this will surely be nerfed =P...pretty sure at least...else it would more or less completly replace instant poison ^^ since it does 2/3 of its damagde it does ((checked IX instant poison)) and applies a nasty debuff on the target making it useful for both bossfights AND pvp...mostly pvp....rlly...pvp....love....

Assuming 3000 AP Wound Poison VII will do ~175 dmg per strike (351 dmg per application at 50% application rate) before VP talent and Instant Poison IX will only be doing 120 dmg per strike (600 dmg per application at 20% application rate). However, this discrepancy between the two poisons will persist regardless of AP. We know this because: .2*(300+0.1*AP) ≠ .5*(231+0.04*AP) since simplification of this inequality yields 60+0.02*AP ≠ 115.5+0.02*AP which further reduces to 60≠115.5. Simply put, Wound Poison is better than Instant poison for all weapon speed and attack power values.

In addition, there are some cases in which Wound Poison will be better than Deadly Poison. For example: given a weapon speed of <0.75 at 3000 AP, Wound poison will do more dmg than fully stacked Deadly Poison.

Edit: To clarify the conclusion of the first paragraph - the statement was made in regards to untalented poisons. For Combat and Subtlety Rogues the current implementation of WP will always be better than IP; however, Mutilate Rogues speccing into Imp Poisons will get slightly more dmg from IP than from WP (given an AP > 2550).

Update: It seems they have switched the base dmg of Wound VII and Instant IX so now the highest rank of IP will do ~69 dmg/strike more than the highest rank of WP regardless of AP (before poison talents). Poison talents would tend to increase the discrepancy between IP and WP dmg. In short: IP is now better than WP in terms of straight dps.

Are you sure? Not according to my math.

Going off the numbers in game, I have 2876 AP and Instant Poison says it deals 577 damage, Would Poison says it deals 342 damage.

Would Poison: 342 * 0.5 = 171 Damage Per Strike
Instant Poison: 577 * 0.2 = 115.4 Damage Per Strike

So for me, as a Combat Spec Sword Rogue, Would Poison does indeed do more damage than Instant Poison IX.

To make instant poison deal more damage than Wound poison you need:
1: have 5 talents in improved poisons.
2: have more than 3046 ap. (since instant poison scale more from ap than wound)

So for a combat rogue in pve, wound/wound or wound/deadly is the way to go.

For a mutilate rogue with full improved poisons and over 3046 attack power, instant poison is better.

But Everyone on this post is forgetting one thing. Wound poison reduces healing by 50%. This makes it much more effective in PVP against Priests, Druids, Shamans, Pallys. Heck this even reduces Blood DK heals, Warlock life drains, or Mage evocates, bandages, or lifeblooms. Basically, everyone will be healing and this stops that. If you add up the amount of heal prevented, there is no comparison.

The tooltip on instant poison is wrong, it has a damage range of 300-400 with which it comes down to

(0.2+0.1)*(350+0.1*AP)=0.5*(231+0.04*AP)

105+0.03*AP=115.5+0.02*AP

0.01*AP=15.5

AP=1550

A ridiculously low amount for a level 80 Mutilate rogue :)

If it is correct that IP's dmg range is 300 to 400 then the AP cut off point would be 1050 and not 1550 since 115.5-105=10.5 and not 15.5; so it would reduce to 0.01*AP>10.5 solving for AP gives a minimum AP of 1050 for 5/5 Imp Poisons IP to out dmg WP.

Edit: An even more ridiculously low amount for a level 80 Mutilate Rogue :P

In Patch 3.1.0, Instant Poisons and Wound Poisons will proc based on the weapon speed, currently normalized to 1.4 weapon speed.

Here's a list for the 3.1.0 Wound Poison proc chances:

1.3 Speed - 46.43%
1.4 Speed - 50.00%
1.5 Speed - 53.57%
1.6 Speed - 57.14%
1.7 Speed - 60.71%
1.8 Speed - 64.29%
2.6 Speed - 92.86%
2.8 Speed - 100.00%

Expect to see Combat rogues kick ass in 3.1.0 :)

hmm say if i'm using a 1.5 speed weapon, and if i stack haste items and throw in a SnD, it still won't affect the proc rate of poisons right?

From what I've been able to see sor far on my rogue (only 54 atm) the only diff now between Wound and Instant poison seems to be whether you want more dmg (instant) or reduce their healing (wound) as they seem to proc at the same ppm now.

I really wonder with the upcoming change on the mage talent (permafrost) now that all chill effects will reduce all healing effects received on the target by 20% if it will stack with this poison making it a 70% decrease in healing received.

I apologize if this is a stupid question, but I'm levelling a rogue with a friend and sometimes we accidentally pull lots of mobs at once... We are still relatively low levels, so I occasionally have to use Gouge as a form of CC when we get big pulls. I'd like to know if Wound Poison can proc on a Gouge and immediately break the incapacitate effect. With a 2.8 speed weapon meaning a 100% proc rate, would Gouge become an unusable CC move?

sylvandyr, only dots will break your gouge.
instant poison and wound poison and any other kind of damage proc that is not a dot will not interfere with your incapitation effects.

i have learned that gouge does not apply poisons anymore. so even when you have deadly poison on your weapons, it is not going to have a chance to render your cc useless. good.

Don't know about theorycraft, but by sheer testing I can assure you this is the best poison for a combat/sub rogue in any situation, and the best in 5 man regardless of spec.
