As of patch 3.2 has been changed to protect a friendly target from critical strikes for 12 seconds while the pet will receive 20% of the incoming damage. This is a revert of the patch 3.1 change in terms of the ability to use this on targets other than the pet-owning Hunter. Being able to grant immunity to critical strikes may for instance be interesting for Unbalancing Strike-type encounters such as Thorim where a briefly lowered defense rating makes tanks crittable again. But the healers must really keep the pet alive then.

The redirected 20% damage portion is nature damage everytime and can -- it would seem -- be (partially) resisted by the pet.

Does that mean you take 100% dmg but won't be crit'd but the pet also takes 20% of those dmg in extra?
Or you take 80% and pet takes 20% like soul link does?

This ability is not like Blessing of Sacrifice. It does not transfer damage. As a sort of "nerf" to this ability (come on, its on a 1 min CD with 12 second duration), your pet also takes 20% of the damage the target takes- The damage is not redirected.

I tested this in a duel against a holy pally. She used judgment 8 times, every one hitting me for exactly 781 damage. She then used it while I had RoS up a total of 4 times. I took the normal 781 damage, but my pet also took 61 nature damage (some of it was resisted).

To answer someone's question above, if you leave this on auto - cast (now that it can be used not just on the pet owner), it will use it as soon as you target a friendly target (including yourself) on the targeted one. That's why it shouldn't be left on auto - cast, and should be macroed ("@" = "target=") :

I recommend using this during bursts, Paladin/Rogue stuns, Surv Hunters' Explosive Shots, to have this active while Spriests/Afflocks are throwing their DoT's, that way they won't be able to crit, if not refreshed, even after RoS, and if you pop RoS when the DoT's are already on you, it won't prevent them from critting, that's how it works.

Amusingly this can be cast on friendly vehicles in battlegrounds and the like. I'd imagine it's seldom worth popping the cooldown for but it does work.

This spell is an amazing counter to a Rogue's smoke bomb.

Useful in both arenas and when, say, a friendly FC getting focused in a BG, huge when enemy players are popping big CDs and the FC is taking increased damage.

Macro it, use it, love it.

After seeing that the enemy hunter freezing trap on my pet did NOT break from the damage taken by roar of sacrifice, I did a couple tests. What I found is that mage polymorph DOES break from roar of sac damage, hunter freezing trap and rogue blind do not. After creating a ticket, asking if this mechanic was working properly Blizzard said they do not "provide game hints" and redirected me here.

The damage taken by the pet seems to be taken as if the controlling hunter was attacking it. Combat log states: "'s Roar of Sacrifice hits for X nature." This makes sense, as the hunter using the skill can see floating combat text above his pet's head, indicating damage done.
Damage done is damage taken, so CC effects should break no?
