you and it charges towards u, you can throw down a stoneclaw totem which will taunt the pet off u.

I use this totem when I am on low health and I get some adds. Stoneclaw totem gets threat on those mobs and that gives me at least a bit of time to heal/bandage myself. The stun chance also helps, the totem doesn't get killed that fast and during a stun a mob won't attack me. Overall, while situational, a very usefull totem

Be careful when expecting this totem to take a mob off of you for a second.
If you pull the mob, and then cause any threat like an AoE totem or any type of healing / damage to the mob, then chances are the totem will not take the aggro.
This totem doesn't create aggro very fast if you are already attacking the mob.

This totem is useful for those who are quick to tap totems in PVP. Also, keep in mind that any attack can cause the stun effect, not just melee attacks. I was dueling a mage and I experimented with this totem, and yes when he Ice Lanced this totem he got stunned for 3 seconds.

This thing gets somewhat replaced at 66 due to earth elemental, if shaman wants to tackle 2 or more mobs he lays down grace air(wraith if elem), mana usually, and searing, when mobs get close throw down stoneclaw and the ones left alone will go for it, and if you back up while they are doing so, so much the better. Large groups and elite mobs dont work to well with this and will only be for a second or two depending on stuns, this is where earth elemental does its job. If you party pulls additional mobs in most non heroics or raids, this totem can give the tank/CC another few seconds to respond.

Last thing to note is the stun gets diminishing returns but by the time it dies or burns out of time the mob will have been stunned only 1 to 3 times, maybe 4. Be smart and stoneclaw totem to compliment your earthbind totem CD in risky wipe escapes.

BTW, the mobs WILL turn on you after, be careful or make sure you stay behind tank and near healer.

this does not get replaces at 66 by earth elemental because this little guy is useful if u wanna get a node or something and there is a mob about also this pulls defensive mobs incase any1 was wondering

If you can do so, move back while the mobs attack the totem, makes it a little more useful. Also good for scoring a few extra seconds on accident pulls.( this will focus threat on you if nothing else gets agro first.)

The Stoneclaw Totem also pulls Neutral (Non-Aggressive) Mobs as well
So be aware of your surrounds before tossing this down.

As of Patch 3.0:
Stoneclaw Totem now grants a buff to the other totems you put up, effectively "shielding" them with it's own health by "grounding" attacks against them into the Stoneclaw Totem.

This has a lot of uses, even though Tremor and Earthbind are ofc unusable while using Stoneclaw due to being Earth school.

if you put a windfury totem then a stoneclaw totem and somebody is attacking the windfury totem, the stoneclaw totem will absorb all the damage and the person attacking can get stunned by just attacking the windfury totem, this includes casters.
Hence https://www.wowhead.com/cata/spell=16130 is now quite a good talent.

The Stoneclaw-Totem gives all other totems an absorb-shield.
The absorb-shield is not affected by Spelldamage or Attackpower or anything.
If I remember correctly the absorb-value was 1088.

it should be noted that any totems that are dropped after casting Stoneclaw Totem will not receive the absorb effect unless another Stoneclaw Totem is dropped

an example would be to cast Stoneclaw Totem, then cast Fire Nova Totem; the Fire Nova Totem will not receive Stoneclaw Totem's absorb effect, so you should cast them in the reverse order

After fooling around with Grounding and Stoneclaw, I found out that yes, it will ground a spell and not get destroyed (assuming you put down the grounding first, otherwise it doesn't get the shield, and if the spell doesn't blow through the shield).

However, there's a 12~ second timer before the grounding will 'pulse' again and be able to absorb another spell, so you'd be able to get 3 or so redirects per cast, assuming the spells don't do enough damage to break the stoneclaw shield.

New 3.1 glyph:

Glyph of Stoneclaw Totem *new* -- Your Stoneclaw Totem also places a damage absorb shield on you, equal to 4 times the strength of the shield it places on your totems.

So is the absorb 1088 base? Does it scale with Spell Power or Attack Power or anything? Does Earth's Grasp affect the absorb shield?

Even without any of that, that's an almost 4400 damage instant cast power word shield for a Shaman when he gets focused. Not bad!

I've made some testing today on this skill due to 3.1 glyph, that is said to place a Shield on you that absorbs 4x the amount another totems would absorb due to Stoneclaw Totem.

The amount totems absorb on live servers is 1085 exacly. Doesnt matter if you have 0 or 928375 spell power, it wont absorb more then that. Apparently, there is no talent to increase this amount either.That would result in a 4340 shield to the shaman every 30 secs, AND, give you the good habit of using this totem, that is very useful to protecting others. On 2x2, playing as holy paladin, while my friend tear the enemy apart, i go there with my super 1hand and break totems with hits that vary from 150 to 200... I would take 4 hits to kill a single totem...

Oh, and Stoneclaw has 1620 HP, + 1085 shield, and apparently, it also has a lesser "damage reduction" that absorbs around 380 dmg every hit, so its health is pretty decent (around 3k~)

I am certainly getting this glyph on my shaman, since what we lack is survivability.

To elaborate, here is a comment by yarai originally posted to Stoneclaw Totem (Rank 7):

Stoneclaw and Pets

1) Permanent/controllable pets (Hunter/Warlock/Mage), that have been specifically ordered to attack a target will ignore threat production. In short, once a pet is told to attack someone by its master, they will continue to do so unless instructed otherwise. STONECLAW WILL NOT WORK.

2) Permanent pets that have engaged on their own (whether because they were set to aggressive, or they are defending their masters) can be peeled via aggro gain and otherwise forced to switch targets based on aggro. In this case, Stoneclaw will work. However, most players don't let their pets just run amok on "aggressive" in PvP or PvE, so this is an unlikely occurence, and easily circumvented (they can just press "attack").

3) "Uncontrollable" pets like treants, snakes (from trap), and elementals from totems can be distracted with Stoneclaw. However, doing so successfully takes some timing, and a lot of luck. Because the aggro generated by the totem is so weak, it doesn't take much to overcome it. Healing, shielding, dispelling, etc. is generally enough to override whatever aggro the totem can produce.

EXAMPLE: Druid summons treants on your priest.

If the priest does nothing, you can drop Stoneclaw and the treants will immediately begin attacking the totem instead.

If the priest shields himself, it is highly unlikely that the totem will be able produce enough aggro to peel the trees away. However, the priest can fade (and warlocks can soul shatter)--depending on what they did, the aggro dump is sometimes enough to make the treants turn to the totem.

I think this will be good for resto shamans versus rogue teams allowing you to survive better. I'm definately getting the glyph as I'm having lots of trouble in 2v2 against mage+rogue teams.

Tnx for the info that with stoneclaw up, it makes grounding work as before, never thought of it :D. I remember trying with a mage before the change and it protected me from 3 polymorphs in a row. Have to rebind stoneclaw to a better place:)

I remember once they wanted to make stoneclaw hp scale with shaman hp, but seems it didn't go that way. I sure hope the hp will increase the damage absorbed so I could benefit from the 2pt talent.

Can any confirm the ins and outs of how the shield feature works on your totems (and yourself, assuming your shaman has the https://www.wowhead.com/cata/item=45778 Glyph). More specifically, is the totem destroyed when a provisioned 'shield' is overcome by damage, or does the shield simply fail on the target in question while the totem and any other 'shield's remain active?
