This attack does a bit more damage then Ferocious Bite and should be used on Mobs with alot of life since it is a DoT(damage over time), Ferocious Bite would be more used if the target is almost dead but if your fighting a boss it can get you up top on the damage meter and costs 5 less energy then Ferocious Bite.

At 1800 AP, this ticks for about 470 damage (assuming mangle is up). Very useful on boss fights that bleed. Not as effective when soloing where maim or bite can nearly finish off your enemy.

Not Really accurate on the dmg scale.. at lvl 61, with about
1200 AP, i have bites that crit close to that 2.5k mark you were referring to, so to say that at 2k AP, and only bite for 2.5k dmg.. something is not right there.

On the whole, a good rule of thumb is to bleed if they are not gonna die from the bite, PLUS, you can stack the bleed dmg, (mangle/rake/pounce) if you crit alot, with talents, you can get 2 combo points per crit, so pounce, shred, (shred again if you have the talents), mangle (you should be at 5 pts now) if not rake that will put you at 5.. then rip, then repeat. bite should only be used for pvp burst dmg, and to do what it was intended for .. a FINISHING MOVE

Rip does do a lot more damage as fer bite, as a lvl 70 druid (just lvlvd, poor gear) it ticks around 480 for me, and ofcourse ignores armor!!, so you'll have to use it against high armor bosses for sure, knowing tht fer bite only crist around 2-3k vs high armor mob.
different vs normal trash mobs in instances though, knowing that the mob ur killing at that time wil probably not last the full time, you can better you the bite on them.

How your rotation usually works: Mangle, four seconds to get 40 energy back, Shred, four seconds, Shred, four seconds - twelve seconds total. If you have good enough agility, you should almost always be getting a crit for an extra combo point so you can Rip for four points. The Rip debuff lasts twelve seconds, so you'll be able to throw another one on right after the last one ends.

The point about Ferocious Bite using up all of your energy is also important. Shred with 2/2 shredding attacks costs 42 energy. If you use FB, you'll have to wait three ticks before having the energy for your next Shred, but you always have those spare couple of points if you're Ripping.

this is the must have ability for raids and instances if your feral dps. its only lack is for soloing, because most mobs your level will die around the time you get the 5th point on your target

This is the main finishing move for raiding druids. It provides some serious DPS and is a bleed you'd rather not see on anything but your enemies!

As just said, this is the main 'Finishing Move' for feral dps druids.
Considering the feral AP in game right now, an average FB crit (depending on armor of the enemy) is about the same of a Rip ability. But what makes Rip to be the Finishing move are these points:
- FB does not always crit
- Rip ignores armor of the enemy since the Mechanic is 'Bleed'
- If Mangle is applied the damge of Rip increases
- And with Glyph of Rip including (2) gears from the T7 set rip lasts much longer = more tics = more damage

Although, if a boss/add/mob will die in less than 12-20 seconds there isnt really a point in using it, in this situation FB is better.
For guys loving to see your FB crit, no problem, if you have glyphed and have the set bonus from T7 - rip lasts 20sec. In other words there is a chance to pop a FB before saving up more combo points for your next Rip. Because everyone loves to see crits like 13k when the trinket procs =)

Currently, at patch 3.0.8, is the best DoT in the game while correctly talented.
No other DoTs can match with this.

In 3.1 w/ the Shred+Rip Glyphs+2pcT7 it ends up as a 40-50k damage DoT over 26sec, though its losing SOME in 3.2 not enough to matter.

This ability is much stronger than the rogue's counterpart. Rip does 3000 + 30% * AP total damage vs 1700 + 30% * AP damage done by Rupture. However, the move requires 30 energy to perform while the rogue needs 0 energy to use his finisher (considering Relentless Strikes, which most players will spec into).

If Rip is a bleed effect, and the best finishing move for cat form druids, why do I see so many cats gemmed for armor penetration? Is Ferocious Bite better than Rip if you have enough armor penetration?

Also worth noting for bear off-tanks who have nothing else to do (AKA one-tank bosses like Icehowl), or for bears trying to solo old content, a mangle plus a full five stack of Lacerate plus a 5-combo point stack, plus a little Rake, can put out some serious damage. Just make sure you don't let Lacerate fade away when you're in cat form.

Most bear tanks have at least 3/5 Furor, so energy should be no problem.

I am surprised that there has yet to be a post-cataclysm comment here.

Rip and Rake are now the VERY TOP dps contributors and you will almost never use FB if you are working combo points and energy regeneration wait time correctly. The feral Mastery greatly increases all bleed damage done, and with a green-geared level 85 feral druid, you can easily have Rip to tens of thousands of damage. If you stack mastery and are well geared, the damage output of Rip as well as rake is rediculous!

NEVER use FB over Rip. If you have a large amount of time on rip left and you have 5 combo points suddenly due to consistent criticals, use roar. It is much more helpful than you may think.

Just wondering, how much does Rip tick for at lvl 85? Any answer is good but I'm especially looking for the approximate tick for a fairly good geared feral pvper on another equally geared player. The Rake ticks would also be awesome to know, in the same approximation! :>

Surprised there's no comment on this. Whenever a feral druid opens on you in arena, they will do Pounce, Mangle, Rake, Tiger's Fury, Shred, Rip generally. Okay so now you've got Pounce, Rake and an empowered Rip ticking for some pretty nasty damage on you. The feral druid is pounding on you with shred getting ready for his Maim/Ferocious Bite, then suddenly, BOOM all his hard ticking bleeds disappear! You know why?

Because you're playing a dwarf! Now if you're lucky, the feral druid might not even realise that all his bleeds on you have disappeared for just enough time that he uses a different finisher. Furthermore, you'll only be taking on a normal unempowered Rip when he does realise!

Rip isn't very useful agfainst trash mobs like someone mentioned above. To get a descent 3-4 combo points the mob has ~maybe~ 10% health left rendering the DoT useless.

Wow, you people obviously don't know how useful rip is. When a feral gets higher leveled and gets mangle it increases damage of all bleeding effects by 30% Use mangle toget 5th cp and then rip. Target will take heavy damage. Rip is a dot, bleed damage so it ignores armor ppl! use it on a warrior, pally, or a rougue. Unless they have luffa they can't remove this. If u attack ar ougue in kitty there's little chance you'll win unless u get off a rip and go into bear. Then bear, with 1.5 times their hp and 3 times their armor can easily take the rougue down. Lets say your fighting in pve and ur fighting an elite, heck rip is gonna be useful, a FB dmg amount can't kill them and rip does more dmg than FB but over time. So use rip on a mob when u know they won't die from it because it will end up doin more than FB, if low hp always use FB tho.

Claw/Mangle/Shred/etc - They add combo points to the target, in addition to dealing their normal damage. If you have Primal Fury (Feral talent tree), you'll get 2 points when you crit w/ a skill which adds a combo point.

Combo points stack up to 5.

If you Pounce >> Shred >> Shred >> Claw ((Mangle)), you'll have 4 combo points - 5, if one of them crit. See? Easy.

Now, you can use Ferocious Bite (kinda like Eviscerate), and deal damage based on your AP, number of combo points (#CP), and remaining energy.
You can use Maim, a stun whose duration is determined by the #CP you have on the target.
You can Rip, which combined with Mangle (and even Rake, if you like) can put out some great damage. Just remember, Mangle doesn't only increase bleed effects, but Shred damage as well.
