Considering that death knights will use two handers to tank, i think this might be slightly itemized towards them over other classes as expertise is exceptionally important in tanking. That's not to say that this would serve as an amazing titan's grip and ms warriors as well as ret paladins and dps dk's as well.

I wonder why this has agility at all, most classes that use two-handed maces (warriors, DKs and paladins) would prefer straight up crit rating.

Sure, shamans (or even druids) could use 2h maces, but it doesn't seem a plausible reason, seeing how far from optimal this is to the mentioned classes.

Great weapon anyhow, and looks very fitting for, say, a Death Knight.

Agility is superior to crit for a DK tank :) I believe this is also the highest Stamina on a PVE 2H so far, and expertise is another good stat for tanking. For plate DPSers, yes this would be probably only be used until one of the other epic 2Hs dropped.

This is one of the few weapons in the beta well itemized for DK tanking. The expertise directly addresses their high reliance on reliable hits to maintain rotations, the Str provides a healthy dose of Parry, and the Agi is a burly dodge boost (DK's dodge scales from Agi more like paladins than warriors).

The notion that "frost=tank" is misinformed. All three trees are intended to be MT-capable, and in recent builds Unholy has been favored as a tank spec over Frost. Still in beta, changes weekly.

DW is another matter. Devs have made it clear that, if anything, they discourage DW tanking. The stat requirements for DW vs 2h are at cross purposes of tank stat stacking. It may well be viable in the final mix, but it will not be the preferred way to go. At best, 2h and DW will be equivalent (though dev's have expressed preference for 2h).

According to blue post by Ghostcrawler: feral attack power will disappear from weapons, and druids will gain damage in feral forms based on a conversion of the weapon's own dps.
Seemengly, converting the said dps into some form of AP.

Said that, 2h users beware: druids will bite to get their hands on this, for it is both great as a tank and as a dps weapon.
Considering the patch with the mentioned changes will go live sooner that 3.1 and Ulduar, be prepared for it, cause it won't be far away.

I totally agree on this being an awesome DK tanking weapon, but (speaking as a ret pally) it is much better for DPS than you realize. The problem is that Blizzard tends to put haste and armor penetration on "DPS" weapons, and to a ret pally those stats are nearly worthless. Agility is, by comparison, a noticeably better DPS stat.

As a result, for paladins (and especially for human paladins with mace mastery), this is one of the best ret pally DPS weapons in the game. The only things that could potentially beat it are the KT axe drops (and for a human pally, probably only the heroic KT drop).

This is most likely one of the best 2H tanking weapons for an Unholy/any tank specced DK.
The expertise keeps you from getting Parry gibbed and as long as you have some hit on some of your other gear, you'll have an excellent tanking 2H, due to the Str(Parry) + Agi(dodge) + Sta.

As a druid dps, this would also be very nice but because of the expertise, this is more directed at a DK tank, as you will NEVER stand in front of mobs that you are attacking while raiding.

The agility, besides the crit you mentioned, also gives (minimal) armor and, more importantly for DK tanks, a good bit of dodge. While a DPS warrior may like pure crit more, making it agility also turns this into a phenomenal DK tanking weapon.

Also, and I don't think this has been mentioned yet, Blizzard is notorious for (intentionally, at times) not perfectly itemizing items. Gear from MC and BWL can slide, since they were obviously learning about their own game at that point, which is fair. But even since then, gear is rarely 100% optimized for a single purpose. Dev's have admitted that, for instance, haste rating on some of the hunter Tier 7 may not be the *best* use of item points, but it's what they chose to use them on. Again, that may not even apply to this item (since it is nearly perfectly optimized for a DK tank and is still very near the peak for DPS'ers), but it's worth mentioning.

All I want to say is,

Im a ret pally and im a dwarf. The expertise combined with my racial makes this thing way nice to have.

I am enjoying the DPS it provides.

Also its a trash drop, which means you will prob see 1 a run in 25 Naxx full clears.

Either way its a great mace for anyone who benefits from expertise, which is everyone.

Every melee needs expertise to take dodges off of their combat table. That's why it shows up in the Arms and Combat trees as well as all three DK trees. Depending on class, you will be gathering anywhere between 112 (blood DKs) and 200 (anyone w/o expertise talents) expertise rating. 8 points of expertise are equivalent to 8 points of hit rating. This mace *is* well itemized for tanking. That doesn't mean it's not well itemized for DPS too.

Once my guild is back in 25s, I'll be picking up a pair for TG Fury once our dwarven Ret, our main Fury, and our tanking DKs are set. *Add ferals to the list once they get true weapon scaling.

edit: I do realize a pair of these is 19 expertise and Fury via talents only needs 17. That however frees a point for Piercing Howl, a very useful talent that can be unfortunately difficult to fit into a spec, or Anger Management, which is basically a passive Bloodrage.

1. high strength = high parry rating
2. high stam = high hp, no brainer here
3. expertise to help our hits land = more threat in the long run

For a paladin, agility is actually almost as good as crit rating (assuming you're in a raid and have kings). The difference between the two is almost negligible. This fact for example makes the agi/3% crit meta better than the crit rating/3% crit meta because you only have to use 1 blue gem for the former and 2 for the latter.

For a ret pally, this is probably the 3rd best weapon in the game after the two KT axes.

This will probably end up being an WONDERFUL cat druid DPS weapon for druids after 3.0.8 because of the feral weapon changes.

According to Here, the formula for generating feral AP from weapons will be 14*(DPS-55), so an weapon like this with 203.7 DPS would end up giving 2081 AP.

Assuming we still will still get some decent benefit from STR, this could end up being an pretty nice cat DPS item.

Thinking about it, this weapon seems to me to be designed if not necessarily specifically for, with death knight tanks in mind (along with druid tanks). The Devs have said that DK's are intended to tank with a 2-handed weapon, and since there aren't any with outright defensive stats aside from the random feral staff, something with STR, AGI, and STM seems a likely choice.

Death knights get huge bonuses from AGI all around. Decent armor, decent dodge, not to mention the extra parry they get from STR. The expertise is really key for tanking in Wrath, as a tank now needs to have a decent balance of hit rating and expertise aside from pure defensive rating to be able to tank. When compared to a lot of 2-handers, this seems really tailored for DK tanking, in the absence of 2-handers with outright defensive stats, like defense rating or parry rating.

Come 3.0.8 this'll be #2 in terms of DPS for a Feral Druid (Undeath Carrier or the Jawbone will be #3).

Journey's end will still be just a little bit better due to it's 13 more Item levels but it's closer then you'd think thanks to Blizzard dropping STR off Feral Staffs in favor of Hunter friendly AP.

This is substantially behind Journey's End post patch, by around 400 kitty points according to Tossk's calculator. That's more than doube this weapons upgrade over the #3 weapon.

It is however an extremely good tanking weapon for Feral now.

except you forget that come 3.0.8 all armor on feral staves are disappearing. it will not be possible to get armor on a staff due to the armor being removed.

Blizzard has since said that the armor on feral staves will not be disappearing. Simply the Str will be changed into equivalent amount of ap, and dps on the weapon brought up to the proper level.

Armor is still a good stat for bears. It's just not an insanely good stat that trumps all others.

Some staves have armor and some do not. Those with armor won't be as attractive to hunters but it depends on what they are upgrading from.

We don't expect there to be 100% overlap in which weapons hunters and druids (and possibly even warriors) want. But there will be more overlap than there is now.

this is as current the highest end DK Frost Tank Weapon due to the high Damage scaling with Obliterate and other skills as well as parry boost from strength+ dodge boost from agility+health from stamina.

A simplified breakdown of what it translates into is;

We had TWO of these drop for my guild raid last night. One right after the first boss in Plague and one right after Grand Widow in spider. A DK upgraded from Titansteel Destroyer and I upgraded from Colossal Skull Clad cleaver :D (Ret Paladin).

It was a night of 2h weapons, The Polearm dropped from Heigan and The Jawbone dropped from Maexxna. Hunter got polearm and another ret pally got Jawbone.

I don't know how the other classes are feeling about the issue of this weapon being opened up to druids, but I picked one up that was going to rot last night and fully intend on using it. I have not decided what enchant to use for it, but as it stands I think I will be using this for theat (High expertise opens up a lot of options even though I have very high expertise in my threat set as is), Journey's End for Cat DPS and Origin of Nightmares for tanking. I imagine other druids will be doing something similar, but I would hate to see them take it from a class that could get some full time use out of it. Just food for thought.

This is an excellent ret pally weapon. One of the best I've seen in-game. Many will look at the 3.40 weapon speed and dismiss it; but what your really looking for is how much damage per swing you'll do (as all our abilities are based on that) and this one has one of the highest in game right now. Plus the agility is huge for crit. Very nice.

This item is very well itemized for Death Knight tanking, and post patch will be great for Feral Druids as well. However, it's also got very nice stats for a TG warrior or Retribution Paladins, though a Retridin might want a slower weapon than this if he can get it.

This coupled with Betrayer of Humanity would make an exceptional TG combo, I reckon.

IMO as of 3.0.8 this may be one of the best DK tanking weapons in the game with the 25 Defense rune being added, and mind you, that isnt rating, but a straight up boost in defense which is equivilant to about 130 Defense Rating, making One-handed weapons inferior to DK tanking forever and 2 Broken Promises (https://www.wowhead.com/cata/item=40345) the best tanking one handed ATM doesnt compare even with 86 Def rating, 32 Hit and 40 Expertise.

Can't wait to pick this up with my dwarf DK. 100 strength and 80 agility increase both TPS and avoidance, and 120 stam is nothing to cough at either. Add to this the 14.52 expertise you get from this as a dwarf and you've got one helluva tanking mace. I'm currently using Titansteel Destroyer, but this monster gives the TD a run for its money.

You won't be seeing anywhere near "1 per run in a 25-naxx full clear." Trash drops are extremely fickle, and seeing more than one trash drop epic per run (out of the dozen or so possible trash drops in 25man Naxx) is rare enough on it's own.

I recently off tanked a memorable Naxxramas 25 run that saw four random epic drops in ten minutes. A newcomer to the instance asked if this was the norm; the rest of us--while staring at the screen slack-jawed--assured him that no, that was not the case.

My experience, other than that outlier, is that one random drop in an entire Naxxramas (whether 10 or 25) run is indeed the average.

as a DK tank, i am still waiting for this damned thing to drop. it is the best 2h tanking weapon currently in game by a long shot for a DK.

I'm a DK tank and I told my guild's 2H dps guys that I would hold off rolling on any other 2H if they would hold off rolling on this. It dropped tonight in the spider quarter (i was sure if i ever saw it, it would be in plague!) and I'll be tanking with this from now on. Increased TPS by at least 600-800 over my Titansteel Destroyer, or so Omen told me this evening. Some of my HBs are going back to being OBs on boss fights.

This finally dropped for me last night in Military Quarter.
I was the one looting it, been waiting for this for some time now. There was a big fat N in raid chat before anyone even realized something dropped and my cry of joy probably frightened some people :-D

A fury warrior and feral druid also needed and although I did have less dkp our raid leader decided it had to go to me, the feral druid already using another 203 dps staff and the warrior using titansteel destroyer as offhand. We were starting to experience problems with my threat in certain encounters, (using the titansteel destroyer) when I was maintanking, nothing too dangerous but as our dps gears up it became more and more difficult compared to our other tanks. But this wonderful piece makes it impossible now for our druid and even our Warrior to pull threat from me. I am also expertise capped now for dodge at least and this weapon just "feels" right.

Best tanking weapon in the game for a Deathknigh, hands down. If your guild lead is clever this will go to YOU fellow dk tank and not to any dps who has lots of alternatives in naxx and other best in slot items.
Unfortunately most are dkp>all, they probably even hand out dps caster items to healers and vice versa.

So, I was doing 25 Naxx, this drops. I'm the only DK tank in the raid, but every two handed dps rolls on it when some of them have Jawbone, Armageddon, etc. Obviously, it's not just a tank weapon, but I think the tank should have priority over it since the stats are leaning more towards it. But then again, that's what I get for pugging. I probably won't see this drop for awhile unfortunately.

The question isn't so much if haste benefits Ret Pallies, but rather how much haste benefits Ret Pallies in relation to other stats. You are correct that haste increases white damage and correspondingly SoB damage. However, the vast majority (I can't find a good figure now, but I know its around 80%) of our damage comes from sources outside normal swings, so a stat that only boosts 20% of our damage is not very desirable compared to str, agil, etc. that will benefit all our attacks. In addition, haste doesn't affect the GCD of most of Ret's spells, thus further diminishing it's value.

Also, I am stepping outside my class boundaries here, but you are incorrect that other melee classes don't receive side benefits for haste. I believe that haste most benefits warriors (more rage generation) and rogues (more chances to apply poisons, although this will be normalized in 3.1, and also crits restore energy).

Well tbh i believe blood spec (maxed out blood not on any other spec) on frost presence does more aggro than a frost dk since they have more stamina, they can heal1/4 of their health instantly, and in Ulduar we had a lvl 80 warrior tank + a lvl 78 fury warrior, a lvl 80 rogue, and me with my lvl 78 dk in second place for health, i think i did over over 300k damage, and the max dps was around 1300. frost doesn't have dancing rune weapons and bonuses to critical etc.

Now, I'm not disagreeing that it'll do more dps than the ilevel 200 weapons.

But pallies and warriors get more AP from any other ilevel 213 epic out there than off this guy.

Also, a lot of the plate dps and the ONLY epic str dps rings have gobs of expertise on them.

This also has by far the most agility and stam of any 2h mace, sword, or axe in the game besides Betrayer.

Although Betrayer's superior for threat, for mitigation purposes for DK tanks, Betrayer loses out to this weapon. This is due to the fact that Betrayer's itemized with straight AP instead of strength (str -> parry rating) and less agility (agi -> dodge).

This weapon, on the other hand, is perfectly itemized for DK tanks.

Long story short, if you take this out of a DK tank's hands he or she will be very, very angry at you, so be prepared take a dirt nap if you pull aggro (especially using it:).

EDIT: Left out the kitties. They get a TON of AP on this weapon, so ferals are probably the only class really justified in rolling over a DK tank on this weapon.

In the next patch, bears will want to stack crit chance AND attack power (strength, too?) for the new talent Savage Defense. Every crit creates a shield that absorbs 25% of how much AP we have in damage.

This is the best DK tanking weapon in the game by far.
i play a death knight, and i passed every time it dropped until all of the DK tanks in my guild got one.
Sure its great for other classes, but there are better weapons out there that are easier to get (I.E The axe off KT in 10 man naxx) and this is the one weapon a death knight can use that is exceptional for tanking, while there are several exceptional dps weapons throughout the raids as of now.

This is a perfectly viable dps weapon in my opinion, just slightly beneath Armageddon if not tied. Dps and tanks can benefit from it, especially players who are dual specced for both. Just one less thing to swap out when you change specs.

That being said, if Armageddon does drop, would somebody wielding this be wise to roll on it? Haste is kind of a useless stat, correct? Therefore the only thing the sword has on this mace is +1 strength and some crit.

Even counting Ulduar gear the Inevitable Defeat seems solid, agility is a better avoidance stat than STR point-for-point for a DK tank, I believe, but with Worldcarver you do get more stamina.

This is still an outstanding DK Tank weapon, 100 strength gives 25 parry rating (about 0.5% parry), 80 agility is about 1.08% dodge (both before diminishing returns) and 9.4 expertise.

In Tier 7 content and if you are an Orc DK Tank with access to all T7 weapons, in general Betrayer of Humanity is stronger due to the 5 expertise racial, similar agility levels, and more threat generated for the loss of 0.5% parry.

This should be sent to Dk tanks first and foremost. Anyone who says it is as much a dps weapon as a tank weapon is wrong.
The stat budget is not wasted on crit haste or armor pen which a lot of 2 handers have. Agility and expertise are the best tank stats a DK will get off a two hander, other than stam and str of course

the fact its perfect for tanks doesnt mean its not perfect for some DPS classes either. as you said, no useless stats. Its an awesome weapon for both types. Personally this is my favorite ret palla weapon

Close-up detail (for example, in Menaka's screen shot) shows that the head of the mace is a giant skull with blades coming out of the sides and center.
