Volcanus is a boss you summon in the Firelands to complete the quest "Delegation" for the Dragonwrath staff. A legendary caster staff in Cataclysm.

Phase 1.) : Harbingers of Flame - Same as the trash, interrupt and all that.

Phase 2.): A giant flaming tree will spawn. The group will be AoE rooted. When the roots hit, they do a lot of damage to the raid. The roots must stay on until the tree stomps or you get blown off the edge a la Lich King ice spheres. Once the stomp occurs, dispel immediately.

Phase 3.) Volcanus himself shows up who looks like an armored fire elemental. Let tank grab aggro and hero/bloodlust/timewarp/whatever. The boss does raid-wide AoE damage. He also summons a few columns of fire that will kill you quickly so avoid them. It's a DPS race so burn him asap.

I just got done doing this myself on 10 man and this is what I found (adding to what nickgreyden already posted):

Phase 1: Harbingers of Flame are caster mobs (there are 4 of them). The have two spells. One is a single target spell (fieroblast) which can be healed through. The other is fieroblast barrage which must be interrupted. Assign one interrupter per mob (two tanks and two melee in our case) and just keep the barrage interrupted. Other than that, just burn them down one at a time. Healers, just make sure the interrupters are getting topped off. Of course it is not like you don't already know to make the empty bars full again. ;)

Phase 2: Basically, during this phase there is a big, evil tree (about 9 million hp if I remember) that you dps. It summons adds (which have about 50k or so hp and do a pulsing AE). Just assign 2 ranged to AE nuke the adds. As nickgreyden already said, there is a "roots" ability that keeps you from being knocked off the ledge. Basically, don't dispel/trinket/racial out of the roots unttil the tree boss casts stomp. The roots do damage to the raid, but it is easily healable (we had a holy pally, holy priest, and resto druid). Once stomp is cast, it is safe to cleanse. Once the tree gets down to like 20% or so, it will turn green and trigger the final phase.

Phase 3: This is a "burn phase", but is it pretty easy if your dps is decent. The quest holder (me as an arcane mage in this case) gets a buff that turns them into "tree form". In this case, you do more damage, can't run out of mana (basically your typical scary God-mode buff). I basically tanked the entire final phase without any problems and it was over pretty quickly.

After that, just wait for the branch to be clickable, get it and go on to the next part of the quest (and grats on getting your step 1 staff).

There had been rumours for a mount dropping from this, i heard alot of people discussing about it in trade channel of my realm. When he dies, there won't be a corpse left, nor is there any chest of similar mechanic that shows an item being lootable, except for the branch of nordrassil. Just stating that those rumours are rumours.

If two people are on Delegation, and both get all 4 focii, is it possible for both people to get the staff in the same week? Serious question. >.<

Dumb question but does your raid group help you with this part of the quest? do they go into the portal with you? or do you do it by yourself like with tarecgosa at the nexus? Totally confused someone pls help!

your entire raid helps you with this. your raid leader should read up and be prepared for its mechanics. it's possible to wipe, but as long as you don't reset the instance, you can try multiple times. once you open the portal, you lose all the materials that you gathered from the four bosses, so if you disband the raid, you have to do all that crystal focus stuff again.

We frapsed this as we did it on 10man for our Warlock - confirming also that what nickgreyden and cerdia are stating about the abilities and mechanics is right - except we had our bear tank as the questtaker didn't seem to get the aggro, at least not in the first phase while the tree was big and not on our side .)

PoV of resto druid, doing the quest for an arcane mage in my guild.
The raid damage in this fight is off the chain. We had four healers pulling consistent 30k+ hps throughout both phases, the big burning tree and the big elemental. IMO this was the most fun fight to heal in all of firelands.
Note to other resto druids: be careful when you treeform in the big burning tree phase, since shapeshifting activates disentanglement and dispels the roots automatically. My poor tree went flying off the island and I had no idea why since I never intentionally dispelled myself :(

edit: we never dispelled the roots. If you time dispels with the stomps you could take some stress off the healers, but where's the fun in that?
