Based on the new fishing contest description, these will be found in any pool in Northrend starting on 2pm each Saturday and lasting for an hour. Hey... that's tomorrow!

First one to catch em and get back to Dalaran to the turn in guy wins the contest and earns the newly named combined achievement for STV and NR weekly fishing contests. This is needed for the Salty title Meta.

If anyone else wandering as i did - you can catch this fish between 2 and 3 pm Saturday, even after someone won the competition. If you didnt win, you will receive the same bag of fishing treasures as you would for a normal daily.

This was just caught by a level 55 with only 75 fishing skill. It was turned in for 150 Kalu'ak rep, 9780 exp, and a Bag of Fishing Treasures. Glow Worm, Solid Gold Coin x4, Recipe: Captain Rumsey's Lager were in the bag.

I was lucky enough to be the first one to catch this during today's Fishing Derby.

This just proves that that although this event is completely based around an RNG, if you're persistent then your chance should come sooner or later. I've been fishing for this every Saturday since the event came out and the vast majority of the time would fish for 45 minutes - 1 hour and never even see the shark, today it showed up in a Nettlefish School in Sholazar at 2:04 PM.

As others have said, location and skill are not a factor. As long as the pools drop the pygmy suckerfish you should be good anywhere in Northrend. I did have 450 fishing with +40 skill from gear, but as other posters have stated above this is entirely unnecessary.

Horde versus Alliance isn't going to make a difference most of the time, but it actually could make a difference. A guy turned in the fish when I was at 9/10 seconds on my Hearth. My PC loads Dalaran pretty fast, so it would have taken me about another 10 seconds to turn it in. Had the guy been Horde, I definitely would have won. So yes, it CAN make a difference, but here's a fun fact, the Horde has won it ~50% of the time on my realm. I'd say being Horde is the least of your worries here, behind your luck and your PC. To illustrate this, here are my catches for a few weeks versus the winner's:

Kind of interesting how it worked out too. You'll notice my catches going up because I found a better location (I used Venture Bay originally, but it got invaded by a bunch of people) but I wonder why it's steadily increasing in the number the winner has caught? Oh yeah, it's called luck.

TLDR: STFU about Horde vs. Alliance bias.

EDIT: Updated my stats. Somebody found my spot in week 6, but I think they gave up on it 'cause they couldn't find the other cluster and thought that there were only like 2 pools in the area (even though there's 8-12, I've yet to fish them all before somebody wins).

EDIT2: Another update, and since people seem to be misinformed about this contest, here's some information.

The Blacktip Shark is a rare catch that replaces a Pygmy Suckerfish in your catch. Therefore, more Pygmy Suckerfish equals more chances for a Blacktip. Every type of pool in Northrend save Pool of Blood and Glassfin Minnow has an equal chance of catching a Pygmy Suckerfish per cast. I'm not really sure why it lists Grizzly Hills as a higher chance, but it's been tested and confirmed that the chance for each pool but the two I listed above is the same.

This contest can happen a minute or so earlier than your server time indicates, so be there at least 5 minutes early. Fishing skill has no impact whatsoever on your chances. One recent patch made it so your fish would never get away, but you would get junk fish. The other patch made it so fishing schools never yield junk fish, meaning you can fish in them with level 1 fishing and get the same catches my 450 fishing gets.

There's not really much else to say except that comments like "stick with it and you'll eventually get it" are very false. Luck *!@#s people all the time, just ask Roy Sullivan

EDIT3: Finally won, after 10 weeks of trying. This doesn't prove that sticking with it will make you win, it just proves that if you skip a week, you will surely win. Yep, that must be it. I took the boots, by the way. I've got 6/10 classes to 80 already and 5% isn't going to make that much of a difference anyway. I just like being able to port everywhere (Blessed Medallion of Karabor, Argent Crusader's Tabard, Direbrew's Remote, Runed Signet of the Kirin Tor, Hearthstone, and now the boots!) for convenience.

First tourney I tried, I won the competition. Keep in mind that you don't have to be fishing from a school, and your skill doesn't really matter (I had the white fishing rod, I don't even think I had the hat at that point). So just go to the pond underneath Dalaran and hope you get lucky.

Well, to make this less of a loss of time I suggest for you Chef's out there to go to Grizzly Hills and fly up and down the stream from Venture Bay to Blue Sky Logging Grounds and fish the Glacial Salmon-schools which are literally everywhere. Those go for a nice 30g per 5 Firecracker Salmon's at my server and I bet the difference ain't that high on other realms. From 30 minutes of fishing along the pools (until I got notified that the contest had been won) I got 82 of them fishies. Selling them for a profit of 480 g or so +/- AH cut's, so go for that and your time wont be completely wasted. Just a heads up. :)

While it could be pure luck, there is a deleted post here that says that there is something fishy with this tournament and that he knows someone who won two weeks in a row. In my server, the first tournament winner was the guy with the highest achivement points in the realm... isnt that a coincidence and a incredible luck? This very same guy has some very intriguing achivements earned like this one. I wonder if while its pure RNG in most cases, in some others friendship with gamemasters migth be involved.

Caught the Blacktip shark on my 2nd pool and about 8th cast. It was at Kamagua and in the net the farthest north near the icewall. It seemed as if my hearth was like a 20minute cast time lol i was so nervous. I won about 13 minutes after the event started.

I chose the ring, but now i wish i chose the boots =( putting in a ticket with a GM now.

Over the last 3 weeks, during a cumulative 3 hours of the contest, I have caught 19 stacks of Pygmy Suckerfish and 31 stacks of Glacial Salmon from pools around the Blue Sky Logging Grounds in Grizzly Hills. With buffs, my effective fishing Skill is 602, although that shouldn't matter. The Suckerfish are worthless on my server. The Salmon are 100g a stack, so it's not a bad take there.

I have yet to see a single Blacktip Shark.

I'm hoping that's just bad luck, because if it's not, that puts the drop rate at <0.3% on Pygmy Suckerfish catches.

On Onyxia server, the contest is generally over within about 10 minutes of the start.

Since no one else seems to have made mention of this fact, the shark item in your inventory has a one hour duration on it. So if you happen to have one - and would still like to turn it in, whether you'll be winning the derby or not, ensure that you do so within the hour.

You won't always catch a shark either. For 3 weeks now, I've fished the ENTIRE DURATION of the tournament (even after the winner) from Northrend Pools, and have not caught one shark. A friend of mine caught one right next to me 7 mins into the tourney, but a winner had already been announced.

RNG sucks if you ask me.

A winner recently told me it can be fished outside of pools DIRECTLY BELOW DALARAN. That means no running to the next pool just non-stop fishing. Good luck and please confirm if you get a catch there!

I learned the hard way not to be in que for the dungeon finder while fishing in the tourney. I never saw the start or saw who was the winner. Im guessing its like being in a group and looking for quest items.

Does anyone know how much competition there typically is now that maximum-level players are largely out of Dalaran? The experience bonus seems quite nice, but the ring isn't useful for all classes, and Dalaran, rather than being the center of the end-game world, is now quite out of the way with the portals gone.

Mind you, people, here's a little lesson.

Don't give up when getting this - even if you are as low as 19, you can do it!

'Cause I did, on my 19 Worgen Hunter, Mattrocks (on Shattered Hand). I fished this up twice, but only the second time helped me win the comp :D

I fished in the Frozen Sea, mind you.

So, never give up, and who knows? Perhaps you too, at a lower level, can win this competition, too :D

The Kalu'ak derby sucks. I was fishing for 1 hour, 80% of the time in pools and it didn't even drop. i.e. to actually win it with competition - most servers - you have to be a lifeless jerk.

First time getting the Blacktip Shark, in Sholazar Basin, trying at it for the past year and a half... was 4 minutes into the Fishing Contest - and I still lost when trying to turn it in. Got beaten by 2 seconds, wasted my time waiting for the fecking NPC to appear.

Don't get down on yourself about losing the event. Everyone participating has the same chance at winning. The shark is a low drop from ANY body of water in which you can catch Pygmy Suckerfish. You can just as easily win the event by liesurly fishing beneath Dalaran in the open water of the Mirror of Twilight as you can if you were fishing in the contested waters of Grizzly Hills or Sholzar Basin.

Choose a comfortable spot by Northrend's water and set your line. Don't worry about losing and don't vex yourself if you do lose. The event doesn't have much other strategy than that.

I just had a double-turn in in which we both got rewarded with the desired item and the achievement.
A horde player and me (Alliance) apparently both turned in at the exact same time, granting us both the winning value for the event. Strange, but very fortunate for me.

ok,1 hour and 42 minutes of fishing pools in Northrend and I got the shark on the first day doing it

however I was only doing pools for the guild achievement, I'd forgotten the derby completely

Duration : 1 hour
Location : Northrend
Time : Each Saturday, 14:00-15:00 server time
Objective : Catch Blacktip Shark
How to : Once the derby begins you should fish along shores, pools, rivers all over northrend fishing School of Fish.
Complete : {Map} Return to Dalaran to Elder Clearwater near daily fishing quest giver Marcia Chase.

Note : It can be caught ouside school of fish, but with a lower drop chance.

There is not always a winner !

Some usefull info :

It can be fished with any fishing skill (req. 1 skill)
It can be fished at any school of fish in northrend.
Even if you dont win you get a Bag of fishing treasures for catching the shark.

This shark doesn't exist. I've been doing this since it came out in WOTLK, always keep fishing after the tournament is over just to see if the shark will drop for me, and it never does. It's been over a year now...the shark is a lie.

BTW, I have every other fishing achieve in the game including the Booty Bay contest, which is FAR more fair.

If you like achievements, but don't really care much for fishing, and like me, have yet to catch one of the other extremely rare fish on Azeroth for the One That Didn't Get Away achievement - then I would advise you fish in Dark Herring pools in Howling Fjord. This way you have a diminishingly small chance of getting either item you are after. Make sure you have your teleport ring on your finger or your HS set to Dalaran, just on the offchance of getting the shark. It's a long flight from the Fjord.
Best thing about this event is that you only usually have to put up with about 5-10 mins of fishing each weekend, before there is a winner.

i can confirm that the shark can indeed be fished up while in a raid group. just fished one up and actually won the tournament while waiting for an onyxia 25 raid to be filled.

I don't know if it makes a difference or not but for 2 weeks I've been in a Party and on both occasions for the full duration of the hour I did not catch the Blacktip Shark. After I left the Party today I caught the Blacktip Shark after a pool and a half.

Anyone able to confirm this?

Just caught one to win the Kaluak Tournament. Caught it around Unupe using the Cartier Jeweled Fishing Pole, weather-beaten hat, a sharpened fishing hook and a couple of Rumsey lagers. It's been almost two years since I started trying this achieve. I'm at 525 fishing.

This quest is absolute bull$%^&. Ive been doing it for 6 months now every weekend and I havnt even fished up one shark. I sit there sometimes after and just try to farm it for days and never once has it showed up. And this weekend Iam fishing pools in Scholazar and some guy comes next to me and fishes like three pools, hearths, and wins it! &*!@ you Blizzard for this piece of #$%^ requirement for Salty. Ive had every other achievement for 4 months and I have everyone but this and Ol Crafty and I still cant get Salty. Honestly a crock of !@#$. /rant >=/
