These drop of 25man bosses on their "hard" modes in Uldaur. You combine 30 of them to recieve the legendary quest item https://www.wowhead.com/cata/item=45039. Once you recieve that item, you turn it into an NPC inside the Archivum. who then gives you a quest to go into Yogg-Saron's brain and defeat him. Once you do this, you will recieve your weapon!

*UPDATE*

As of 4/8/09 there has been an update on the quest. After you collect the shards and recieve the quest to make the mace, you have to throw the shards INTO Yogg-Saron's maw while he is casting defeaning roar. (This is predicted to be casted somewhat later into the fight)

well now all classed have had their peice of the legendary cake.
warriors,rogues got thunderfury in vanilla wow, warglaves in TBC, warriors and other 2hand melee dps also got sulfuras. casters got Atiesh in vanilla wow, and hunters (and rogues lol) got Thori'dal in TBC. this is just setting the scales even.

If fragments are a guaranteed drop from every Ulduar hard-mode, top guilds will be getting 11 fragments per week. This means one mace each month, which will make them extremely common next to the other legendaries we've seen in the game.

Of course there's still a chance hard modes will be hard, but I'm betting against it from what we've seen so far on the PTR.

I would say gratts to the healer that get the first fragment in a guild. Guess that if the Guild master and the officer got any common sence they let the guy that got the first1 have prio on the others aswell. My personal opinion is that there is just silly to have 2 healers with 15 fragments each.

The drop rates being reported right now are very preliminary, of course, since the instance has only been out for about a week. However, it looks like Blizzard has tuned this to a roughly 10% drop rate on "easy mode" encounters.

Given that (and assuming my math is right):

The odds of assembling 30 fragments after exactly 30 boss kills are so infinitesimally small that it's not even worth reporting.

The odds of assembling 30 after 140 bosses (10 full clears) are roughly 0.004812%.

The odds of assembling 30 after 280 bosses (20 full clears) are roughly 37.339683%.

The odds of assembling 30 after 320 bosses (30 full clears) are roughly 98.271345%.

Notes:

A) Most guilds won't full clear the place the first few weeks. That will likely increase the length of time (but not the number of boss kills) required for a full mace.

B) Many guilds will be moving to "hard mode" bosses well before 30 weeks. Hard mode bosses should have a higher drop rate, hence reducing both the time and the number of boss kills required to assemble a mace - by how much, it is impossible to compute at present.

Assuming that we have another 4-6 months before the next content patch, raid groups that keep after this place through that time should have decent odds (but no guarantee) of assembling exactly one mace. Raid groups that continue farming it for some time after the next raid comes out should have very good odds of assembling a mace.

Legendary mace.

The droprate is 12% for each of the 30 fragments wich means 250 bosses need to be killed for a complete mace.
30/0,12=250

There are 13 bosses to be killed and one that is not.
So 250/13=19 resets.

19/4= 5 months on average to gather the pieces.

The instance will be very old and tired by then and the mace will never see the daylight for many that have fragments.
I feel like this timespan is quite a turnoff, but 3 months would be more like a fair deal.

Yay! I was hoping that I wasn't going to end up ceding this to one of our druids or priests, being the first in line to get this in our guild and being a shammy. I'm seeing a lot of comments on mmo-champion to the effect that this is not itemized well with its lack of regen, but remember you can't compare it directly to the amazing staves that drop in Ulduar unless you're accounting for the offhand you would couple this with. Also, most healers should be able to afford losing regen on their weapon at this level anyway when every other piece of gear for the spirit regenners has, well, spirit lol.

If I am reading WoW Armory correctly, at http://www.wowarmory.com/item-info.xml?i=45038. These shards actually have a very low chance of dropping on some of the later bosses in Normal Ulduar.

EDIT: Not sure why this is downrated, seeing that Blizzard says it has a chance of dropping from Normal mode too is insightful.

Shard dropped for us in 25 man off razorscale, didnt get the shard but i got the mace the he drops tho :-)

It's worth noting, that altough the recipe Forming Val'anyr, Gavel of Ancient Kings states that you need 29 fragments, the real number you need is 30, because of the game considerating one shard as starting the spell and getting destroyed and then destroying another 29 to complete the spell so the total amount of shards needed is 30.

Do note that, if indeed the fragments have a chance of dropping out of 10 man Ulduar, and a said person Full Clears BOTH 10 Ulduar and 25 Ulduar, it would be much faster to gain Fragments, and be able to produce a mace even earlier than ~13 Weeks. This would give approx 2/4 Guaranteed Fragments(Dependant on Algalon), and then whatever luck you may get for the other 12 Bosses.

Anyone know if blizz has changed the drop percentages on these?
I had been running Ulduar regularly during the end of wrath, and remember seeing an average of 4 fragments per run (Once had 6 in a single run) Today I ran a full hard-mode clear at level 85 and saw only ONE fragment, from Yogg (100% drop chance).
Everyone got their drake achievements, and I'm only one frag closer to finishing my Val'anyr. 3 more frags to go.... 4 more weeks at this rate.

Does anyone have solid proof that 25-man 0-tower mode Flame Leviathon will possibly drop a fragment? My brother and I have been clearing him for a couple weeks now and want to make sure we aren't wasting our time since it's not exactly simple to pull off.

In the Ulduar 25 runs I have gotten around 3 fragments from each normal run(no-glory runs) and around 5 fragments from the glory runs. The most fragments dropped in a run was 6 for me, which was obviously a glory one.

Did anyone ever confirm that Fragments are more likely to drop in hard mode? I can kill FL with no towers, but if by leaving one tower up increases my chance at seeing a Fragment then I'll try to do that.

Bewarned, it can NOT be traded after looting.

Just did a ulduar pug on my paladin. A shard drops with group role on. A couple of poeple think "orange, so i need". Unfortanly a warrior wins it. After some drama, he finaly decides to trade it with me. But he can't.
Bit later at yogg, now with master looter. I roll. some other warrior thinks he can role so he does, higher than me. A paladin guildie see this and tries also to roll and win it for me. Lucky he wins. He trys also to trade it me, and he can't also.

Lost 1 fragement to a ninja, and 1 to some trying to counter a ninja.
Soo next time i'm doing ulduar, i'm going to make sure it's master looter or need before greed

At 85 with a decent level of gear (LFR\DS normal) it's possible to 3-man farm this stuff without special problems, I do this as a blood dk 399 item level with a holy paladin in 392 and a fire mage in 390, we can kill 11\14 bosses on 25-man, ofc on normal mode; only bosses not doable are yogg saron (impossible to keep up with tentacles, too much hp, too many of them), algalon (enrage way too tight) and thorim (enrage problems and also p1 doesn't seem doable with less than 4 people, although I reckon a group of 2 blood dks in dps gear and a feral druid might be able to kill this last boss, due to more dps, so easier arena phase).

Normally 2-3 shards drop out of 11 bosses, and mimiron hardmode 25, although most likely not worth the time, IS doable 3-man: a dk in 400 item level or slightly more in full dps gear soloed the 25 normal version letting him enrage at the end of p2, so the only parts which enraged were those not in fight, so for 30 mins he outhealed the adds in p3, then when the enrage ended he finished, this would be the same way to do firefighter 25 in 2-3 people (only 10 mins to get him to the end of p2, so most likely not enough dps solo); would take over an hour, but has more chance to drop; I don't consider other hardmodes doable in so small groups yet, short of maybe flame leviathan.

As of 5.0.4, thorim became doable with our setup, due to insane aoe dps for blood dks, so 1 could just solo the arena till the other 2 complete the tunnel (this with 403 dps gear now), which brings it to 12\14 3-mannable at 25, and also freya +1 doable and has been soloed even +3, but that requires really soloing, cause that way you can stack trash in p2 and get an insane amount of vengeance which allows you to beat the enrage. Mimiron has become harder, hp and damage buffed by 60-70%, but still doable. Haven't had the chance to try, but yogg saron 25-man with all keepers could've been doable 3-man as of the patch, always due to insane aoe dps, and killing tentacles on p2 is the only problem, p3 is a joke.

At level 90 every normal mode encounter should become trivial, still will check which hardmodes will be doable and which ones won't; the ones which were already almost doable at 85, like mimiron firefighter or xt heartbreaker will be a joke, though.

Anyway, lately, I only saw 1 drop each run usually, so anyone can confirm if there might have been a nerf on drop rate since 5.0.4?
