Death Knight's tank by chaining cooldowns together, they don't have anywhere near the level of passive or rotational defense as the other tanks.

This causes them to have excellent defenses in PvP without the requirement of giving up offense. However, as they're more of an outlast class, as they're a pure (or, as pure as Priest, Warrior, etc) without any traditional PvP boons like Drains, Healing Debuffs or Crowd Control.

Death Knight's are more unique than most people give Blizzard credit for.

This is very comparable to Barkskin.

Same 1 minute cooldown.
Same 12 seconds duration.
Same nearly irrelevant RP/Mana cost.
20% damage reduction for Barkskin, useable when CC'd.
50% damage reduction for IBF, invulnerable to stuns.

Btw, this would be greatly used in PvP in combination with your trinket of the horde, to prevent a Rogue from stunning you for 12 seconds, and Annihilating them in the process.

Unfortunately this ability gets nerfed next patch:

Icebound Fortitude – now reduces damage by 20% instead of 50%. The amount of damage reduced increases with bonus Defense (to about 35% for 540 Defense, but it can go higher). The stun immunity is intended to be its primary role in PvP.

In the next patch the damage reduction will be reduced from 50% to 20%, but will increase with Defense Skill. I personally think this is really useful in balancing this skill as, not another overpowered PvP skill, but a skill that has true potential when tanking

Weird...I just fought a rogue and a feral druid, both stealthed, i popped empowered rune wep and this just before they got to me, but they sapped me. then i came back later and got gouged several times, with this up, and none of them didn't stun me.

Now that they're increasing the CD on IBF (to 2m, up from 1m), I wonder if they'll make the Defense level scale better (e.g. 50% at 540); else we've been stiffed on another damage-reduction ability in comparison to the Protect Paladin (Divine Protection; always 50%, 2m CD).

Do not forget the nerf to Unbreakable Armor in patch 3.2.2. Death Knight survivability has taken a beating as of late. Yet our DPS gets a boost and our threat generation, that makes no sense to me.

Hey DPS DKs.

I know you're trying to top the meters and that's great. I like seeing DPS at 10k+ DPS rather than sitting at 5k, but if you're doing a fight where you know you're going to take AOE damage, spare the 20 RP to pop IBF. That's 20% damage you don't have to take for 12 seconds.

Is it really that hard for you to grasp the concept that missing out on one Frost Strike or Death Coil to use IBF is more important than missing out on everything because you died?

This CD pisses me off. It has a 3 minute cooldown. That's really bothersome, especially when Lichborne is 2 minutes, along with trinkets and most other cooldowns. IMO this needs to be changed. Nothing about this demands 3 minutes of cooldown.

Can be cast while stunned.

Ring of Frost is freeze effect (Apply Aura: Stun, Mechanic: Frozen) so you can't get out of it with IBF.

Icebound Fortitude is physical effect, it can't be dispelled, purged or spell stolen.

Damage reduction is multiplicative, not additive.
( 20 000 dmg * 0.8 (20% IBF) = 16 000
20 000dmg * 0.8 (20% IBF) * 0.8 (20% bone shield) = 12800 dmg
20 000dmg * 0.8 (20% IBF) * 0.8 (20% bone shield) * 0.6 (40% resilience) = 7680 dmg)

Icebound Fortitude does not reduce fall damage (no damage reduction does, only physical immunities like hand of protection or divine shield does).

This awesomely named ability, in the WotLK beta, used to, aside from reducing damage taken by 50% originally for 12 seconds and making one immune to stuns, turn any and all damage-over-time effects on one to healing-over-time effects.

If I recall correctly, now that I think about it, this DoT-to-HoT effect used to be part of a talent in the Frost talent tree.
