Looking at the spell effect, it causes a change model to model 35567, if you look at the model database npc 35567 is The Spirit of Kalytha a night elf NPC from Azshara used in a horde quest line.

Expect to be transformed in to her.

This will perhaps replace the ring item from this quest, Memories of the Dead, in which you 'become Kalytha and discover the truth about the destruction of the Lake Mennar Academy and what the Highborne there did to delay the Burning Legion's invasion of the ancient capital of the highborne/night elves before the great Sundering.

Purchased from a goblin vendor in Xylem's Tower (not the mountain thingy) for both factions for 5000g. Transforms you into the ghostly female night elf Kalytha, complete with her outfit. 15 minute cooldown, 30 minute duration.

Just bought this tonight and can confirm what most of the other comments say about the price, seller, and effect. I have not done any quests in Azshara and I was still able to buy it.

Here are the few things I have figured out by experimenting with it:

You can fight, cast spells, and take damage while using this illusion. So far, only death (or clicking it off yourself) seems to remove the illusion. You take on the appearance of Kalytha, but you do still get to see your weapon and shield/off-hand.

For those too lazy to look up Kalytha, she's a night elf female with a purple robe and a ghostly aura. The ghostly aura transfer to mounts as well. For example, if you use vial of the sands, your sandstone drake will be semi-transparent and have a ghostly aura. A lot like shadowform except that you don't take on a dark hue.

I tried to use the naga illusion item from archaeology and I got the message, "A more powerful spell is active." However, using a lifegiving seed removed the illusion. So be careful about using other illusions while this is active if you don't want to lose it.

So, why spend 5000g on this item? With a 30 minute duration and 15 minute cooldown, you could theoretically run around permanently as a ghostly night elf female. The only situations where you couldn't would be times where you are dying a lot (raids, pvp). Not necessarily that impressive for most people. However, if you're like me, and you like illusion items, this is probably one of the best in the game simply for the fact that it doesn't have the restrictions most other illusions in the game have. It's especially fun as a horde character since people aren't used to seeing night elves in their groups.

I'll try and keep this post updated if I find out any other uses for this item.

Like most transformation items, the effect is removed by druid shapeshifting.

This item was added the same day Faded Wizard Hat had it's effect changed, thus rendering it a bank/town item.

This item has 2 hidden debuffs. One will affect you once, the other, all the time.

Debuffs:
-5000 gold
-1 Inventory Space

If you use Super Simian Sphere followed by Kalytha's Haunted Locket you will become a very large Night Elf in a pink bubble.

Transforming into a Sandstone Drake doesn't remove the buff, in fact it makes your drake form transparant

This thing about resetting cooldown, does it really reset the cooldown for you, or is it just the tooltip?
For me it "resets" but I get 'Item is not ready yet' when I try to use it.

Fun Fact: If you are a male toon and use this item, and then use an item that transforms you into a different race of your same gender (ie Orb of the Sin'dorei, Orb of Deception, or Darkspear Pride) your transformation will be female! The only other ways I know of pulling this off are to either go to the Val'kyr daily village in Storm Peaks, or get the female gnome transformation from Pygmy Oil making this item very useful for pulling off a hilarious gender changing transformation to amuse and confuse your friends.

Edit: No idea why this is being downrated, it's a true statement. I've tested it with all three items mentioned above, and it does cause a female transformation.

Alliance can interact with the shopkeeper and can also purchase this little goldsink. *ahem* Trinket.

And again, I do not understand the downrating. This is on a neutral shopkeeper buried deep in what is now a Horde zone. It is not a logical assumption that Alliance players would have access to it.

Some awesome things i love about this item.

1.It has a cool effect.

2.The cooldown is shorter then the effect.

3.Its not something that you equipp.

4.The effect wont end if you enter combat.

Its totally worth the money!

I've come across a small bug with this item. When sometimes trying to activate it, it says "Item not ready yet" when there is no sign of the item being on cooldown.

if used after simian then mounted, you will be the night elf mounted in sphere, but if you instead remove the locket's buff while still mounted you will be a very large monkey in sphere riding your mount ^_^ see pic

Target someone using this and use Potion of Illusion seems to turn you into random npcs.
Tried this three times and I got a Twilights Hammer Looking human, a undead, and a Human Female with brewfest clothes.

Note that this has a peculiar effect on mount scale.

If you remove the buff it gives you while you are mounted, your mount will grow back to your original race's scale... and you will grow as well!

This means that you will look noticeably bigger than anyone else.

The illusion is fully Night Elf - not just the skin.
You get the salto jump, all the Night Elf /silly and other emotes.
So if you sometimes feel like playing a Nigth Elf even as Horde, this item is very handy.

Kalytha's Haunted Locket is sold by Tex Vortacoil for 5000g on the first floor
of a tower at coordinates (Azshara) 25, 37.

If you look at the map of Azshara, the tower is slightly north east of
Gallywix Pleasure Palace and when the tower is moused over it says "Bears Head".

The locket binds when picked up, has no 2 hour refund time,
and if you open up a vendor window and then mouse over the locket it says "no sell price" (update: as of patch 4.1.0a it has a sell price of 1250g).

When disguised as a night elf the base (emote) voice will be the same as a normal female night elf; however
if you have a death knight, the voice will have the same extra effect to that voice that death knights have.

If you mouse over the buff it says:
Kalytha's Haunted Locket
One Xylem's Apprentice is as good as another.

Very annoying how it's no longer usable in arena considering it wasn't in the patch notes at all. They need to add stuff like this is so I don't say go buy it after 4.1 thinking I can use it in arena and then BAM enter an arena and "This item is not usable in arena". >:(

Drinking Pygmy Oils as either gender until you turn into a gnome and then using your orb of the sin'dorei will turn you into the opposite gender blood elf. For females you can also use the Iron Boot Flask before the orb and be transformed into a male blood elf.

It's actually 4500g. I just got one, and I'm not a Goblin.

Despite the price though, it's one of the best shapeshift items there is. It doesn't need to be equipped like the hats or trinket, allowing you full stats with the shapeshift. And unlike the Nogger or Deviate, it has unlimited uses.(But you could buy like a thousand pots with 4500g anyway) Better yet, almost no one has this due to the price. Nogger and Deviates are relics that anyone can get for next to nothing. Almost no one has this thing.

I'd rate this as the second best shapeshift item in the game, being second to the boot flask.(It has unlimited usage, no equip, and free on top of it)

Kalytha's Haunted Locket + Orb of the Sin'dorei works great and if you use portal Orb of the Sin'dorei will double on you and one of them still remain 5 min. But new one transform you back to your gender.(if you remove new one trasnform to opposite gender.)

If you are transformed and use a Potion of Illusion you will keep the ghostly look...nice way of copying someone as a ghost.

I made a list of gimmick items which you can use to transform your character into a different form or race or even gender to play around with. I didn't add items like weapons that provide a procc with a transform effect that only lasts a few seconds even though I know about them. My intention was to list all items with controlable transformations. Feel free to let me know if I missed an item!

This item currently has the highly unusual property (probably a bug) of removing shapeshift effects that cannot normally be removed with a right-click. For example, gnomish engineers who teleport to Toshley's Station sometimes get the Transporter Malfunction debuff and are turned into a chicken for 3 minutes. Similarly, visiting a candy bucket during Hallow's End may result in a 45-second "tricked!" debuff. While in these forms, the player cannot take a flight point or mount up. But using this locket dispels the unwanted effect.

If you were going for a transmog that looks like this model, you cannot.

Shoulders: There are no shoulders in the game currently that match these. The grey on the Soulcloth Shoulders is gold on Kalytha's shoulders. But as of this writing, it's the closest match there is.

Robe: Apprentice's Robe is a grey item and cannot be used for transmog. There are no other robes that match the same model/color.

Hmm, was wondering before i buy this.. Im playing resto druid. if i go cat form etc, and go out again, does it remove the effect? Or will i still be the night elf when i go back to normal form?

Warning to those w/ too much gold on their hands the Locket shares a CD w/ itself.. i wasn't sure of this and since it was not unique i decided to buy another to see if it would each have its own CD and this was not the case :/

In the dungeon "Well of eternity" you get a buff/effect that turns you into a night elf. With this active you cant use certain shapeshifting items. But if you use the locket before you enter the dungeon the effect of it wont disappear when you enter, in fact if you have a male character the two buffs will "stack" causing you to become a female night elf with your regular armor visible.
