These hawks are tameable, but you need the quest "A Different Approach" to bring them down out of the sky and tame one. Perfect for undead hunters!

Just submitted a screenshot for those wondering what it looks like.Overall, this is a really cool pet. I noticed a few hiccups with it, such as it either flies too low or too high (compared to other tamed birds) occasionally but overall it functions just fine. Sometimes it will hover just above your head, too.

In order to obtain this bird, you need to do the quest linked above. It isn't difficult by any means. However, there is one pre-requisite quest before the "Different Approach" quest, and it involves killing 20 various wildlife. This quest can be found here: Zen'Kiki, the Druid

Once you get the quest "A Different Approach", you will need to go up the hill right to the east of the small camp. There's a small path that winds to the top and all the Undead hawks (not-attackable at this stage) are flying above it you. When you get to the top, Zen'kiki (your partner in the quest) will talk about how he will bring one of the birds do. You will get a "gear" icon upon clicking on him. Click on him, let the bird come down and just begin tame.

Few seconds later, begin enjoying your new pet! :)

This bird when tamed will be able to -fly.- No no, I mean really fly, as of right now it can chase flagged players flying in the air. Or with the Move To command be told to fly onto roofs or statues that you can't get onto otherwise.

I hope they stay tamable/usable. They're just really really cool... but, remember what happened to Ghost Wolves. :(

This pet is tamable by both , the horde and the alliance. Just got tamed on my ally hunter.

Wrote a ticket three days ago asking if it is intended to tame this pet .. took ages to get an answer.

GM said they to not plan to remove the pet atm but he could not guarantee that this does not change with Cata.

So not to much help appart from "they know, and they don't freak out". Uploaded screen of ticket .. but its in german.

While the latest hotfix says that flying pets have had that ability removed, as of 12/1/10 my diseased hawk is still able to fly where it pleases. It would seem they only hit the seagulls (I don't have one, so I'm unable to check to make certain), but considering the hotfix confirms they don't want flying pets, players should expect this to be nerfed in the near future.

Tamed this earlier today, really liked it and decided to level it up to 80. Usually this doesn't take too long, but for some reason this bird hardly gets any xp off me killing things. Leveling it killing mammoths in Storm Peaks near the Hodir area, as I have many of my recently tamed pets. This one, however doesn't seem to get any xp at all (maybe around 100 xp or less per mammoth) way lower than other pets. Anyone else experience this? Tempted to open a ticket, but afraid to get the word that this wasn't meant to be tamed.

EDIT: Found out the decrease in my new pet's xp may have something to do with an xp change they did in a hotfix this week. Though a change in pet leveling was never written about in any post I've seen.

If you already completed this quest and didn't realize how awesome this pet was, don't fret! You can get a friend to start the quest for you, granted they still need to do the prerequisite.

Have your friend get Zen'Kiki to shoot down a bird then attack it yourself once. If you try to tame it just when Zen'Kiki attacks, you will keep getting interrupted mid-tame somehow. After attacking, tame as normal. :)

My 83 undead hunter just found out about these guys and went to tame one. I had to track low-level quests for the starter quest. After you kill a bunch of local fauna with that spawned Druid NPC, the follow-up quest sends you after these guys.

You have to "talk to" Zen'Kiki and he attacks them to bring them down one by one. EASY to tame. After taming, I dismissed him and finished the quest. After re-summoning him, Zen'Kiki didn't attack him.

They have the standard hawk powers, but are very rare to see tamed. The snatch power is useful if you are fighting armed foes. Generally he's a useful pet with a very particular appearance.

Next patch, the Vargul Plaguetalons in Zul'drak, which share this skin, should be tamable. On the PTR now. Kinda sucks... I liked having a really rare pet on my Undead Hunter. ;) But, it's cool for those that completed the quest and then didn't realize they couldn't tame the Diseased Hawks afterward.

Edit: Also Scourgebeak Fleshrippers in Icecrown.

I love this model, I've been using this pet on my 85 Worgen Hunter since it's release. It's different, original and fun to stare at while you're bored.

One of the best possible Hunter pets in World of Warcraft, as far as originality and creativity is concerned.

As of now you can tame these Vargul Plaguetalon It's the same model but no need to go through these low level quests.
Edit: Found some more birds that share this model: Scourgebeak Fleshripper and https://www.wowhead.com/cata/npc=31263.

These Hawks are still tamable as of 3/08/2012 - still need the quest A Different Approach to be able to tame them.

How I did my taming @ level 41.

1. place a freezing trap on the ground
2. click on the druid to make him shoot one
3. wait for it to come to you thus freezing in the trap and stopping the druid from attacking
4. then start taming once it is frozen
5. once tamed dismiss the pet or the next one the druid will try to summon will be your pet. he will just keep shooting it for some reason.

Also - if you are wanting this pet there are other models that share the same skin but are at a higher level and the information can be found petopia website, which is a great website for any hunter.
