Someone mentioned on MMO-champion that the legendary questline did not require hard mode objectives, however they overlooked each boss encounter quest. Each of them require an ability to be absorbed and used against said boss and there is no limit to the number of people that could be making shadowmourne at any one time.
The abilities are probably only available on some level of hard mode like deafening roar was only on yogg+0-3.

If the abilities ARE only hard mode then I'm sure the axe will be +1 tier from hard mode, if they are available on normal mode then the axe would likely be +1 tier from normal mode. (With some crazy debuff that makes all fights much easier)

Item - Shadowmourne Legendary - Your weapon swings have a chance to drain a Soul Fragment from their victims. When you have acquired 10 Soul Fragments you wil unleash the Souls of the Damned, dealing 6840 to 7560 shadow damage split between all enemies within 8 yards.
Soul Fragment - Gained a Soul Fragment. When 10 Soul Fragments are accumulated, they will release, triggering the Souls of the Damned.
Souls of the Damned - Deals 6840 to 7560 Shadow damage, split between all enemies within 8 yards of the impact crater.

....... now now. Weve had enough of the misinformed theroy that frostmourne would corupt you if you equiped it. Time for a refresher course.

When Arthas Menathal took up Frostmourne it was originally as a gambit for the power he needed to destroy mal'ganis. During the final confrontation with mal'ganis in the first story arc of WC3 mal'ganis makes a comment to arthas implying direct comunication and powers over Frostmourne through the being known as Ner'zhul. After mal'ganis' death Arthas roamed the lands of Northrend while the powers of Ner'zhul began to corupt and control him.

This is where the misconception that the blade itself is what corupts you. This is of course wrong.

After the events of the first arc of WC3 through the events of WC3:TFT we gain a back story into what happens. These facts arent teribly important. What happens next is. When Arthas defeats Ilidan at the foot of the frozen throne, he ascends to the actual throne part. When he gets there he puts the helm of the lich king on. The Frozen block that contained the armor is also the container for the soul of Ner'zhul, as placed so by Kill'Jaedan before the events of WC3. From there Ner'zhul began manipulating his new powers, corupting the nerbuians, etc... Anyway the container for the soul of Ner'zhul at this point was the helm. At this point though, Arthas and Ner'zhul FUSE into the same being completely. Thus when you kill Arthas, the being known as Ner'zhul will also die. Since logically The Lich King wouldnt just hand over his sword the only way to obtain Frostmourne would be to kill him.That would leave Frostmourne as simply an extremely powerfull rune blade. This takes us back to the area where people are qqing about Frostmourne being unequipable due to the fact it would corupt you. Ner'zhul is the only reason that Frostmourne corupted Arthas into being the Lich Kings pawn till the fusing. Quoting from the WotLK installer "Entering Icecrown Citadel, Arthas merged with the Lich King, their spirits and powers becoming one. The new Lich King ascended the Frozen Throne." Without Ner'zhul there wont be any side effects of equiping Frostmourne except for the ocasional malicious urge to stomp on a gnome here and there...

Of course this is all simple theorycrafting following the base of WC lore simply because of the fact that as of this point there are no plans to involve Frostmourne in the game at all minus the shard needed for the crafting of Shadowmourne. But please stop being dumb and qqing about Frostmourne being this evil coruptive force that allows a now non-existant force to control you...

*Please don't downrate or make degrading comments if you dont even read them... i clearly brought up in the post that Ner'zhul tried to control the nerubians before the events of WC3... He didnt wipe them out, he targeted key members of their hierarchy (i.e. Anub'arak) and took control of them... I apreciate oposite viewpoints, but please try to retain inteligent arguements. This is all a theorycrafting post as stated so diferant views are welcome, but please try to limit them to inteligent posts.

Onto the view point, yes as a matter of fact Ner'zhul is what took Arthas' soul. Play through all of WC3 and it clearly gives information suporting my arguement at the end of the first storyline. Arthas was driven insane and controlled by Ner'zhul from the point he killed Mal'ganis to the point he put on the helm of the Lich King. He hadnt had his "soul stollen" at all. He was just controlled by him till he donned the helm and their souls FUSED. Arthas never had his soul stolen. Also the Legion is trying to destroy Ner'zhul. Thus the whole interaction with Ilidan and Arthas at the foot of the throne, and the scenes where KJ is ordering Ilidan around. If Frostmourne were controled by the legion and Frostmourne is what was controling Arthas he would have just destroyed the Frozen Throne and there would be no Lich King

The term "Hunter Weapon" is given to almost any weapon that is of legendary or higher quality and does not have a class restriction

damn i am ^&*!ed off that blizz dosn't just lift the class restrictions on legendary weapons, i mean, everyone wants one of the twin blades of azzinoth but only rogues and warriors can use it. same with Sulfuras, Hand of Ragnaros, and Thunderfury. Im not saying lift the restrictions on ALL weapons, but EVERYONE is gonna want either frostmourne or shadowmourne at least to wield and show it off, so why cant blizz lift the restrictions on this crap so people actually have something to show for it rather then just one achivement and an old axe thats collecting dust in a toons bank.

Well ye, the Shadowmourne will only be useabble by Warrior, Paladins and DKs, so hunters can't wield them. Your problem is not a problem but just something impossible.
Hunters will never wield the Shadowmourne i think, and there probably wil be a ranged weapon for hunters only.

As i recall, i will look it up later. Ragnaros was banished back to the elemental plane when we defeated him. Also as usual, he was not at his full power in our plane.
It would make perfect sense to have to fight him twice in this case as the barriers between the elemental plane and ours will be broken.

You named 7 legendaries. Your first one, I simply laughed at. It was never even in the game, so it's completely moot.

So let's look at the 6 that actually existed.

2 legendaries for caster classs (of which there are 6 potential classes). One of which could only be used by 4 (mage/druid/priest/shaman) and the other clearly only intended for 4(the healers, paladin/priest/shaman/druid). Warlocks weren't able to use either of them.

3 legendaries intended for melee(of which there were 5 potential classes). The first would only have a benefit to warriors/paladin/shaman. The second was mostly considered a tanking weapon, though was obviously of use to melee dps for a time as well (overlooking the fact there were even PvP weapons out at the time that had higher DPS). The third was for only 2 of those 5 melee classes. DK's weren't counted in the potential classes above because they've only been around for 1/3rd of the game, and weren't present for any of these anyway.

1 legendary for...hunters. Technically 2 other classes could use it, but hunters could technically use one of the above intended for melee also. I noted that you decided to mention rogues/warriors could use this bow, but neglected to mention hunters could use T.Fury (even when it had class restrictions). Realistically, no raid in their right mind would have given a melee Stars' Fury over a hunter, just as none would have given a hunter T.Fury over melee.

Adding weapons that never existed in game to your list, or selectively mentioning other classes being able to use a "hunter" weapon and not mentioning hunters being able to use others, doesn't change the fact that hunters are the only class to have a legendary designed/intended specifically for them. No other class uses bows as their primary weapon. Warlocks are the only class to never have a legendary available to any spec. Caster's would still need 4 more legendaries to bring their ratio to 1:1 like the hunters, and even with this axe the melee would still need 2 more.

To wrap your head around the concept of what Arthas/Lich King has become, he is now a gestalt entity - a blend of the souls and personalities that has been absorbed by the blade Frostmourne. It's been speculated in lore that when the blade absorbed Arthas into itself, he was given the choice to join (retaining some semblence of his own soul and consciousness) and be united with the Lich King to become the new Lich King (one with a physical body).

If you're interesed in the literary inspiration for this plot concept, I eagerly invite you to look into the stories of Elric of Melnibone (by Michael Moor*!@#). He is a prince who himself is a weed, but when wielding his legendary sword, becomes superhuman. The blade Stormbringer also has a will of its own and is stated to be a vampiric demon which feeds off the souls of its vanquished. In some circumstances, Elric has been led to create slaughter when the blade has felt 'hungry'.

I'm not saying that one story necessarily has to follow the other. Only that this was the inspiration for the Arthas/Lich King story arc. True to Blizzard form, they take just enough to be regarded as parody or inspiration, without copyright infrigement - as guaranteed in the rights to freedom of speech. c.f. The Zerg and Paul Verhoven's vision of the bugs in Starship Troopers. Or the ED209 from Robocop and the 'Goliath' mechanized armor in Starcraft.

The long green posts above make for an interesting read, but I have to agree with the first one by amagais2. You can quote the books, comics, and even blue posts and Blizzcon statements all you want, but the fact of the matter is that not a single one of these things is considered canon. Until Blizzard puts the lore into one of the games, it's only someone's opinion - even if that opinion appears to be endorsed by Blizzard.

So basically, at this point, the four games (WarCraft 1-3, World of WarCraft) and their various expansions are the only "official" source. Even the events of WarCraft Adventures: Lord of the Clans doesn't count since it was never officially released. The aspects of that story added to the other games (such as the "Escape From Durnholde Keep" event in Caverns of Time) counts as canonical lore, but nothing else from the story does.

So, excluding whatever happened in books, comics, or other non-canonical sources, it is the soul of Ner'zhul the Lich King who corrupted Arthas while using Frostmourne as a conduit. The blade itself has no sentience but obviously has some lasting effect on those who wield it.

Of course, many will disagree with this post, but I am a serious lore geek and felt I had to put my two cents in on the matter.

as i have been playing wow for a while i do notice that they did recently put in a couple legendary weapons
from classic we have
1.Sulfuras, Hand of Ragnaros
2.Atiesh, Greatstaff of the Guardian
3.Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker
4.Ashbringer (unobtainable)

in BC we have got
1.Warglaive of Azzinoth x2
2.Thori'dal, the Stars' Fury

and last but not least WotLK
1.Shadowmourne
2.Val'anyr, Hammer of Ancient Kings

and also a few to mention such as:
1.Infinity Blade
2.Cosmic Infuser
3.Warp Slicer
4.Phaseshift Bulwark
5.Staff of Disintegration
6.Devastation
7.Netherstrand Longbow
8.Andonisus, Reaper of Souls
(all of these items are only obtainable from Tempest Keep except for weapon no.8)

how ever the last 8 items i listed are all conjured legendary gear which meant that
those items cannot be removed from the instance that they were obtained from except for
.Andonisus, Reaper of Souls which can last outside of the instance for a limited duration before vanishing

when the strengs chance is comming 1=40 strengs and this buff also triggers a visual effect on your char more stacks result in more strengs this visual effect will eventally become even more impressive when you get enouht stacks. you will eventually become 10 stacks and your weapon swings will trigger chaos bane if you want to see a vidio whits this legendary weapon go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcYUVVuMkaI :)

I am so tired of seeing this statement. Yes, casters got Atiesh... All 5 of them who actually cleared all content before it became the watered-down mess that we have today. Practically no one obtained Atiesh prior to TBC, it doesn't count imo. Even Blizzard admitted they released Naxxramas (and subsequently, Atiesh) way too late. That is why they subsequently re-released Naxxramas in WoTLK so that people could actually get to see the content that it had.

Also, to say that casters were offered a legendary in Atiesh is correct, but this was not a DPS caster legendary exclusively - there were healing versions, so DPS casters had to compete with healers for this... And when they released the first caster legendary of WoTLK, that was set to be healing only. DPS casters have not yet had a legendary just for them, other DPS classes and healers have had there shot so far. Atiesh is the only case of a legendary, to my knowledge, where opposing classes had to fight over the same legendary.

Atiesh - Healing / Caster DPS
Thunderfury - Tanking
Sulfuras - Melee DPS
Warglaives of Azzinoth - Melee DPS
Thori'dal - Ranged DPS
Val'anyr - Healing

I just hope the next caster legendary, should they ever release one, is DPS-only - since they chose to make Val'anyr a healing-only mace (due to proc).

Finally got mine last night after 4 weeks of horrid shard drop rates. Only one out of four HM boss in the past four weeks dropped a shard. Guess that's what I get for being a casual. LOL.
