I did some fishing off the Hillsbrad foothills town dock and picked up a few specimens of strangel kelp in watertight boxes. Just cast a line into the "fish hot spot" to get a pretty good rate of watertight boxes. The boxes also contained leather, wool, and rum. Also good rate of Blackmouth fish if interested.

Stranglekelp (Herb)

Found exclusively underwater.
Used most frequently in underwater breathing potions.
The whole of the plant can be eaten, but it is very salty, and rubbery when fresh.
When used in cooking, it can be used either in powder form, or chopped. It can also be eaten raw.

* WARNING *
Stranglekelp is often very, very deep down and as such, a water breathing potion or spell may be advisable if you intend to gather it.

Not quite true. It can be found on the beach above water in the Zoram Strand in Ashenvale, at least. It's almost always underwater, though.

As far as underwater breathing goes, that is nice, and so is being able to swim quickly. The aquatic form available to druids is very nice. Sometimes there are bubbling fissures at deep depths, particularly if the is a quest in the area, that allow anyone to breathe underwater for a while.

It's probably also worth noting that the levels of monsters you might encounter vary widely depending on the location.

The best place to farm Stranglekelp after the Shattering is hands down Darrowmere Lake in Western Plaguelands.

There are literally DOZENS of spawn points in the lake and most within minimap tracking distance of one another.

Takes a bit of swimming, but there are no enemies, no dangers and nothing else stopping anyone of any level from gathering as much Stranglekelp as they want. Well, except having to rise up for air, of course, though druids, shamans and warlocks will have an even easier time with that.

If you're still farming Stranglekelp in Stranglethorn and Mithril in Burning Steppes, guess what? Something amazing happened during The Shattering! Cataclysm owners can now farm both Stranglekelp and Mithril in ONE area: Thousand Needles!

When you fly to Thousand Needles your flight path there is now Westreach Summit.

First thing you want to do is pick up and complete the quest, "The Grimtotem are Coming" Horde | Alliance from Kanati Greycloud as soon as you land.

Then, Motega Firemane will give you the quest, "Two If By Boat". Horde | Alliance This will swiftly take you to Fizzle and Pozzik's Speedbarge (Carbonite users can note the super fast speed in their map). WARNING! Do not right click the buff out of curiosity, it does indeed remove you from the boat! You will find Pozzik upstairs.

Finally, complete Pozznik's quest, "Do Me a Favor?" Horde | Alliance and you will get a special buff "Speedbarge Diving Helm" that allows you to swim and run underwater anytime you are in Thousand Needles. Tip: Running on the ground, underwater is a LOT faster. +60% faster!

Want more? Oh, Yes, there's more! If you do the follow up quests: "Down in the Deeps" Horde | Alliance, "Pirate Accuracy Increasing" Horde | Alliance, and "Circle the Wagons... er, Boats" Horde | Alliance You will get your very own drivable River Boat!

Now that you have completed these easy steps, you are now ready to farm Stranglekelp and Mithril. Enjoy!

As of the post date on this comment, I have been all over the Word of Warcraft searching for the best place to farm these and I have came to one place where I will defiantly call the best place to farm them and that is under water in Thousand Needles. I did a round in 30 min in Aquatic form and came up with 5 stacks.

I went to Thousand Needles and decided to farm one thousand stranglekelps. It took me more than 2 hours walking on the water floor with a tauren paladin with guild perk. I felt my body bloated! It could be faster if I was a druid, but the faster gather from tauren helped a lot, there was no competition and no fights with mobs. From the 200 mills I got 618 normal pigments and 100 rare pigments. Thousand Needles is the place!

There is one reliable EASY stranglekelp drop near the Zoram Strand. Swim out along the cliffs at the south end of the beach until you find it. I have made flights there for that purpose and it has always been there. of course, there are other drops in the area, but most are well guarded. Good luck!

Stranglekelp is used in a bunch of alchemy recipies, especially any from 120 skill to about 180. One of the recipies is a water breathing potion (it also requires some blackmouth oil you get from, not surprisngly, the oily blackmouth). My utility gatherer is a lv22 Warrior with Skinning/Herbalism and FIshing, cooking and first aid. He gathers the kelp, fishes for blackmouth, then mails stacks back to the mage, who, in turn, sends back a stack of 5 water breathing potions, which give a lot of herb gathering time.

If you're looking for spots, hit the Wetlands. Hands down it's the best place for mid-range characters (20-40) to gather kelp. But beware-- Blizzard has lvl 22-24 or better camping the areas where the kelp pops.

Things I've done to farm stranglekelp effectively are:

Use a druid, get druid to level 18 and get seal form. Swimming up and down the coast is much easier when you're fast and don't need air.
Download the addon "Gatherer". This will help you by keeping track of where stranglekelp appears. Herbs have pre-designated spawn locations, however they aren't always spawned. This addon will allow you to map out specific points so you can avoid areas that never seem to have it.
Places I've found for stranglekelp that are fairly safe for level 18 are Westfall and Darkshore. I personally prefer Westfall because the coast is easier to navigate.

I've been consistently selling stranglekelp for 3g/stack and haven't had much success at higher prices.

I also send my kelp to another account which is stationed near the AH. There is an hour delay in sending items through mail, but it helps me avoid flying to IF every time I need to sell.

i hour and only 15 dude go to wetlands and swim up and down the north and west side of there and ull get about 20 in 30 mins. lvl 28-29 in the north lvl 23-24 in the west

On Earthen Ring, the single biggest users of Strangle are alchemists making Elixir of Defense for cloth and leather armor guys. Don't know a druid or rogue who would get into a fight without one of these; can't speak for cloth armor guys. Defense potions of all strengths are probably the biggest sellers at the ER AH, and while the prices might not be as high as some other servers, you will sell everything you can make within the 8-hour slot.

Thanks for some of the hunting tips; my alchemist was having a tough time finding enough. She's a druid and aquatic form is simply killer.

Zoram Strand is by far the best place to gather kelp. In about an hour and a half i had 43 stranglekelp total.

I've been getting about 10-12g (way too much IMO, but i dont complain) per stack of 20. You just have to sell when there isn't any other kelp in the AH.

I gather with my shaman, i use water walking and then just dive down when i find an herb.

Several people here have said Wetlands is the best place to find this. I must agree, and there are enough unguarded spots that even at low levels it's not too hard to get.

For those who are not:
A) undead;
B) warlocks with the breathing buff;
C) druids with aquatic form; or
D) using a breathing potion;

There is a simple method to getting this seaweed without too much danger to oneself. Someone used the term "water walking", and I think this might be what was meant.

Basically, one swims across the surface of semideep water, with the Find Herbs function turned on. When stranglekelp is located, swim until you are practically "on top" of the stranglekelp on the minimap, then swim straight down. Once you spot the kelp visually, change your course to get close to it (if it's unguarded). Harvest it, then swim straight up. You should be back with plenty of breath bar to spare.

It's best to use this method at Wetlands, some distance from shore. Generally stranglekelp far offshore is unguarded.

All along the west coast of Ghostlands you will find this weed. One trip North or South usually gains me 12+ pieces in about 10-15 min.
Let me add, I find more in the deeper water.

If u walk from Ratchet to Northwatch hold along the shore, u will find alot of stranglekelp. Gave me a stack in an hour. Sold for 5g on ah per stack. Makes a good living for low lvls who have herbs. Just watch out for the mobs there, they are quite annoying.

Off coast north of Menethil Harber drank water breathing poition that lasts 30 minutes hervested 26 Stanglekelp in 20 minutes - sell stack of 20 on my server for 12g not to shabby!

Must have caught a farming day...I wanted to farm some of this herb to make some lesser mana potions for my alt. Got 12 from Zoram Strand. Went to Wetlands and didn't fare much better, however, there was a lot more in the far and deep waters of Southshore.

On my server they go for about 18g to 20g a stack, it sucks a ton because my twink priest burns through mana pots like theres no tomorrow. 's a good thing i made my friend go alch/herb, now he's a rich sob, n I get my steady stream of pots. Farmin' these is pretty cake no matter where you go.

U can catch a lot of SK in margins of tanaris in floating reckages with 160 skill and bobles u catch mithril boxes and in there there are SK bolts of runecloth mageweave green item i even had a blouted fish that inside gave me a star ruby ............

I was able to get 43 in around 40 minutes off the cost of Silverpine Forest. just swam up and down collecting them and the mobs are lvl 13-15. easy to get there if your horde

Another great place is to just swim from Western Strand to the Eastern Strand (or vice-versa) in Hillsbrad. I saw one Stranglekelp, when I swam over to get it, another one appeared on the map and I just followed them along the way, usually always dropped 2-3 per gather, too. :)

As an alliance mage passing through horde lands, my find herbs noted strangekelp at the bottom of Mystral Lake. Of course, there are lv25 Water Elementals who ate me. But for those that can handle it, it should be easy pickins'.

Unless you are a Druid Herbalist with waterform, the only way you are going to farm this stuff successfully is to obtain the "Hydrocane" Rare Staff from Gnommer and get an Azure Silk Belt...any lower lvl tailor can make. The Hydrocane will give you underwater breathing..., the belt adds 15% to your swim speed. Make a macro to switch these out when needed and you are good to go...

Silverpine is not bad for Stranglekelp. According to my Gathermate 2 addon I've got nine nodes off the coast, nearly twice what wowhead is showing. That's weird because I use the wowhead looter and upload my data every day that I play.
