I am very happy with this spell. Decreasing enemy's crit chance helps immensely against hunters and rogues where a good crit can take out a large chunk of a mage's health. Extra crit is always welcome, and the lightning shield-esque retributive damage can can keep your output up even while being interrupted. While Mage Armor is still the #1 choice for PvE, this provides a nice alternative to Ice Armor in the way of defense.

Articfox, I agree the -% Chance to get crit( Resilience ) is a substantial buff to a Mage's survivability and can even be a life saver. Now for the real beauty, the 3% crit is amazing, because it allows ignites more acheivable, and with ignite proccing ignites from the enemy hitting you, your enemies will be constantly bombarded with ignites. Now for the PVE issue, I feel that Molten Armor is far more effective now let me tell you why.... 1% crit=1% more dp, so molten armor= 3% more dps for 30 minutes, even though mage armor has % regen, in TBC i feel it will be useless, because evocation, amna rubies, and invisibility to go ooc and drink to full :) So mana shouldnt be an issue. Where as DPS can never be high enough :)

I have personal experiences that it actually can, since there's a little thing in World of Wacraft named aggro, since the -%threat talents got nerfed, I doubt Molten Armor is better than Mage Armor in PvE, but it's close. :)

Both Molten and Mage armor are good for PvE, you can't say which one is "better" because that depends on the situation. If you're in an aggro sensetive endurance fight then Mage armor would be better, if you're in "Go all out and kill this thing asap" fight then Molten armor with its 3% crit is better. It really depends on the fight and on the mage's playstyle (more crit vs more mana).

As a nearly lvl65 fire mage, I have to say that this spell is currently my new favorite in BC. Since getting it, I have not looked back on Mage Armor which had been my mainstay forever. While I've done a handful of instances, most of my time has been spent questing/grinding and in this scenario Molten Armor is amazing for fire mages. The extra crit == more mana regen as well as more dmg output which means you need to cast fewer spells and this means more mana efficiency. While the reactive dmg listed may seem minor, spell dmg is added which actually makes this amount non-trivial (I've crit for up to 180 + ignite dmg). When grinding, mobs generally only get to melee range about 40% of the time and are generally quite close to dying by the time they do. In these cases, the Molten Armor dmg is often enough to kill them which means I save mana because I don't have to cast another spell to finish them off. When I get time, I'm going to see if I can do a full VC run by only casting Mana Shield and letting Molten Armor do all the work :)

Can Molten Armor dmg benifit from +spell dmg gear? Is it like the Old school Cloak of fire? Does this benifit from Spell Power, mind mastery and other Talents beside Ignite and Impact?

Can Molten armor benifit from shatter?

If it does then this spell will be so overwhelmingly sexy in so many ways.

In the case of Molten Armor versus Mage Armor for PVE, there are a few things to look at. How long the fight is, and whether you have Master of Elements or not.

With 3/3 MoE, you return 0.3 * critical strike chance % mana per cast. Thus, molten armor effectively reduces the mana required to chain fireball by 0.9%. Effectively 4.185 mana per 3 seconds, or 2.79 mana per 2 seconds (regen tick).

Since mage armor only does 30% of your mana regen, the same amount of spirit to give 2.79 mana per 2 inside casting would give 9.3 mana per 2 outside casting. Any mage has this amount base in their class before factoring in spirit.

So the answer? Long fights that draw you OOM, you can go longer and do more overall damage with the use of Mage Armor, shorter fights where you don't risk OOM, you might as well use Molten Armor for the DPS boost.

In the description, the spell says:
Apply Aura: Mod Attacker Spell Crit Chance
Value: -5
which means to me that this armor only works on spell crits, not melee crits. However, the data there could be wrong.

I checked a talent that I know reduces melee crit, the lock talent Demonic Resilence, and it says:
Apply Aura: Mod Attacker Melee Crit Chance
Value: -3
and the same for spell crit (like the tooltip says).

Molten armor does proc ignite, it does take a small amount of your +spelldmg AND it does proc impact.

sweetest thing ever.

As a fire mage with 35% spellcrit (!) then any mob who starts to melee me practically kills itself with ignite-procs and impact procs...

and for the math-hammerers: with 346 +spelldmg my molten armor does 99 fire dmg on anyone hitting me... if that can be of any use

it sure beats the hell out of druid thorn buffs!

you figure a rouge that can hit you 6/7 times with cheap shot and the combined 20% of ing/imp this is a sweet spell

Has nobody noticed that the spell does not include "Apply Aura: Mod Attacker MELEE Crit Chance" like the Demonic Resilience spell tab does? Could it be we're in fact looking at a broken skill or at least a broken tooltip?

For the record, concerning: Apply Aura: Mod Attacker Spell Crit Chance. An observant browser would notice there is no Apply Aura: Mod Attacker Melee Crit Chance as on https://www.wowhead.com/cata/spell=30321 (Demonic Resilience).

Molten Armor also applies to Melee Critical chance. I know it's probably taken for granted, but I don't think any actual testing was done until recently, which confirmed that it does decrease Melee Crit Chance.

With the addition of Molten Shields in patch 2.4.0 Molten Armor combined with Molten Shields and Impact would stun a lot more people. I can't think of anything more handy for a fire mage with a pvp itch they need to scratch than stunning ranged enemies for 2 seconds at no extra cost.

Molten armor and Prismatic cloak is a similair verson of Resil. (similair but not resiliance)

Molten Armor about = 197 resiliance (in regards to crit chance deduction)
Prismatic cloak about = 78 resiliance (in regards to Crit damage reduction) and 157.6 resiliance (in regards to DoT dmg reduction)

so with MA and PC you will have= -5% chance to crit, -4% on crit damage, and -4% DoT damage. If your serious about PvP you will probably hit over 350 resil ... now specced with arcane and frost ... you can "potentially" have
-13% crit chance, -25% crit dmg (25% is the Cap but with PC it can be 29%) -18% DoT dmg.
-13% crit, -20% crit dmg, -18% Dot dmg.
- 13% crit, -20% crit dmg, -18% Dot dmg
Take arctic winds ... against melee- 13% crit, -25% crit dmg, -18% DoT dmg.

against casters ... this doesnt account for resistance or dampen magic. All in all with Imprv Dampen magic, PC, MC and frost Frozen Core .. i had a mages at 70 crit me with 2.1k bolts and white for 1240. i have a -15.5% crit chance reduction .. nice considering most people have about 20% crit chance in 70 braket pvp.

Note that the on-hit effect counts as a damage shield (even if it doesn't follow the "<name> reflects <amount> <damage-type> to <target>." in the combat log, instead it uses "<name>'s Molten Armor hits <target> for <amount>."). Therefore if a target dies which only took damage from this spell, you won't be able to loot it.
The damage it does is increased by all modifiers which increase (or decrease) damage done by a certain amount (including Molten Fury), but it doesn't benefit from spell damage bonuses.
It can crit, using your chance to crit with Fire spells. It can trigger Impact, but will not trigger Ignite.
Reflected, fully resisted spells; missed or absorbed ranged attacks; missed, dodged or absorbed melee attacks won't trigger it (normally it doesn't trigger on spells and ranged attacks without the Molten Shields talent).

Just to confirm with the Molten Shields talent that enables the Molten Armor damage shield to affect hostile ranged attacks and spells:

Does proc when:
Someone wands you.
Someone uses a ranged attack (special shots or autoshot).
Someone throws something at you (Deadly throw)
First application of a harmful DOT (like unstable affliction).

Does NOT proc when:
Subsequent ticks of a DOT
Someone applies a non-damaging debuff (such as purge, with molten armor still active post-purge)

At this point I am not sure if it does proc off Thorns or Paladin's Eye for an Eye.

With this new patch (2.4.2) molten armor's damaging effects are supposed to work with your mana shield and ice barrier up. Anybody tried this yet?

When i stack 5 seals of vengeance in a mage the molten armor does me dmg evry time my seal dmg him, is that right?
I mean seal of vengeance is a dot not a hit...

Test notes for patch 2.4.3 state "Frost Armor, Ice Armor, Mage Armor, and Molten Armor are no longer Magic effects and cannot be dispelled."

A positive change for mages, particularly in PVP.

Still only 3% crit... Seeing the changes done to Fel Armor (180 Spelldamage + 30% extra based on Sprit, as well as 30% mana regen), I'm thinking this armor needs to be redone a little. Maybe add a sliding scale based on a stat, such as Intellect, like the Fel Armor change.

I think it's worth note that if you're going through a zone/instance and you're farming non-elite mobs for anything, and they're low enough where your Molten Armor will kill them, you should probably turn it off. Because if they die from your armor procs, they will NOT be lootable.

Molten armor is useful when boosting someone in stockade etc (melee mobs).

You can run around instance and spam arcane blast, mana shield and/or ice barrier up.

Easy and fast way imho :)

Quoting MMO-Champion from the latest build: Molten Armor now causes 170 Fire damage when hit for all ranks (Up from 75/130/170) and also increases your critical strike rating by 25% of your spirit.

Well with the Arcane Meditation giving 50% mana reg in 3.1 Spirit will be more useful for mana reg. And unglyphed Mage armor will also give 50% mana reg. so in 3.1 gonna have a tough time deciding which armor & glyphs to use.

Also I see most high end mages are Deep Arcane (57/3/11) and 11 in frost (3%hit + icy veins) spec and have rotation where more mana reg will allow more AB stacks and give higher DPS. So that spirit is acturally a pretty good stat as it is, personally I would prefer crit or haste but i wouldnt avoid spirit gear.

On another note I think for arcane spec mage armor is better for DPS during boss encounters on a regular run (keep in mind of down time)

With T7 gear and the glyph, you should get around 5% more crit as normal. But when you get prayer of spirit, kings and MotW... it becomes more.

Molten armor used to be more fun when it had a chance to stun rogues etc.; it was a humorous talent that had pvp benefit.

The change has indeed made spirit almost more valuable than stamina to up your crit rating in pvp. Mages still get owned in pvp by ret pallies and shamies. Facing loks you have to switch to mage armor to have 1/2 a chance.

NOTE: It takes 166 Int for 1% crit vs. 84 spirit w/ molten armor at lvl 80 according to wowwiki.

As of patch 3.1, this ability has ZERO additional benefit over Rank 1, yet costs 13 gold to purchase an additional rank for no benefit.

Unless you have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, do NOT purchase additional ranks of this ability until Blizzard takes their medication and fixes this.

Likely few will care, but I will note for those that do: the fire damage proc from Molten Armor does not flag you for PvP. Molten Armor no longer has a fire damage proc, and it's no longer possible to ride through an opposing faction town without being flagged for PvP anyway.

Dont underestimate the power of the damage done of this ability in PvP.

Combined with Nibelung this is very powerful. Having 2 or more valkyrs in the field at the same time is no rare sight.
