Hmm, I accepted the quest. Talked to Erunak and experienced the cut scene. Then I was the only one alive in the Abyssal Breach aboard the submarine. Everything was dead. Not sure what is supposed to happen, but I was unable to complete the quest as of Sept 10, 2010.

It's doable as of September 12, but sometimes you have to abandon and repeat it once when you appear outside the submarine in the abyssal breach.

Been trying for a while now, think I'm up to 10 tries, and it's still not cooperating all that well.

I'm getting the distinct impression it's related to the fact a lot of people are doing it at the moment. Maybe it's just my imagination but I noticed the NPCs starting to bug out and clip away through the submarine (bugging the quest out) the moment someone else pops into the ship.

Again, could just be me, but, well...

If you manage to hand the quest into Legionnaire Nazgrim you get left stood alone on the edge of the rift.

You may miss the NPC talking...

Legionnaire Nazgrim says: I'm going in after Erunak, and if you're half the undead you say you are you'll come too!

If you jump into the whirlpool after him, you end up in the Abyssal Maw at the entrance to the "Throne of the Tides" instance (80-83). Don't go swimming... you'll die.

There is an NPC (Wavespeaker Valoren) near the instance entrance who you can speak to in order to get transported back to Vashj'ir.

I'm having what appears to be an entirely new problem. Every time I attempt this quest, I board the sub and see the cutscenes properly, but after the second cutscene (where the naga zap the sub with lightning), the game goes to the loading screen and immediately crashes with an "Out of bounds" error.

Anyone else able to complete this quest after today? I've disabled all addons, etc.

This quest is currently partly bugged, but if you sit in the submarine for long enough it will eventually finish and get to the cutscene. So just be patient.

OK here is what to do as of Tuesday, 7th December:

If the NPC / Quest hand in person dissapears after the cut scenes etc are over then fly/run back to the boat that took you there and swim under it. This makes the boat dissapear.

Then fly back to where the quest giver is supposed to be and he will now be there.

I wouldn't say this quest is partly bugged. I'd say it's full-on bugged, because I've been stuck on this stupid submarine for 10+ minutes (water breathing from a shaman who left unfortunately wore off) and have drowned for a second time in attempting.

after like 20 attempts, i am not really sure i stopped counting, i have tried everything listed above. I even checked the comments on the horde version of the quest, and they are having the same problems. i have tried logging out, turning off addons, exiting the game, hitting the reset instance button, abandoning the quest(which ports you back to Erunak if you do it in the sub). the thing i noticed is that if i abandon the quest and restart it as quickly as i can i always seem to enter at a different part of the dialog. I don't know if this means anything but i will keep trying good luck and if you can get it to work please let me know how you did it. thank you

When I did this quest the ending cut scene didn't complete and the turn-in NPC never appeared.

After exiting the game, logging back in and sitting there for a minute the cutscene played again from a point near the end and it completed this time and I was able to turn in the quest and get that achievement.

After the cinematic dive into the abyss then use the npc to teleport out and Captain Taylor will be there.

Can't find this NPC to take the quest. I'm at 82 and I haven't quests in Abyssal Depths.
Where I can find him to take the quest or what chain I should complete to see him?
At the place, marked on the map, I see nobody - only that big "mushroom" without enter.

Still horribly bugged. The first time I started it I totally panicked...breath bar, drowning, no NPC's... My boyfriend suggested I put on my fishing pole w/ underwater breathing. (Good idea). Now every time I start it the NPC's disappear immediately and nothing else happens. ><

I completed it successfully. I ran into trouble when it came time to turn it in, because Taylor didn't seem to be around, but after a few minutes and moving around a bit he finally phased in.

To start the event, talk to quest giver, you will be teleport in the submarine. Wait an eternity and you will see another cinematic (submarine crash). After, looks for Erunak and follow him (kill some nagas to pass time). Another cinematic and the quest is completed

A detailed summary:
Currently when accepting the quest "Defending the Rift", the submarine cinematic plays like normal. You spawn on the boat and there's some minor dialogue. After Crewmember Veyrne(?) says "Sorry I asked...", all the NPCs proceed to despawn and the submarine encircles the Abyssal Breach infinitively, meanwhile you have a breathing meter and will drown after a period of time.

It seems that there's no known way to fix this so I guess we have to wait for Blizzard to fix this. You can meet other players on the submarine too, and they will experience the same glitch. What a shame.

THIS WORKED FOR ME!
This quest is very buggy! My theory is the more people attempting to do it a the same time glitches it. After many failed attempts, I came back very early in the morning and was able to get to the final stage.
After the various cinematics and battle sequences I was left standing on the abyssal shelf ready to turn my quest in to Captain Taylor.
Alas no Taylor in sight, just a tantalizing bright yellow quest marker on my mini map, I'm obviously glitched in the wrong phase.
In an attempt solve this, I mounted my seahorse and swam all the way up to the ocean surface, then swam all the way back down to where Taylor should be standing, and THERE HE WAS with a question mark over his head. Not sure if was the elapsed time or the actual swimming all the way to the surface that put me in the right phase.

Don't give up on this quest, the event is epic.
My tips
1. Try doing it during off peak game times.
2. If you end up on the sub without NPCs, you are glitched. Abandon and start over. Taylor and other NPCs should be on the sub with you.
3. Abandoning the quest at any time seems to port you back to the starting point so don't be afraid to do so if things get hinky.
4. Turn you're video settings a HIGH as your box can possibly tolerable or else you will miss alot of the action. I turned mine up way past my usual, was chugging along at 18fps but got to see so much more of the battle. gl

This quest didnt work for me at first and I got the despawned npcs/breathing bug. I tried hearthing and finding the boat on foot, but that didnt work. I also tried using a Greater Elixir of Waterbreathing to no avail. I said screw it and went to bed.

I was standing inside the vessel and was killed when nothing was around. Now my body is zooming around on the ship in circles around the rift. So I've sat in the same spot waiting for the boat to come around for me to res but it says "Out of Range" when I do. :l

Gotta take the res sickness.... Got to hate these glitches.

Remember to speak with Erunak Stonespeaker. It's the NPC who gives you the quest, and will initiate the phasing. Might not have been all that obvious if you didnt read the quest text...

Completed this with no issues. Surprise ending. Wondering if this is the final quest in Vashj'ir.
Be sure to talk to the quest giver again to start it. Ignore the quest arrow, because it only shows where this part of the quest ends.

I can't seem to find any other quests here after this quest. I was worried that it might be bugged, but it worked perfectly fine for me. Skywall realm.

I tried going in the rift to see if I could find the few dungeon quests, but there was nothing. :(

I've done 136/160 quests in Vashj'ir.

Did this quest today, or better said tried to. I had the achievement for the 160 quests in Vahj'ir already before and some quests more, So I guess it might be a phasing issue which happens. When I got on the boat, the NSC's were there. But suddenly, after other players appearing on the boat, the nsc's disappeared. Pretty annoying issue. I guess as long as several people try to finish this quest, it's bugged. Best hint seems to be to wait till no one is there to complete it.

I was not able to complete the quest with any of the suggestions above.

I did complete the quest by doing the following.
1. Take the Quest from the NPC
2. Port to the boat as normal, after about 5-10 seconds the NPCs phased out. I had just tried porting out, so I then waitedfor the hearth to refresh. (I had about 20 minutes left)
3. Wait for NPCs to reappear. (For me this was slightly less then 20 minutes.

After the NPCs reappeared they went through the dialog and I was able to complete the quest. There are 3 cinematics after the second you are ported to the surface to watch the fight.

I didnt engage any of the Naga NPCs, after a short time Erunak casts a spell and the Nagas die, and you move on to the next phase.

I don't know what I did right or if Blizzard has fixed the issues mentioned previously. I just completed the quest and received the achievement perfectly and without any problems whatsoever. I'm assuming the issues that people have had are due to the overwhelming game population trying to complete this quest all at once. Also, I attacked nothing during the battle, just in case.
I wish everyone else the best of luck with this.

Still bugged as of 12/13. I tried it when the server was really empty, 6:30AM. When I zoned in there was one afk person on the boat, so I don't know if that screwed it up.

This was the last quest in Vashj'ir for me #161 or 162. At first after sitting on an empty sub for several minutes, I too thought the quest was bugged and was looking for info on Thottbot when I noticed the crew had reappeared in the background. So I am not sure if it is actually bugged, or if Blizz actually intended it to work this way. But I was able to complete it by just staying on the boat and waiting until the battle finally began.

THIS IS WHAT WORKED FOR ME<<<
<<<<but it it took about 7-10 minutes to complete. I'm not sure if this is the way it is intended to work but here's what happened for me.....

After I accepted the quest, I spoke to Erunak again and was ported to the submarine and a cut scene began. After the sub was underway the sub fell under attack and the crew disappeared. At this point, I lost the underwater breathing buff (I am a lock so I just rebuffed myself with unending breath) but if not, I would have needed an underwater breathing potion to survive. I stayed on the boat for several minutes and then the crew reappeared and the sub just kept circling the depths. After another minute or so another loooonnnnggg battle cut scene started. When it ended the crew and I were ported outside and immediately we were immediately attacked by Elite nagas. I stayed close to Erunak who after a minute or so of fighting, blasted all of the NPC mobs and killed them, then we moved on to the next wave of NPC's. I think we did this 3 or 4 times.The elites will attack you but don't panic, Eranuk will kill them. Finally after the last naga were killed, the NPC appears on the ledge and you can turn in the quest to get the Achievement. Also you will be right above the whirlpool above the Throne of Tides and can swim down inside and "find" the instance entrance. Speak to the NPC outside the portal and she will port you back to Vashj'ir.

It finally worked for me just now (Dec 14, 2am ET). Note: at the very beginning, the NPCs on the sub disappeared for about 10 sec, but I waited it out. They came back, and the long, slow story continued without a problem after that.

To prevent yourself from drowning when/if this bugs, simply abandon the quest. This will teleport you back to the questgiver. I had to reaccept the quest a few times in order to finally get it to not bug, but it seems if you keep retaking the quest, eventually you'll be able to finish it. :)

To complete this quest, speak to the questgiver in darkbreak cove(alliance) to start the cutscene and you'll be able to move for a while in the submarine, nothing special here just wait till the next cutscene.
Then you appear outside of the submarine, on the seabottem, with the submarine about to blow, they'll tell you to swim, so follow the quest giver...the guy in the dress...its red....
every once in a while an elite naga will appear, u do about 50k dmg, and the quest giver helps you kill it.
after a while of swimming you'll reach the rim of the abyssal breach.
there 1 more naga will appear to fight you, during that a cutscene will appear and neptulon will be defeated.
after the cutscene, you can complte the quest by talking to the guy in front of you.

P.S: to discover the instance: The Throne of Tides, follow the questgiver down the circular water tube(ish thingy). then there you are new instance found.
Also the lady on the left of the instance(you'r old questgiver) will bring you back up to the seabottom(you'r own dimension) by talking to her.

Still bugged for me and several others on my realm. Submitted a ticket and got an in game mail saying they're "aware of this issue and working on a fix" (classic Blizzard response for We don't know.) Funny thing is is day before I tried doing this on my main (had to move on because of the Battlemaiden line being bugged) I was able to complete it on my Paladin alt.

i got no cinematic...i rode my sea horse to the location and nothing was there...i floated to the top...nothing was there....i went back down to the bottom and saw a vortex/rift/swirl of water at the bottom so i decided to float into it....it swirled me around and ported me to an area with an instance for a different sea zone so i went into the instance and got disconnected and every time i try and log in the game i keep getting dc'd....put ticket in

Quests is working just fine on Zangarmarsh Server. After telling Erunak I was ready, I ended up on the submarine. For about 3 mins of being on the submarine (clicking the remote view things on both sides...not sure if this was required) the NPC's put the sub down and a Cinematic came up with the Medusa/Naga lady talking trash. All I did was stay with the group (Nazgrim/Erunak and the fan boy club and made sure to put dot's on the elite naga just incase it was required to finish the quest....don't worry Erunak will kill them long before they kill you. So I stayed with the group and eventually we ended up at the end of the cliff at the bottom (69.8, 34.3) (quest should then be complete) and a tentacle comes out and grabs poor Erunak :( and takes him into the vortex/rift/swirly water thingy and Nazgrim says follow so I did and ended up at the portal for The Throne of Tides instance. Not that this part matters but at one point while fighting the naga an NPC says "Thrall's Balls. I'm tired of killing these Naga." So funny!

On Grizzly Hills. Spec-farking-tacularly bugged. I decided to stop keeping track at about 16 attempts.... Hydrocane equipped. abandoning, re-acquiring, ad nauseam. It's the arrive on the sub and everyone despawns/dies trick.

edit---when the NPCs despawn, there are skeletons. Don't think anyone else has mentioned that. If they despawned with no KFC leftovers, I might get hopeful, but as things are right now.... grrrrr!

I was helped by a GM today, because the event failed to start, and was recommended to do this one at night, when a bit fewer people are on-line. The problem seems to be that the event fails when to many does this one, simultaneously.

My problem was that I died inside, I could only see one other player, and I released.
There was a snowballs chance inside of an active volcano for me to get my corpse, because it was inside the sub, swirling around, periodically showing up on my map, but when clicking 'accept' it was already far away.
no use explaining more of the difficulty of retrieving corpse, just don't die and release, make sure you can gate out if the event fails.

Being ressed, I found myself outside the sub, having to make the journey back and start over again.

One trick could be to announce that you start it, and instead of asking for help, ask people NOT to do it until you're done.
But then again, I believe...

that Blizzard could set a limit on how many can do this, and not allow any more on board. That should would be a neat TRICK we all could benefit from.

Ok I dunno why everyone is saying to abandon but as soon as they disappeared for me I ran all the way up the ramp to the main door and everyone came back no problem. If anyone else can get theirs to work this way let me know please.

Ok......... after countless failed attempts here is the easiest way to complete

1) Accept the quest
2) Talk to Erunak and tell him you are ready (starts cut scene)
3) Group with everyone that enters the sub (helps if one is a lock to cast water breathing buff,
otherwise you need underwater breathing Flask otherwise you WILL die)
4) After the second cut scene, make sure you keep up with Erunak during the battle or you will die.
5) You do not have to do any dps at all.
6) has earned the achievement

If you're getting the bug where you're in the sub and all the NPCs disappear during the cutscene and you get a breath bar, before eventually restarting, just run up the ramp inside the sub to the top. And wait. The cutscene should then run all the way through and complete.

Tested this on two characters.

I accepted the quest then logged out. Logged back in again and THEN spoke to the questgiver. No one on the ship disappeared and the quest went through all the cutscenes properly. I was able to complete the quest.

It probably also helped that there was no one else in Darkbreak Cove at the time.

As of 8pm PDT, the quest is still bugged. None of the suggestions above worked for me. The minute the first explosion hit, all the npcs vanish.
Also running to the top of the boat by the door still causes you to run out of air and die.

It's just funny this quest bug has been known since Cata beta and it's still not fixed o.O.

Still bugged as of 12/23/10. The NPCs in the sub disappeared and I ended up drowning. Then I spent a good 20 minutes chasing my corpse icon on the map, thinking that it was on the sub and it was just outrunning me. I was finally able to complete it and get the achievement today :) It appears Blizz fixed it. I went in after Captain Taylor and got dropped into the pool next to Throne of Tides dungeon (The Abyssal Maw). He has two quests inside. I spoke to Wavespeaker Valoren and was transported back to the ledge where I followed Captain Taylor in. From other comments made there are no more quests in this area...I'll update if I find any.

*side note - in deepholm there are dailies unlocked once you complete the quest chains

I could not complete this quest as a warlock until I dismissed my pet. Once I dismissed my pet the dialogue inside the submarine no longer stopped and npc no longer disappeared and the quest flowed normally after that. I am betting if your a pet class and having trouble with this quest, abandon the quest, dismiss your pet and then try again.

I had one thing that worked for me - it may be a real solution or it may just be happenstance, I don't know.

I tried this roughly 20 times, each time was bugged. I tried everything from hearthing out and going back to logging and relogging, to swimming under the boat, etc. Absolutely nothing worked - as soon as the quest would start, all of the NPCs would disappear and I'd be left drowning unless I abandoned the quest.

The last thing I tried to do was to keep clicking on Captain Taylor and Eunak. Got Captain Taylor to say "Hello," "Good Day," etc.

It may have just been completely random chance that would be the time the mission would progress and no one died - I don't know. I do know that was the first and only time I was able to complete the mission (i.e. no one died, all the cut scenes played out, etc.) in roughly 20 tries.

As of Dec.27-2010, the quest seems to be working, but not without a few bugs. I tried it and as normal the NPCs bugged out after a couple seconds. But then about 20 seconds later the NPCs returned and the quest went back on track. It was smooth sailing (submarining?) from there on.

I am not sure if this is the same for everyone, but I know that many other people on the server were also reporting how it was fixed. I was told by multiple people that it was fixed and saw lots of people falling to the dungeon entrance, so I assume others arer having success.

Also forgot to mention I was on my own on the sub. I am not sure if that affects anything, but I know some people said it changed what happened.

My solution:

Swim into the whirl that ports you to the vashj'ir instances then talk to the npc down there to get ported on the surface - then you can finish the quest.

Defending the Rift

Here are somethings I have discovered.

If you climb up to the second or third level, you can jump down to one of the big side windows and you will 'fall' out of the sub. This does nothing toward completion of the quest, but hey, there it is.

If you don't fall out of the sub you will likely be stuck on the edge of the window. If that happens, trying to exit through the window will result in a disconnect from the server. Moving back to the middle of the sub will make you stay in (the sub) and regain 'sea legs'.

If you die on the sub you will rez at the spirit healer. You may have realized by now, catching back up to your body is not gonna happen. The sub moves and can't be seen due to some funky phasing issues. So take your spirit into the rift until you seen the fatigue meter. Let it run out. You'll 'die' 'again' (lol) and be returned to the healer once more. Swim back and your body is now available.

Have not had any success with any of the methods listed in previous posts.

Jan 4 day of a server restart. Started the quest, screen faded, cutscene came up, but all I hear is a recurring ping and the screen doesn't ever pan over from the corner of the cave. I couldn't bring up the menu with escape, space, click, nothing. I ended up Ctrl+Alt+Del back to desktop just to get out. Nice to know they've fixed the problems with this one! :/

So after many failed attempts yesterday with the npcs disapearing 5 secs in, i decided to logout on the submarine, before i logged out my escalated ticket popped and gm told me , that they knew about this and were currently working on a solution for this, so i logged out with the quest on the Submarine. next day it worked, not sure if it's already fixed or it might just be the logout for a long time waiting for the respawn.

NPC's kept disappearing a few seconds in. It was getting really frustrating abandoning and trying over and over. So I read what a few people did to get it to work.

The NPC's disappeared so I ran all the way to the top of the submarine and just waited. Maybe one minute later the dialogue kicked in. People are saying it works and it seemed to do the trick for me. Whether it was pure luck or not remains to be seen. I waited a few times before that right where you get zoned in at the bottom for up to 10 minutes with no luck. So go to the top of the sub and just wait. See what happens.

After successfully completing this quest (and I assume Vash'ir, considering I had the quest count achievement long ago too), you are left floating at the bottom of the ocean with no real direction on where to go or what to do.

I think once you've completed defending the rift, simply return back to your city and move on to the next zone.

I was a little surprised, as Erunak's last words are telling you that Thrall must be told of what happens, I was expecting a followup quest.

The submarine is going in a clockwise circle around the map. After the initial cinematic, the npcs despawn at about the 9 o'clock position and respawn at about 4 o'clock. For me, the dialog restarted, but not at the same point. It restarted having progressed just a little bit. All I had to do was stand there and wait until the conversation inched along to the point where it completed and went on to the next cinematic. Also, breathing was not a problem. Whenever they respawned, it filled up my air and that was plenty to last around the turn. And it did take Captain Taylor a long time to respawn. So my suggestion is stand in the sub and pay close attention to the dialog. If it is advancing, however minutely, at some point the quest will complete for you.

After the short cinematic, i find myself on the submarine with a few NPCs. After about 10 seconds the NPC's disappear, and i'm left with a Breath bar. i equip my Mastercraft Kalu'ak Fishing Pole to keep from drowning. The submarine endlessly circles the Abyssal Breech. There is no open hatch or porthole to escape through.

Dropping the quest will teleport you back to Erunak Stonespeaker (at 55.7, 72.9 in Darkbreak Cove), where you can accept the quest, and try again.

If you die while on the submarine you will have to resurrect at a Spirit Healer, as your corpse is being carried around on a phased submarine, which moves much faster than you can.

After trying a few dozen attempts, i opened a ticket. The response i get is that they're working on it:

As of January 25, this appears to be fixed. Did the cut scene, waited until it played out and we got off the sub, did the three seperate fights with the Naga on the way to the crater, at the end followed Captain Taylor into the Maw and then talked to the NPC who returned me to Vash'jir.

As of 01/26/2011 - 12:01am EST, the quest is bugged. I have tried relogging, full game restarts, abandoning and retaking quest and it is the same result; NPCs despawn and you drown.

Abandoning quest does take you back to the cave so at least there won't be a big repair bill.

Super simple quest in all honesty.
Not bugged as of 02-03-2011.
While in the sub quickly go to the top of the sub(stairs, ramp whatever) then you will come to another video. I think this unlocks the next part.
All is really after this just follow along, you wont have to kill anything and you wont die either.
As a shaman I buffed myself with underwater breathing and ran up so if you dont have potions or youre not a shaman be quick about it.

the bug I'm having is that everything goes fine until Neptulon shows up. At that point, he doesn't speak, everything moves very slowly and after a couple of minutes of nothing happening, the cinematic ends. I can see the questgiver but I cannot interact with him. After a minute, he disappears and I'm left just standing there alone. I completed this a month ago on another character with no problem but no matter what I try, this quest doesn't work. I never even see a yellow ?

Edit: I gave it a try 24 hours later and it worked. I noticed the initial cinematics were shorter and the last cinematic played through completely. I really didn't do anything but accept the quest like I had before. Perhaps it's luck and having no one else phasing at the same time..?

Completed quest with no problems. Captain Taylor was where he was supposed to be. Said he was going after Erunak and dove into the rift. Found him in the dungeon with 2 quests, however, these are dungeon quests and since I was by myself, I chose not to attempt them. But as others have asked, what is the next step? After trying everything your suggested to fix the bug in the quest, the only thing that worked for me was to go back to the cave and i clicked on the quest giver and, then immediately logged off the server and logged right back in, then i hit the ready to do the defending of the rift. I accept the quest and get into the ship and after the initial emotes, all the NPC's phase out and i'm left alone in there with the underwater bar slowly decreasing until I drown and nothing happens. I am bugged as of 2/16. Ive tried this several times today and each time I get dc-ed during the second cime. I then cannot log on to that character for several minutes and when I do finally get logged on I am dead. (One time I wasn't dead but I was down to 15% health. This char is a lock so I used unending breath and the buff was still up so I wasn't drowning. I don't know what was hurting/killing me.) I noticed that as soon as the second cine ends, it flashes to a playable mode and I have some debuff on but I don't know what. That's when I get dc-ed.

I played in Beta, and the very same stinking bug happened all the time, the only way to NOT have it bugged is to do it ALONE.

If anyone else is with you, or starts before you are finished, it bugs.

I've opened several tickets about this quest. The first two GMs told me that the quest was fixed and to try again, which I did with no luck. The third GM just told me that the quest was bugged and that I had to wait for a fix.

I experimented a couple of bugs. The first kind is during the appearance of the Tidehunter. Instead of speaking he remains silent and nothing happens during the cutscene. After a while the cutscene ends but the quest remains undone. If you remain there and wait for a couple of minutes the last part of the cutscene starts again, but it's bugged... this keeps repeating endlessly.

The second bug happens after the submarine gets destroyed by the nagas. Instead of starting the battle, the character just gets disconnected from the server. Each time this happened I had to open a ticket and ask the GM to move my character to another place, since trying to logging in with that character just kicked me out of the game.

My suggestion is just to ignore this quest until they properly fix it.

Same bug happened to me - the game crashes right after the naga attack the sub. I opened a ticket and a GM was able to log into my character and bypass the bugged point. On relogging, I was at the edge of the rift (the quest turn-in) near Captain Taylor, and got the achievement on completion.

However, I was sorry to miss out on the cutscenes :( The GM told me that the cutscenes are visible at the login page, but I can't find them. Could anyone here help me? Thanks in advance.

While I haven't been experiencing any of the harsher(more detrimental) bugs, this is still not fixed as of 02/20/11. I was able to get to the point Captain Taylor yells "Die Worm!" at which point everything pauses for a few moments and then starts again with the cut scene of the Naga welcoming committee.

A ticket submitted got me a quick and generic reply stating it's been added to the list and is being worked on.

Hopefully this will be fixed soon. I'll update if/when I'm able to complete this quest.

Edit: 2/24/11 Was finally able to finish this quest after abandoning it and trying again at 3am pst, So it might be worth it to try doing this during Way off peak hours when there's hardly anyone on.

I had the same problem and got a generic reply to my first ticket. I requested more help and the GM finished the quest for me within a few minutes.
So keep insisting (in a polite way) on a GM to fix it for you, they can and will. The only downside is that you will miss out on the whole action.
But since this bug exists since Cataclysm release and the last patch didn't fix it either, I wouldn't get my hopes up on this working as intended any time soon.

hey this is how it glitched for me.
First off no big issues in sub or anything, we land we fight through to the edge no problems... then the cutscene happened where big elemental man shows up. it kinda went funny i dont know what happened... it held the scene. then booted me from the cutscene... the shaman guy and the angry dude where there but i couldent talk to them. and when i followed the arrow to see what to do i saw a clone of myself die......

ok so i was like ok w/e so i swam then flew to the roof of the world and came back and there were people there so i killed some nagas and nothing happened still. so i hearthed back to the cave where you pickup the quest and tried to grab it again. NOW all i get is a picture of the beach and a pinging sound.

This quest is seriously bugged. I am not having problems with the NPCs disappearing. Instead, I get booted from the server right after the cutscene in which the naga attack the sub. I have tried this many times, and it always disconnects me at this point. I then cannot log the character back in for about 6 minutes, presumably while the "battle" is going on. I can log in with other characters. Half the time I am dead when I finally manage to log the questing character in again. I know the quest can work, I did it right after Cataclysm came out on a different character. Whatever they may have done to fix the disappearing NPC bug seems to have made things much worse. I submitted a GM ticket, and was told that Blizzard knows about the problem but there is no fix for it at present. Since I am tired of paying for the repairs, I am not going to try this quest again until Blizzard says it has been fixed.

I was finnaly able to complete the quest last night. I also kept going LD after the Naga attack scene and when finnaly able to log back in either dead or in the Abyss with dead critters everywhere. One of the things that happened though last night I went link dead at the start of the mission when the submarine was at the start, I was able to log back in to the point when in the sub and the gnomes were attacking everything. Was able to complete the quest finnaly. Not sure if this helps or not.

With the recent patches it appears to not be bugged any longer.. I gave up on this one a few weeks ago with the frequent dc's and tried all the above ideas to no avail.. just got it today with no issues (85 demo lock and used unending breath just in case).. I don't think you even have to fight with Taylor.. just hang around, watch.. and you get the achieve.. and while I've liked Vash.. I'm never going back. The swimming/seahorse crap was almost unendurable after a few days.

As of 3/21/2011 this quest is still bugged. I have tried every post from what I read on here and nothing has worked yet. Every time I abandon the quest I can only see the NPC's for at least 15 seconds or less. I can confirm that the Kulak Fishingpole will help with the waterbreathing and that abandoning the quest takes you back to the cave.

Blizzard should be embarrassed. It's no different with the finale in Hyjal (but at least I was able to finish that one after several attempts).

These epic final quests must have looked good on paper, but it's obvious that they don't work, and 5 months after release, it's safe to assume that Blizzard doesn't know how to fix it.

So just get rid of it and give me a long cutscene. Anything is better than following a story for 140 quests and then drowning in an empty sub over and over again while trying to see the conclusion. There's no excuse for it. Guess I'll just look at a youtube video to see how the quest is supposed to play out.

Got to this quest today on my paladin, loaded inside the sub, and after 15 seconds the npcs disappeared, and began drowning. Ran up to the sub top door to get air, the npcs never returned and had to hearthstone out. Did this twice, and still can't complete it.

What a load of crap, really showing how blizzard THINK that know how to program a game but are completely clueless. They should have left wow as it was instead of trying to modernise a dated engine and just make a new warcraft game that can cope with it.

Well I was very confused when I first tried this quest, so came to my trusted wowhead to see what was going on. I was pretty disheartened when I saw all the stuff about bugged quest as I had specifically quested all the way through Vash'jir for this single quest! I tried a couple of times myself, gave up, opened a GM ticked. 10 - 20 mins later of moaning on /g a GM whispered me and completed the quest for me. Unfortunately I didnt get the see the cool cinematic but I'm glad I got my achieve and quests for Throne of the Tides.

Quest is still bugged, but i found a easy solution to complete it without abandonding and running around like chicken.

When NPC's dissapeard, I went to the pool in the middle of the boat and I fell into the water. I got Sea Legs buff and i waited a while. After some seconds ship began to circle around and NPC began to speak.

Do nothing, just stay safely and wait for another movie sequence and you can continue without problems.

As of April 9, the quest worked for me. I talked to Erunak to enter the sub after accepting the quest. The NPC's talked for a while until I get to a cinematic showing the sub attempting to land on the crater. I wake up "recovering from near death" and just stay with the group, encountering 3 groups of naga until the honor guards appear, and the cutscene with Neptulon being suffocated or something. The camera automatically comes up behind me and I see Legionnaire Nazgrim and Erunak standing on the ledge. Erunak gets pulled down into the whirlpool by a stray tentacle, and Nazgrim jumps down into it. My instinct was to follow him... and I did. There were no new quests in the area beyong the whirlpool, just the entrance to the Throne of the Tides instance. Went back to surface by asking the NPC standing by the entrance to teleport me back to Vashj'ir. No quests beyond that as i can see.

For me, after cinematic I can see NPCs for about 5 seconds and they will say one thing, then disappear. Once Erunak said "Neptulon's revenants must not consider us enemies" then they all disappeared. Another time Taylor said "Keep moving men! I want a steady stream of shells for those guns!" then they disappeared. It seems that if you join in the middle of the speech, it crashes, but only if you catch it at the beginning it will work. I tried to wait for a solid hour to see if they would reappear and they never did.

I sat there for 30 minutes (used a water-breathing pot as soon as they disappeared) and they never re-spawned. :(

I managed to get this one today, now either they finally fixed it as of this morning's update, or it was because the server was mostly free of other players due to the restart.

As of today 5/17/2011 this quest is still bugged. Upon entering the submarine after the short cinematic the npc's still despawn and the breath indicator appears and begins decreasing until you drown.

Still bugged, definitely. Contrary to occasional reports here that it is "fixed now" it is not, in fact, fixed ... I've been starting the quest, then hitting "abandon" just before my breath meter runs out. Four times this evening, plus the time I died, plus the time I hearthed, before realizing that abandoning the quest was as good, so ... well, it's not completely unreproducible. I'm a bit surprised they haven't deployed even a reasonable workaround ...

Thought it would be worth mentioning that this is still bugged after 4.2 came out. Strange thing is, I've done this quest on a few other characters with no issue before, so I was caught off guard when I ended up in a sub all alone and a breath meter counting down. Imagine drowning in one of the few spots with air in this zone!

Anyway, there are a lot of helpful comments here that I'll try... just waiting for a server restart to complete.

I just did this with my Level 85 Warrior-Fury. I got through the entire quest without any breath problems others above complained about. No Breath Meter countdowns. I was set in middle in front of an instance, with only Wavespeaker Valon to speak with, after I got the "Complete- 20,000Leagues Under The Sea"! Now I'm going to finish "Deepholm"! Level up!

Still hit the bug here -- got on the boat, was on the bottom of it, had the breath ticker going (so much for sea legs), nothing on the boat but me... dead.

I did the quest today, without any problem. Just waited anough long on the boat, then killed few adds as they were coming and that was it. Just follow the story and don`t try to do too many things. Good luck!

I finished the quest with another char a couple of months ago. Today I tried it about 10 times but I kept drowning in the sub. A GM confirmed that the event is bugged. He helped me by porting me to the quest npc and setting the quest to "complete", so I could turn it in at least...

Did this quest today, only problem I had was not falling asleep while I waited for the cinematic on the sub to end.
No real reason for it to be so long, who needs to drive a sub in a circle?

I abandon the quest, to restart it, but now I cant find Erunak Stonespeaker.
I have went back into the sub over and over, I have also went to 42.6 37.8 with no luck. any suggestions on how to get quest restarted?

If you need to get back to the eastern kingdoms, just ride the seahorse at the cove to the voldrin's hold.

The gryphon master is on the top end of the ship.. use him to get back to the world.

Doing this quest now (4.3) and I can't finish it. I've abandoned it about 15 times now... still start drowning moments after I port in the sub. I've waited until my bar is almost empty and they never come back....

12/3/11 quest is broken for me on Firetree (PvP). I don't know what I could do any different... Tried reacquiring quest, relogging, tried waiting a couple days, waiting a few minutes, swimming back to the cove and just redoing the cinematic part all with no luck... Posted a ticket and hopefully a GM can offer some insight. :-S Terribly buggy quest. :-( Enjoyed the rest of Vashj'ir though! :-D

I had a completely different problem ... the cutscene where you circle around just never ended. After more than ten minutes I shut down and restarted. And decided to put that quest off, as none of the drops are better than what I've already got and you can get the Sinking into Vashj'ir achievement without it.

as of 1/17/2012, and captain taylor not showing up after cinematics, i was able to turn in this quest because of the guidance from omarus:

"After the various cinematics and battle sequences I was left standing on the abyssal shelf ready to turn my quest in to Captain Taylor.
Alas no Taylor in sight, just a tantalizing bright yellow quest marker on my mini map, I'm obviously glitched in the wrong phase.
In an attempt solve this, I mounted my seahorse and swam all the way up to the ocean surface, then swam all the way back down to where Taylor should be standing, and THERE HE WAS with a question mark over his head. Not sure if was the elapsed time or the actual swimming all the way to the surface that put me in the right phase."

After cinematics ended (the very end), i was wondering where to complete and came to read here all the complaints and bug reports then i alt-tabbed window to game again and the captain were there ready to complete the quest.

So it seems is matter of time, wait a little bit after cinemactics for captain and complete.

Still bugged as of 3/18/12. No npcs in sub, sat there and drown in the sub. Was unable to retrieve my corpse and had to spirit Rez. :(

Done it 10/04/12 and everything worked fine. Just had to wait a few minutes to wait for Captain Taylor to spawn to complete the quest. Haven't seen any bugs.

This is still bugged as of April 15th 2012. Does anyone think that Blizzard is even trying to fix this? Am stuck in the sub, drowning... all the NPCs are gone. :o( I am all alone down here... the creaks and groans are getting louder, I think I see a crack starting in one of the windows... what an ignominious way to die.

Just completed this quest. The sub worked fine, but I got bugged when Lady Naz came and destroyed the sub. The cutscene never ended and we just kept circling the rift. Force exitting wow and talking to Erunak fixed the issue.

After the first cinematic, the sub was empty for me and my breath gauge appeared, slowly running out. It was like a horror movie where I couldn't escape and died a slow agonizing death.

I would like to confirm that for me the alt-tab(Command M for mac) actually did work. I went to windowed mode and then back to full screen and I watched the Captain appear before my guy.

As of 06/15/2012 the quest is working. Unfortunatelly, after all the blah blah blah and cgs, you really gotta give the game about 5 minutes... I walked around, teleported out / in, did the questline again, and nothing, no nps to turn quest...
So I waited for a few minutes, and went to get a cup of water, and when I came back, the npc was there, Captain finally accepted my quest and my achievement pop on my screen :)

It seems this quest is STILL bugged. I've done it on at least 3 other characters without isse (Way after Cata release mind you) Try it on my death knight at 8:31 Server on Whisperwind and *poof* NPC's were gone. After a few seconds of cursing Blizzard they re-appeared and continues the dialog... Disappeared again... Rinse repeat. Eventually it did finish but it took a while. So for anyone who has this issue try waiting a bit and maybe it'll work out.

It is still bugged. My DK accepted the quest, then on board the npc's disappeared and he began to drown. No dialog, no anything except the view of the sea. He eventually drowned inside the ship. I tried to swim back to my body to save some $$ from rez sickness, but it was impossible to get to my body. I had to go back to the graveyard to rez.. 30 gold for repairs...grr! I dropped the quest. I will submit a ticket, even though I'm pretty sure it will just be a waste of time.

Update: the second time I tried, it did the same thing. this time I tried exiting the game and logging back in, but it didn't help. My DK was still drowning inside the ship. I waited a while, then ended up using my hearth stone to avoid dieing again.

Started the quest, got the
00:15 Captain Taylor yells: Keep moving, men! I want a steady stream of shells for these guns!
00:22 Stormwind Soldier says: Aye, sir!

Then everyone vanished. Stuck on a ship I can't get out of with nothing to do ... and then? I'm apparently swimming with no air ... while I'm standing in the sub! Can't breathe. Can't change in to Aquatic form (because I'm not swimming). = Dead.

Try to get my spirit back to my corpse, and it's in a moving ship that the map only updates every 30 seconds or so. Even when it says I can resurrect I get I'm not close enough.

So I finally figure, sit and wait where the sub should return around to then resurrect?

Nope. Can't even see the ship.

I had to abandon and pick up this quest DOZENS of times over the course of a few hours before it worked. Like with other folks, after appearing on the sub the NPCs vanished within a few seconds. When you appear on the sub after the first cinematic you should be given the Anticipation of War buff. If you dont have that buff you should just abandon the quest and pick it up again. If you really want this achievement you are going to need a lot of patience. Or you might get lucky and it will work the first time. If it works all you need to do is watch and follow the Earthen Ring shaman in between cinematics. After the quest is done follow the captain into the rift and enter an instance. There will be a couple of dungeon quests he offers. Leave the instance and speak to the Draenei Earthen Ring NPC there to get out. Others have opened a ticket after trying this quest and a GM has given them the achievement. So as far as I can tell those are the options. Patience or open a ticket. Only my stubbornness kept me from opening a ticket but it paid off.

For those people saying its bugged. It is truely bugged, but i found that if you just wait where Captain Taylor is supposed to be on your map he respawns in that position after like 5 minutes.

If the quest bugs for you just send in a ticket and watch the cutscene on youtube. Blizzard seems to respond quick to quest bugs. Mine took me till just after the end of the cutscene. Good Luck
