New in patch 2.3, these are located in the waters around Karazhan. They cook into Skullfish Soup, a caster buff food that gives 20 spell critical strike rating & spirit for 30 min.

After fishing for 20 minutes in Zul'Aman I got the following catches:

- 36 Barbed Gill Trouts (50%)
- 20 Crescent-Tail Skullfish (28%)
- 10 Bloodfin Catfish (14%)
- 5 Lightning Eel (8%)

I fished in the waters up to the left and right when you just enter the instance. (See screenshot)

Oh, and watch out for the patrolling elite mobs. ;)

First ten minutes of fishing at Deadwind Pass! with 495 Fishing Skill (375+100+20)

18 Barbed Gill Trouts (45%)
8 Crescent-Tail Skullfish (20%)
7 Bloodfin Catfish (17.5%)
7 Lightning Eel (17.5%)

What's interesting is the next ten minutes of fishing at the same spot, same conditions, except this time at 470 Fishing Skill (375+75+20):

29 Barbed Gill Trouts (78%)
3 Crescent-Tail Skullfish (8%)
5 Bloodfin Catfish (14%)
0 Lightning Eel (0%)

Diminishing returns? Who knows.

The only other note is that no schools of Crescent-Tail Skullfish appear anywhere along the body of water here.

After fishing only for 10 mins at low 381 skill (256+100+25) got:
9xBloodfin catfish
8xCrescent-Tail Skullfish
3xLightning eel
Also was some "Your fish gone away" but not many. So u can try earn some money via fishing not only at top skill level ;) GL

Think the drop rate for these are higher at night than at day. Fished for them outside Kara around 9pm, and got plenty of them. Probably 10 out of 40 or something. Next day i got 2 out of 35, and that was at 1pm.

second cast at the very top of map outside all the way north got mine just needed it for cooking achievement so it took me longer getting there then catching the fish

I can confirm that all the waters outside of ZA only drop very low level fish, none of the skullfish, eels, or catfish. None of the waters anywhere outside the instance have these higher level fishes. You must fish these inside the actual instance, not the area around it. And to enter ZA, you must be in a raid group, which requires two members at least to enter, if you can find a guildy agreeable to helping out.

If you're solo, Deadwind Pass is your only option.

These can still be fished from the waters around kara, I had some bad luck trying to catch one of these for The Limnologist.

There's a long chain of quests leading to getting the key to Karazhan starting in Shattrath (Archmage Alturus). The second quest, Arcane Disturbances (Arcane Disturbances) takes you into 2 separate cellars underneath the destroyed town next to the gates of Karazhan. One of these cellars leads to a cave which contains an Underground Pool from which you can quickly and easily fish up many skullfish. (The pool is used for taking one of the water readings for the quest, but you don't need the quest to get to the fishing pond -- you just wouldn't know it was there without the quest.)

Here's how to get there: Get to the Archmage at the gates of Karazhan (Archmage Alturus). Face back into the town and walk back 20-30 yards into the town where there's a narrow side street on your right. Go up that about 20-30 yards and you find yourself between 2 houses burned to the ground (as opposed to the other houses that are just falling apart). Each of these burned-out houses has a ramp in their main floor going down into their cellars, but you want the one on your right. Down the ramp there's a landing then ramp then landing then steep ramp that looks like a drop but is still walkable both down and up . (Warning, the landings have alcoves with a mob waiting for you on each side as well as the mob you can see in the middle, so hug a wall going down to avoid over-pulling if you're level 68-70.)

The steep ramp takes you into a cave with a path that corkscrews downwards. Follow the path (kill more mobs) and about halfway down you come to a largish blue pond with 2-4 mobs on your side of it. But on the far side of the pond on the left is a rock shelf you can walk/swim to where no mobs spawn at all and you can fish in peace. I fished for 20-30 minutes and ended up with about a dozen skullfish as well as the other types Elcius mentions above. It's really strangely peaceful down there, a bit like fishing in Ironforge but without a sea of other people's bobbers splashing to contend with.

To leave, just hearth or walk back the way you came in.

I highly suggest fishing for these out of the small lake at the south end of the zone. In the 17 casts I did I got:

10 Barbed Gill Trout
3 Lightning Eels
3 Bloodfin Catfish
1 Crescent-Tail Skullfish

So it's fully confirmed that the time restrictions mentioned above have been removed. You can fish them all up anytime you wish.

Don't forget to keep at least 1 for your Cooking Achievements!

I fished near Karazhan in Deadwind Pass between 7:30-8:30 pm server time on a Monday. I was able to get 16 Lightning Eel along with 103 Barbed Gill Trout, 41 Bloodfin Catfish, and 43 Crescent-Tail Skullfish. Hope this helps someone.

I went down in to the "masters celler" Karazhan/Deadwind Pass, I fished for 20 mins this morning, I am maxed at fishing and added a lure for the heck of it. In the 20 mins I caught:
10 lightening eel
36 barbed gill trout
15 crescent-tail skullfish
12 bloodfin catfish

As of 4.3 with 525 fishing, Nat's Lucky Fishing Pole, Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat, and lure activated in the pond right outside Karazan I caught:

x4 Bloodfin Catfish
x1 Barbed Gill Trout
x1 Lightning Eel

I fished at the cords 52,70 close to Karazhan. My first 100 fish were as follows: 63 Barbed Gill Trout, 17 Bloodfin Catfish, 17 Crescent-Tail Skullfish and 3 Lightning Eel. My skill is 375 + 127 (rod, glove enchant, fishing hat and aquadynamic lure). Fishing without lure caused several "fish got away."

Me and a guild mate were fishing in ZA today and we caught a fair number of these and the Bloodfin Catfish as well as lightening eels

During the time I was fishing outside of Karazhan and I used 2 lures, I caught 2 stacks of Barbed Gill Trout, 1 stack of Bloodfin, 12 skullfish and 2 eels. Not too bad.

Edit: found fish in lake outside Karazhan. around 52,70 (Deadwind Pass map). I did need bait on my fishing rod to catch them though, despite having 375 fishing + 20 on rod.

Using 2 Lures = to 20 Mins. I got the following:

You can fish these up a little outside Karazhan, which as far as I know, doesn't have any water in it. Presumably its the same for Zul'Aman.

I had no real troubles fishing there with my 400 unbuffed fishing (375 skill and 25 from my rod) but I put on a lure anyway, and none of the fish came close to getting away.

Most of the time you'll catch Bloodfin Catfish and Barbed Gill Trout, so you'll need to spend some time here to catch a decent amount of fish. I'll do some testing next time I go to Zul'Aman to see if the drop % is any better inside.

30 minutes at Deadwind Pass (53.72) - 13:45 Server - Began at skill 350/470 - No Pools

Best thing overall was no misses in the zone at 470 buffed which is great for the leveling grind.

Finished @ 360, 120 fish caught.
- Barbed Gill Trout: 57 / 47.5%
- Crescent-Tail Skullfish: 32 / 26.7%
- Bloodfin Catfish: 23 / 19.2%
- Lightning Eel: 8 / 6.7%
