Commander Ulthok is the second boss in Throne of the Tides. You will encounter him apon leaving the room of the first boss. He will begin casting Dark Fissure. When he finishes he will slam the ground dealing a ton of damage (one shotting anyone who is not a tank), and leaving a void zone. He will also randomly pull in one member and deal damage to him. 80% of the time he will cast dark fissure right after releasing the person. Tank him, stay out of void zones, and you win.

According to the commentary of a playthrough of Throne of Tides, Dark Fissure hits for about 45,000~ shadow damage and leaves behind a fissure as mentioned above, which deals around 8,000~ damage per second.

Just did him. The tank kept kiting him around the middle so people coming out of the squeeze landed out of a fissure.

tank this boss near the walls, and keep moving near the walls all the way around (as he keeps spreading those black voids). much easier to avoid the black void on the ground if you constantly have the center for emergencys..

consider the strangle he does, a stun that cant be removed. since he throws you back to where you stood when he grabbed you (as far as i noticed)

killed him on first try with my "virgin" tank friend as well

You can pull him to and kite him in Lady Naz'jar's room; making it a very easy fight.

My friends liken the animation to his squeeze ability to that of the shakeweight. They're not wrong, but every time I see that ability I can't help but think of Maria from Mischief Makers saying "shake shake shake". Every time, without fail.

In Heroic mode the Dark Fissure will continue to grow much like the Blight Patches when in Phase 3 Prof. Putricide. He is pretty much a Burn fight.

A quick tip for normal, avoid getting hit by dark fissure at all, as it will one shot or nearly one shot most tanks at that level. He casts it where you were standing when the cast started, so moving about 5-8 yards away during the cast will make him miss.

On a side note, Druids can also dispel his Enrage with Soothe. I have done this on my Resto Druid in Normal ToT.

Small note, my 82 Death knight was able to "tank" him after our tank died after the 1st fissure, while in blood presence /w frost spec. It was hard on the healer, but it is doable. I just kept backing up as soon as squeeze finished. If i were in tank gear, i may have been able to survive a dark fissure, because it only did around 500 overkill to me. So as song as the healer survives and the dps can take a few hits from the boss, he may be able to be kited around the room. Its tough, but if the tank dies, there isn't much left to do except roll with it.

Confirmed, the tank can avoid the fissure, but he has to be very fast. The healer has to be ready for him to take the hit, as it is difficult to avoid.

Pulling him to the wall and move him in a slow circle around the room works, so long as your DPS is high enough.

Heroic: Easiest boss in the place. Considerably easier than most of the extremely nasty trash packs.

Tank: Pull him sideways to the wall (east or west). Once he's there, kite him back (south) then 3/4 of a circle around the room, which will get you back where you start. Make sure to leave enough space behind him and the last Fissure so that there is room for melee to get in there.

When he starts to cast Dark Fissure, the tank should turn sideways and strafe back away from it. Get out of it ASAP but stay near the wall. It can be dodged if you're quick. Nobody else should be that close in front of him.

If your DPS is low, you'll get back to the hallway to Lady Naz'jar's room. The fissures will cover most of the floor at this point, and they don't seem to disappear on heroic, so go down that hallway, instead.

Ranged damage-dealers and healers, stay in the middle of the room until you run out of space, then head out toward the hallway. Make sure you stay well in front of him so that the fissure is never an issue for you.

Yes, heal through the squeeze. If the healer gets grabbed, anyone with a heal should use it.

Yes, dispel the enrage if you can and if the healer is having mana issues. Otherwise, concentrate on doing damage, which is more important in this fight.

The curse doesn't appear to land on the tank. Dispel it if you can because of the haste debuff.

Other than that, this is a pure burn fight. Blow damage cooldowns as soon as the tank has solid aggro.

This is a pretty easy boss: just stick to the wall and move around the map in circle as he casts Dark Fissure.

I think the best "tactic" for this boss is for the tank to move along the walls and yes, keep moving, slow and steady. When he does cast dark fissure you have plenty of time to get out of the way. Well, with latency counted in, it could be harder. It only has a 2 sec casting time.

I do not have trouble tanking other bosses but this one will not stay tanked for me. I use all of my threat and he keeps facing away from me. I went in as an 85 blood DK with item level of 340 with the rest of the group all level 80-82 and had the same problem. Anyone else have the same problem tanking himir?

On this the second boss, Commander Ulthok: the tank needs to kite him over to a wall as soon as the encounter begins (so that the boss is facing the wall and the tank is backed up against it). Watch for the boss to begin casting Dark Fissure, AS SOON as the boss begins casting this the tank needs to run to the next spot somewhere farther down the wall or toward one of the four doorways; this is done in order to minimize the amount of space that dark fissure takes up on the floor (since each fissure grows in size as the encounter continues).
The main objective of melee is to also begin running away from the boss the moment he begins casting dark fissure, while every member of the party stays away from the AoE-DoT-stacking fissures on the floor.
The healer needs to watch for the player who is chosen for the bosses Squeeze ability, as that player will need to be the focus of heavy heals while this is taking place.
The rest is pretty tank-and-spank. GL

This guy can come down the jellyfish elevator if you happen to have a group that starts to wipe. I had a group where half of us died, and when we ran back in, we met the other half who had just gotten off the elevator. It went back up and when it came down again, the boss was on it and we proceeded to wipe again. Funniest thing I ever saw in this game.

Just dropped this guy in 382 gear as a Fury Warrior. Indeed, dark fissure hits like Chuck Norris on a bad day to anyone so happening to not get out of the way post haste. Even with my armor of ~24K (normally I do have a shield equipped but didn't try it for this fight), this bugger will still pound you for 10K a hit, crit for 25K+ and if you can't jump out of the way of dark fissure in time, a good 50K of your life is kissed good bye.

What I found to be barely successful (4 parries at the end with only 7K health lucky mind you), is to pop everything you got at the start and just pound him as mercilessly as you can as fast as you can. Always try to watch the cast bar as like others said, you have to have pretty much instant reaction to avoid dark fissure and one or two hits of that is almost certainly a failed attempt / wipe really really quickly / or shadowmeld and reset the fight. Just let him lumber toward you and aside from pounding away, also give him time to cast whatever is up if you're away from it.

Used 2 2H axes, one with windwalk, one with mending, a mythical healing pot, golemblood potion, and for a change (finally) frostweave bandages. You'll have to use enraged regen pretty fast - especially if DF hits you once - but unless you really can outrun this guy for awhile, you won't have time in the fight to hit it again.
