Starfire, like other 3,5 cast spells, will add 100% of your spell damage to its cast damage, even after talent modification to reduce cast time.

I was quite glad to see this when I went on the other day. This + the increase of spell damage. (Originally had around 90, but now at 191) = awesomesauce. Balance will ruel the day., I warned them all... furbies will rule the world. Basically, this + force of nature + cyclone + entangled roots + wrath + moonfire spam + healing power + forms of attack power = unstoppable when mastered. Oh, except for pallies.

Edit - I meant rank 8 which is a step up from this.

The starfire spell is only used with druids. It is really powerful but it takes a long time to cast. Should only use it for pulling creatures to you not to kill them. You would die alot faster if you tried to use it for killing purposes when they are still full life.

I must disagree with Jcj, I find this quite useful in combat, when my three trees are beating up on the enemy, and i have them entangled.

I am a pure Balance druid and I worship Starfire. If I judge my distance correctly I can get off 2-3 starfires, and sine I have the starefire stun I can sometimes get as many as 5 off before I'm in melee. Then a smack with moonfire, swarm, a wrath or two and a finishing Starfire.

In a long winded fight, such as a boss, I will sit and spam starfire the whole fight. I won't even touch wrath. I am a moonkin druid and I'm always in a mage group, my mages love me and I love them, they demand their moonkin crack :) I have no issues with mana, ever.

Soling, I use starfire unless I happen to fight a mob with incredibly fast attack speed that i can't root. When in doubt, root it, if it's immune, wrath it.

Prepatch I critted for 1800-2000, after this patch, I can crit for 2500 with all of my damage gear, and when I was fighting ossiran before patch, I critted him for 5k, I'm DYING to see what I hit him for now :)

So I quite disagree with the assesment that starfire is useles sin combat.

This spell is pretty much only useful as an opening spell, unless you happen to spec balance. If you choose the balance tree, the crit chance and damage is increased and it also gains a 15% chance to stun (when 3/3). This makes the spell much better, and it is then a good idea to use in the middle of battle, too. I usually start spamming it around 50% health to try and get the stun so I can then get a heal off. It works pretty well, though if you're outside and able to root, that's a much better idea to get some distance and time for healing. =)

Yeah starfire is a great skill root the target starfire moonfire then depending on how fast it must die and how fast the target dps you may do moonfire spam or back to starfire. Great skill even for feral druids ;) Not all fights can be won with just melee.

Standard nuke for druids. Good damage/mana ratio and will let a druid put out close to what a frost mage can do. Not approriate for melee targets. Use the faster cast Wrath against targets trying to hit you. An even better approach would be to root the target and back off to max cast range.

At about +650 Spell Damage (common at 70) and with a buff or two (e.g. trinket, battlegrounds buffs) this spell can crit for 4000 damage.. This is, of course, with 5 points in the Wrath of Cenarius talent.

Yea, this is the basic nuke for Balance Druids. Use to open, Roots (when needed), spam Wrath. Wrath has a better DPS than this initally but, the bonus damages stack up to give this a much higher bonus, expecially w/ Wrath of Cenarius.

When Nature's Grace procs and you cast Wrath, the global cooldown is reduced along with the cast time, so if you dealt a crit (heal or damage), you cast a Wrath with a 1-second cast time, and you can cast something else immediately without waiting half a second.

The damage coefficients scale directly with casting time in most cases, which means you're not losing any bang for your buck with Wrath. In fact, with Starlight Wrath you get a larger Benefit from +damage with Wrath than Starfire. Wrath has a damage coefficient of 57.14%, which means with 2 casts of Wrath you get a total bonus of +114.28% of your spell damage, while one cast of Starfire, which takes exactly the same amount of time, nets you 100% of your spell damage.

Wrath of Cenarius lessens the gap slightly, but benefits Wrath and Starfire equally, meaning Wrath ends up better in the long run.

For PvE raid this is your main nuke. Don't ever spam Wrath unless you really want to be an OOMkin. Raid buffed, with a good equipment (1k spell dmg unbuffed), this spell really shines. It gets 15% more damage in raid, because of shadow priests (Misery, 5% to spell dmg) and warlocks (curse of shadow, 10% shadow and arcane). It probably outdps Wrath, since I get 6k starfire crits on some bosses, while of Wrath I just get 2500 (3k+ if a enh shaman has Stormstrike on).

Oh, and don't compare this to fireball by just what the tooltip says. Because of talents, Starfire scales much better than Fireball, so with better gear for the raid, the closer that will be te gap between the moonkin and the fire mages. And that's without counting our dots. ^^

This spell unfortunately pulls aggro extremely easy, and if you raid as a moonkin you should definitely get Subtlety (3rd tier resto talent that reduces threat produced by spells by 20%). But yes, this spell has very good damage per mana, and large crits are achievable. I once got a 5k crit with my Glowing something trinket, and Berserker.
Moonkins scale extremely well due to: Vengeance, Lunar Guidance, Moonfury, and Wrath of Cenarius.

The effect that makes Starfire the better choice for nuking than Wrath in almost all endgame raiding actually has nothing to do with the druid's ability itself, but the fact that a warlock with Malediction should be putting up Curse of Shadows for a 13% increase in all Arcane damage you deal. No matter where you are, the damage per mana from Starfire is better than the ratio for Wrath, but once you reach around 1500 spell damage, including raid buffs, flasks, etc., Starfire with the CoS multiplier will actually begin to outpace Wrath for DPS as well. Add in that the tier 5 and 6 4 piece bonuses also increase Starfire's DPS and that threshold decreases to around 12-1300 +dmg if you have those sets.

With Starfire, under ideal circumstances you can get the following multipliers applied to its dps:
1.1 from Moonfury
~1.3 from crit rating
1.13 from Curse of Shadows with Malediction
~1.05 from Nature's Grace procs
1.1 from tier 5 4 set bonus

With wrath, the only scaling effects you get are:
1.1 from Moonfury
~1.3 from crit rating
A lucky stormstrike here and there.

With 4 pieces of tier 5, Starfire is not only better damage per mana, but under the right circumstances also scales past Wrath for DPS.

The base cost of this spell seems extremely high for something that's trainable to a 3s cast.

Compare to a mage's fireball that does 888 - 1132. The fireball gives a negligible dot that does 116 over 8s, but this dot gets constantly overwritten as mages spam fireball in the classic 2.x rotation.

The argument before WotLK was that mages made up for this in other areas, like crit, talents like ignite, icy veins etc. However, druids got even more buffs to this spell while mages instead got a completely different spell to spam in raids - Frostfire Bolt. That one does a whopping 722-838 base damage, and it's a 3s cast time that's not modifiable by talents. Accordingly, Starfall gets more spell power contribution than Frostfire Bolt as well.

None of this makes sense as applied, since mages do and of right should be doing more damage than Balance Druids in raids. I just don't understand how this happens under the known mechanics of the game.

i LOVE it as a lvl 20 bala druid just 3 casts andBOOM its dead (even a guy 3-5 lvls higher than me cant touch me with starfire-moonfire-entangling rootsx2=dead). doesnt use much mana and does amazing crits (220 on 3rd cast) with starlight wrath, moonglow, and nature's majesty.

The Doomkin's main nuke. For groups and raids, it's generally better to use this as your primary spell.
Starfire has higher DPM (in this case, 1028-1212 at 16% of your base mana before taking talents spell power into consideration) than Wrath (2 Wraths deal 1106-1246, but cost an additional 6% of your base mana just to potentially do 34 more damage), and it scales much better with spell power than Wrath (100% (120% with 5/5 Wrath of Cenarius), compared to 57.1% (67.1% with 5/5 WoC); these numbers taken from http://www.wowwiki.com/Spell_power_coefficient).

@Darkcanuk: Personal best is almost 20k (Thaddius with 11 Polarity stacks).

i find this a very good spell for opening a fight with (in PVE at least) because even as a feral druid with no SP i get crits up to about 500 at lvl 24

In low PvP brackets, this spell has a devastating damage if you are a balance druid, wear arcane spell power and crit gear. It can easily take more than half of a twinked character's health, needless to say it usually one-hits lowbies. A druid starting to cast a starfire on a battleground is one of the scariest sights and anyone who knows what he's doing will try to nuke him before he can successfully erase a helpless victim off of the battlefield within a mere 3 sec period.

This spell is pretty good. At lvl 60 if you have all the talent upgrades on it. With all the upgrades on it at lvl 60 it crits for over 1000 damage. And that my freinds is good enough to finish of a seasoned mage. So all in all if you want to put the talent points into it, this is a realy good spell. Of course feral talents are much better.

starfire is not an aoe and it is not horrible. while it may have a long cast, the enemy (if they're melee) should be rooted so interruption is not a problem. A balance druid without starfire would be horrible, especially since balance druids have very few skills to use. And please do not say how bad something is until you've actually played a balance druid.

Edit: I also noticed that when attacking something huge (like three times your size) the starfire blast is 3 times its normal size, making this huge explosion on the screen (it's pretty cool to watch). This is also the same with moonfire.

Even if it is a long casting time i must say that i can critt away 2/3 of a mages/priests health + a wonderfull chance to stunn em. IM a lvl 62 with a not very special gear and i critt 2200 with this spell, and i critt 700 with moonfire, that means 2900 dmg in 3 secs if i am lucky and when i've done that, my target will die after some wraths and some moonfires or treants. In fact, this spell does a bit more dmg than a frostbolt and to all you mages out there who says it is not true, it is becouse of your gear, me and my mate (lvl 62 frost mage) tryed it... But then a mage have alot of instants but also alot of cooldowns, fire mages are easy, weak, cooldowns and easy, arcanes are good but frost with cold snap are the best. BTW i PWN ferals with 2/3 of my health left in duels, ferals are good but if ANYONE lets me cast this spell and i critt, they are so wasted..... balance is tha best |..| (-_-) |..|

blance owns pvp, especially against feral druids, but for solo/group, go feral, goes much faster and you lose like no health, i've played both so dont say im siding with the one i play. i like feral more, but thats just one druid. DRUIDS FTW

I am currently a balance druid lvl 70. I used to be feral but when i switched over i noticed a great jump in my dps in raids. This move is great for raids because it cost less than 2 wraths and talented with the +20% spell dmg compared to wrath's +10% spell dmg it does more (at least at my spell dmg). This is good for not only nuking but for steady dps in combo with Insect Swarm. There is my 2 cents

At the moment i am almost lev 65 balance drood and i crit once every 5 spells or so, and a starfire crit can ToAsT the enemy worth almost 3000!
i can finish a guy my lev in 2 starfires which wen combined with talents:
5.5 second combat
the enemy knows u r there for 2.5 sec b4 its DED =)
i can solo elites 2 or 3 levs above me if i am lucky enough for a crit or two =)
