This might be obvious, but the shaman's Lightning Shield counts as nature damage as well, and will expend one of the two charges on the Stormstrike debuff if the target attacks you and takes damage from it.

This skill is devastating. Now that it's buffed to 10 second cooldown, very cheap on mana, and working with dual wield, it's amazing. On PTRs it was not proccing Windfury but according to beta testers that was a bug that has been fixed. I am not 100% sure if it is now proccing in live 2.0, I haven't tested it extensively yet. This fix went in quite awhile back though, before the parry buff, so I'd imagine it made it in.

Keep in mind that the debuff is not the primary purpose of SS. Some extra ES damage is handy but it's really not spectacular. The whole point is the huge burst and windfury proc potential. It was also very nice with old rockbiter for controlled burst, but that's ancient history now.

When DWing, both hits count as "one hit" for purposes of hit/miss calculations. In other words, you pop SS, and it gets dodged, you get no attacks. When it lands, it appears as two seperate hits. This is similar to Mutilate. However, they calculate crit independantly, which is helpful for crit procs like Flurry and Unleashed Rage (which is also awesome btw).

Due to the latest patch Stormstrike can no longer proc with windfury as it is yellow damage. other than that Stormstrike +earth shock is an amazing combination to deal huge burst damages every few seconds.

if yo have specked SS you certanly have used DW and WF all the time? well here is a secret, WF has a hidden CD, its about 1,5 sec but enough for you to get heavy delayed if you have weapons faster than 1,7-1,8. for max dmg with SS you should use WF on main-hand and rockbiter on off-hand. but dont tell the draeneis ok?

Anyone else noticed that it says 5 yard range here, but in game, not only is it not 5 yards, but it also changes from 6 yards when in combat, and 9 yards when not in combat (according to my tooltip). Also, even though it says 9 yards, it still stays out of range until you get right up to the enemy...

Rogue poisons will benefit from the Stormstrike debuff but will not eat up charges. In attention, Thorns will also do 20% more damage while the debuff is active without using up charges.

The current incarnation of Stormstrike makes enhancement shamans a good partner for balance druids and elemental shamans. While it doesn't have the staying power of Curse of Elements, an extra 20% damage can be a lot when you take those two nuking classes into consideration.

Windfury weapon has a "hidden" 3 second cooldown that is not going to be removed. Therefore, slow weapons are best to use, especially in the off-hand.

In fact, say you had a 90 dps 1H dagger of 1.5 speed. Assuminig you went to the AH and got a 2.6 speed 65 dps off-hand. Your dps would go up (since the slower off-hand is less likely to eat the WF cooldown and more mana Shamanistic Rage).

DWers use WF5/WF5, and don't use anything different.

I am DW enh shaman i always use 2 fast weapons

main 1.5 speed and WF5 then I get more chance to get WF proc every other swing if flurry comes in well it get even faster and other flameshock since it dont suffer off hand penalty its all about speed for DW enhanced shaman... low hits but many many many..

Ive tried many combinations and the one post WF5/WF4 combo is the one that showed the most damage per second on damage meter...

Blizz really hates shamans for taking away WF5/WF4 possibility

The icon has been changed to match that of the one in the PTR. In small talk, we recieved the "Mage" treatment for a balancing patch, we got a new icon. Though Healing Grace change will be sweet.

I've heard that when you put WF on your offhand and WF totem for your MH it doesn't share cooldowns, so im wondering is this better than both WF and Agi totem? (Still best way for dungeons anyway. since other melee's need WF badly)

Dual-wielding windfury always provides the best dps. Quoted from Elitestjerks.com, "When you are wielding a two handed weapon, or are using a shield, your chance to proc windfury on any landed attack outside the 3-second cooldown is 20%. Stormstrike increases the damage from all sources of nature damage including poisons(dot poisons are best as they will not consume a charge)as well as the Envenom ability of rogues, this is a great spell and a must for raiding to have an enhancement shaman in the raid if you have rogues present.

For pvp (player versus player) you can use this ability in two ways. I have 2x1H weps and a 2H wep. This is great because:
1: I can nearly 1hit cloth users (mages,priests and warlocks) only by using a stormstrike while weilding my 2H weapon. you just have to be a little lucky, and have a descent crit %. If your WF procs with your stormstrike, or the melee attack that follows, AND one of the two WF's crit, you have done about 550-750 dmg on your stormstrike, 550-750 dmg on your next melee attack, around 900-1200 dmg on your NON-crit WF and 1400-1900 dmg with you WF crit (I use Stormherald with executioner, so maby I do a little more/less damage than any of you shamans that reads this). This will do about 4020 damage, just in 1 click. if you then use your Earth Shock ability, that will do around 950-1050 (for well geared pvp shamans, that is (ofc.) enhancement with the Mental Quickness talent 3/3), and if you're lucky will crit about 1500-1750 damage.
This will then do (around):
650 damage for Stormstrike
650 damage for you following melee strike
1050 damage for you NON-crit WF
1650 damage with your Crit WF
this will do 4k dmg, and then with your earth shock
1k damage with non crit
1625 damage with crit
This will do 5k with non-crit ES and 5625 with crit ES.

this will maby not kill your target, but you've done atleast 50% of his/her totalt hp in 2 clicks and 1.5 sec. thats a lot! :-)

Couple of questions (hopefully not redundant):

1. When using Stormstrike you want to punch it directly after your normal attack hits is that right? This will ensure that Stromstrike is hitting during the delay between your swings.

I am also curious if Blizz has your normal weapon speed on a separate timer from Stormstrike - in other words when Stormstrike hits it won't restart the weapon swing delay on your normal attack? To put this into a real-world example, if you have a 2h 3.00 speed weapon and you swing, then hit Stormstrike, your Stormstrike hits and then you are only waiting ~2 seconds until your normal hit swings again?

2. Is it best to use slower weapons as slower weapons tend to have a higher max dmg and with the hidden Windfury cooldown fast weapons would be hitting within the cooldown period and wouldn't count towards the proc rate of Windfury?

Now that said, if you have two very quick weapons (1.6 speed) could you expect that even though a couple of hits might get eaten in the hidden Windfury cooldown you are still hitting more frequently and are thus going to proc Windfury more often?

So confusing! I'm just going to hope to achieve what Sihd wrote above and knock some clothies out of the park...

Zothar, to answer your first question, in my opinion the most opportune time to use Stormstrike is the second it has finished cooling down. :P

Though certainly if you're attempting to do a burst of damage at once for some reason, you could wait until you've attacked before using it. But otherwise, you want to be hitting Stormstrike every single time it's not cooling down.

Apparantly the Enhancement shamans most spammed spell is actually going to get a buff and a new animation change in WotLK!

The synergy from this is ridiculous with the new patch.

Stormstrike-> (Earth Shock, Lightning Shield, Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning) -> Elemental Devastation -> Flurry

Haven't even accounted for other stuff like maelstrom. Lots of neat procs going on, though, that's for sure.

Stormstrike, along with the rest of the Shamans arsenal of lightning based spells (Earth Shock included) all appear to have brand new electricity sound effects with the introduction of 4.0.1

It's a minor detail, but still cool nonetheless.

It needs to be clarified that since 4.0, this changed to increase critical strike chance for ONLY the following effects for 15 seconds, by 25% (35% glyphed) :
- lightning bolt
- chain lightning
- lightning shield (need to confirm static shock proc)
- earth shock

It would appear lava lash, lava burst, flame shock, its ticks, and flametongue weapon procs are excluded from this +crit chance. So, still "nature damage" sources only. Unleash Elements is incapable of dealing nature damage, it seems.

Don't be so shameful!

Information such as that is interesting to note and relevant to the ability. It is absolutely warranted to include notations like that.

If I may add some information regarding 4.2: Some may find it intriguing that male Dwarves got a uniquely new animation assigned to this ability alone. I haven't seen it used anywhere else. Upon using Stormstrike, male Dwarf characters jumps into the air and crash down violently with both weapons.

I can't say if other races also received new and unique animations, but for male Dwarves, this is so.

I dont care what anyone says about SS. Yes its mana ^&*!@age but its really well worth it. Right now i'm only lvl 49 for AB / WSG purpose until i lvl out of it with pvping. With Kang the Decapitator + Crusader i've crit for 1900(with WF proc) and if that didnt finish them SS will or 1 of my shocks. Right now i'm 31 enchancement / 9 restro. But realizing you barely last long enuf to heal nor cast a heal in PVE (battlegrounds). I'm going to switch to 20 elem / 31 enchancement due to 1 main reason. I barely last long enuf to worry about mana soo why not do more dmg with some shocks :D.7 out of 10 I usually hit SS right after the first hit. If its a group of them. Other then that i save it for a finishing move. All in all. If you like to do damage this is for you. If you dont believe me check this out.

With the new 1.11 patch, SS is less mana cost, lower cooldown, INSTANT, and doesnt interact with the normal swings. I use this whenever i can. When in last patch, it wasnt so good... Get this new skill, it will serve you well.

This move is the best thing since sliced bread for mass pvp in battlegrounds.
1) low cooldown
2) cooldown of its own, not the same as shocks
3) debuff; followed by earth shock and lightning shield proc
4) does more dmg if you have slower weapon AND can crit like normal attacks
5) adds nice feeling for pvp; you feel less relied on windfury
6) goes well with the new patch for melee-orientated shamans like me, since its followed by improved weapon enhancement and right after weapon mastery talents.

Im saying that with stormstrike + windfury proc + earthshock you slice a good chunk off your foes hp.

In Pve i usually use it to increase the damage my lightning sheild does. its only a difference of 40 damage, but hey, more is more. i like it in pvp because it adds that little oomph that you need if your last swing didnt deliver the killing blow. i think its a really useful ability, all instant shaman spells are mana hogs, so why rag on something that isnt much different than the others?

You might have noticed that the recent changes made to Stormstrike have made it so that it doesn't proc Windfury anymore. Before 2.0.1 you could basically one-hit a person with a Stormstrike attack followed by windfury crits. You still can, since Stormstrike is an extra attack and you will have an autoattack also which has the same chance.

However, this is not working as intended, and has been fixedd on patch. Not on live servers yet though.

Each of these is different so that wouldn't work. Just as frost and flame shock say they do frost and fire damage, so mage spells state the type of damage they do as well-arcane, fire, and frost. They don't deal "nature" damage so it doesn't work.

this is an instant cast spell. is the mana reduced by the shaman talent and if so, in which way?

1. ex:8% of 4000=320/320-6%= 300.8

Also would Elemental Fury effect the crit bonus as well. Elemental Fury is a 21 points elemental talent. Says it increases your crit bonus of ... Nature spells by 100%. It would be sweet if this worked.

Windfury is not nature damage, its just normal atks with additional atk power dealt twice in a row and can proc off anything in your weapon.

The common mistake people take it for nature damage is because they see high armored mobs getting hit as if by a spell, armor ignored.

This is atk power at work, how well you hit your target damage and chance works in an equation that includes your level, your atk power, your hit rating, your crit rating and the type of damage you are dealing (Stormstrike and normal atks are different and are affected by armor differently, proven by Uldaman boss and my Ravager.)

Stormstrike does not give bonus to Windfury, it does to Earth Shocks Lightning bolts and other nature spells like wrath and weapon procs similar to Gahz'rilla Fang.

Stormstrike's damage is similar to Wound, it is physical but is less hindered by armor than any normal attack. Therefore making it top choice against high armored targets like paladins and warriors, starting a fight with it is a must as it doubles your chance of Windfury.

Windfury replicates your normal attacks however when used with Stormstrike it does not have that same school of physical damage, this is not theorizing all good enhance shamans know this. Windfury's each attack is considered an attack from your weapon, not a skill and is a normal attack and is hindered by armor (due to the increase in atk pwr u might not notice this, try using a level 9 weapon to test it works).

The reason why people say enhance shamans should use slow weapons is 50% because of this skill, it lets you attack once every 10 seconds and this could mean 33% more damage if you are using a speed 4 weapon. Fast weapons do not get as much from this, for a speed 1 weapon it's just 10% more dmg.

With the BC patch the cost for this skill is lowered to 8% of the shaman's base mana Base mana is mana counted through intellect not affected by gear or buffs, making it the most efficient damage skill in the enhance arsenal.

A dagger wielding shaman would rather off spend his mana on shocks than on this, an axe wielding shaman saves mana by using this instead of shocks.

Using this often in instances and a Dreadforge Retaliator often give me the title of most damage dealt, usually 30-40% of the damage in a 5 man team without mages. With 2 mages, near 30% and second place one frost mage was lagging bad doh she was third.

If you have lightening shield up and you open with this then the shield orb might use up one of the two charges which is annoying because you really want to use an earth shock :(

Some great comments here but a bit out of date.

To put things straight

1) SS can trigger WF anytime, WF is on a 3 sec hidden CD so if your first hit procs WF, wait another second or so to put SS. Better, open with SS when solo, wait if in party and you have tank. WF does NOT do more damage, but it does when specced with EW, so crits are even more cause WF crit is 200 % not 150 as spells are. SS does exactly the same damage as white (auto) damage, it looks yellow so you know that was your SS. It's like an extra swing you get, with both weaps if DW.

2) PVP -> Spam spam spam, whatever is up, use it, shammies are burst damage dealers so put SS anytime when its up, fights wont last longer as 2 earthshocks, 12 secs, and SS makes the next 2 nature spells xtra damage. Mana cost is low, shammies are even better as ever with shamanistic rage (last enhanc talent).

3) with MQ +30 % spell and healpower, we get 300 xtra spell damage if we have 1K AP, thats a lot. alwayt put str of earth totem for even more damage AND spell damage and GoA for crit.

4) Flurry and focused go together, so crit = 30 % faster swing + mana reduced for next spell is 60 % from the focus.

5) put 11 points in elemental for xtra shock damage and clearcasting, another 40 % less mana for the next 2 of any spells after spell crit, it does go together with shamanistic focus since 2.4, so your next 2 shocks are MANA FREE if focussed is up.

But your crit has to be higer as 20 - 25 % , you know WF can crit too, so you are always in focus and flurry.

6) Guyz, i know 2H rocks in pvp, and i do it myselve (hehe Unbreakable ;-)) but shammies are DW now, use the slowest poss in both hands. A green 70 2.6 mace or axe does more damage as an epic dagger 1.8 speed even if the dagger has more top damage ! Simply because a faster OH will 'eat up' your MH WF procs, look that up in forums,its true. (OH WF does 50 % dmg)

7) KEEP WF UP ALL THE TIME ! really , its doubble yellow damage explained before, WF can trigger procs like LS, crusader, mongoose and the crits are more damage. Oh and it can crit ofc, remember that shammy in chat syaing woot double WF crit ? he did see some big yellow numbers and most prob whatever he was beating was dead in a split second.

Shammies rule burst, thats it, dont be afraid that you have to 'save' a spell or mana based attack like pala have to do (they are OOM after 2 mobs if they nuke them down with all they have) we are so mana efficient now, whatever you do in PVP, PVE, raid or 5 man.

8) In boss fights, specially 5-man, let your tank take agro like mad, w8 for 5 sunders, even though enhanc have 30 % less threat with mellee, shocks don't, frost shock can pull loads of agro (save your buddies with it) ES too so watch when you nuke. Raids ? watch out at start, see if boss is tauntable or not (!) and just nuke away.

All nature damage is affected by SS, so scorpids, rogues (envennom), Moonkin ... but try to spam ES directly after SS so its yours, most prob DoT from rogue or pet will eat the second.

My 70 shammy does over 1500 WF crit with the S1 axe in MH, and ES if lucky crits over 1500 too. I have about only 1 K ap, but specced very well. At dps meters in raids or in AV i can join top 3 easily. Lot of work to do, i'm just alt, but imagine in S4, sick, sick damage. My rogue is full S2 and has troubble to keep up with the shaman.

As you have found out by now, shamans have gone thru some major changes that have made excellent dps class in raids, before it was either PVP or resto in PVe (that was at 60).

Can this extra attack proc Windfury ?

A couple of patches ago, Windfury was bugged. Im not exactly sure which patch it was as I wasnt playing Shaman very much when it happened, but it was during the change of WF to yellow damage. During this time, WF both ate Flurry procs and didnt trigger off Stormstrike. Both of which are bugs.

Stormstrike DOES have the ability to proc Windfury at time of writing, patch 2.0.6.

They have also corrected its eating of Flurry.

Tip on use: If you are dual wield, note this strikes with both weapons. Take your crit value and double it, thats the chances youre going to get Flurry when this is used. Instead of spamming it on cooldown, consider not casting it when you have Flurry up, and use it to kickstart your Flurry once it goes down.

Stormstrike has been updated in Season of Discovery phase 2.

The following changes were made;

The cooldown was reduced from 20 seconds to 6 seconds.
The ability now simply increases nature damage against the target by 20% for 12 seconds, rather than solely for the next two attacks.
The mana cost was reduced to approx. 6% base mana.

These changes do not apply to Classic Era.
