The use effect is basically a sentry totem one.
You can switch between your view and the view of the area you targeted. Seems to have a short range though.

A comparison between this and the heirloom mail, assuming you gem with 3x Delicate Inferno Ruby and enchants it with Arcanum of Ferocity:

So, all in all, I'd say this is better than the heirloom mail (specially on the looks) and lasts all the way to the Cataclysm zones. Unfortunately, however, the heirloom helmet grants +10% experience and considering the 70-89 part is Northrend, I'll definetly try to get past that as fast as I can.

Can't seem to find any useful application of this item in the least.

...how about it looks cool, and is a neat novelty item? The Horseman was dropping an old plate helm which nobody will really use (possibly a fresh alt at the time, but there are/were a few easy-to-obtain decent plate helms already available). Even though it's "useless" as you might say, it's still neat to have.

Not everything in the game is meant to be semi-mandatory and pursued for the intent of making you raid-ready.

There were some remaining Delicate Cardinal Ruby in my bank, I just put them on this item, then I used it on my hunter. With these gems it can easily outmatch any green or blue headpiece from Outland and Northrend quests or normal dungeons, until you reach lvl 80 and Vashjir/Hyjal quests. Fairly decent while levelling throughout Outland and Northrend if you don't have the heirloom headpiece.

This is kind of a weird idea, but it seems like this would be a very good helmet for an up and coming tank. I got this on my main and was trying to figure out a use for it, and then considered just gemming it up for max sta and sending it to my warrior. Here's a comparison of some helmets: Overlord's Helmet of Second Sight from a SMV quest and Dreadnaught Helmet from old Naxx (no longer obtainable). The armor is the same as the (very good) t3 helm, and this helm has more sta. It's almost as good as the one from the Gorefiend quest from a tanking perspective, and you can get it several levels earlier.

As far as stuff you can obtain around level 60, it blows them out of the water. The fact that it's mail doesn't even matter because it has high armor for the level you can use it. So, if you find one of these, it might be worth considering for more than just hunters and shaman.

Now that they lowered the required level to 61, this item has become a lot better. It's actually worth getting the Archaeology BoA rare projects now, because they have shifted from "lame, you get better stuff from quests in BC/Wrath/Cata" to "damn, this is a very, very nice piece of gear for at least 7 levels!".

This helm covers a Death Knight's eyes completely and is a good choice for those roleplayers who want to RP a DK as a non-DK or who want to RP a DK who hides his real identity.
Free bonus is that this helm is very nice for leveling, if you are not afraid of losing plate specialization bonus.

Another (probably) easily obtainable similar looking helm that covers a DK's eyes is from Zul'Farrak last boss - it didn;t drop for me in about 10 runs though. ZF is nicely soloable by a fresh Death Knight, but it takes time because you need to do the event first.

The sentry totem aspect seems to have been nerfed in that you can no longer move while the sentry bit is active--i.e. you can't set it, move about and check in periodically on the "sentry" position. You're stuck in place now, which is a bit crap imo.

tough call for a 64 plate non-eng twink. Although this is superior in most aspects to the Circle's Stalwart helm (and looks so much better!), I'm going to really have to crunch the math to see if it is worth giving up the plate specialization bonus.

Maybe just a city-wear/RP piece for me . . . but if I had a shaman or hunter in the same range, definitely a BiS!

I might be being a bit stupid here, but when you Use the helm and you see into the distance, how do you get out of it? Right clicking the buff switches views so how do you stop seeing?

Same stat as Storm Helm but only requires lvl 61 to use.

Snap in 3xDelicate Cardinal Ruby then you won't need to change helm piece until you get Cata item. Of course unless you use Tarnished Raging Berserker's Helm for the xp bonus, where faster xp gain is more economical than killing mob a little bit faster.

Save it for transmog purposes, if you like the look of it.

I use this helmet in a transmog set - a lot of mail helmets aren't that great, but the wolf-head is fairly iconic. It might not be as fancy as some of the newer tiers, but if you use it with a set that doesn't have a very detailed texture, it looks pretty good.

The use effect on this headgear (Sight Beyond Sight) has unlimited range. Unfortunately, you can only target it on a place where a "path is calculable" from your place. A calculable path are two points where a walking NPC can travel to without any hinderance. So, no spying from towers, cliffs, buildings, etc.. This means that the range is essentially limited by that factor, and by how far you set your View Distance to.

I found this out when I wanted to see Icecrown Citadel from Dalaran. Kinda sad if you wanted to be some sort of an ultra WoW sniper/spy :(
