This recipe was the key for me to pound out the last 50-60 points until 300 cooking. Farm the wolves in The Hinterlands for a great drop rate on Tender Wolf Meat and bring a lot of Soothing Spices with you. The recipe stayed yellow until about 295 cooking, so it really helped. These are the best way to get to 300 cooking without fishing!

Better drop rate (around 50%) is from Frenzied Plaguehound found in Eastern Plaguelands.

while its true plague hounds have a slightly higer drop rate its still much faster to farm these from wolfs in the hinterlands.
Plaguehounds are a shared spawn with bats and grubs so you have to do a lot of extra killing whereas the wolfs in hinterlands are not shared spawns and you can kill 5-10 of them in the time you spend finding 2 plaguehounds

If you're skilling up cooking at 70, a good place to farm for the meat is BRD. The hound packs have a good drop rate, the pairs of humanoids are easy enough to kill as well at 70. Clear the front room, maybe clear the houndmaster in there and kill those 10-12 dogs. Run out, reset.

I tried going the hinterlands route, and found that seeking out the wolves was far, far more irritating then it needed to be. Either they were stealthed (necessitating me to spend time running in circles trying to find them), or spread out among the owlbirds. There was no density to them, so it wasn't possible to bring in 6 or 7 at a time and hellfire them down.

Despite the lower drop rate, I found the best mob density in Tanaris. The hyenas (mixed in with the rocs for the 225 quest) around the large bone piles were extremely dense, allowing me to bring in many of them at once (my record was 11, and two rocs) and burn them all down in a few seconds, loot, and ride to the next bone pile (of which there are 5). They also drop mystery meat and red wolf meat, giving you more stuff to cook and sell off to pay for your AH/spices.

I'd like to say that going to Felwood is the fastest way to level up your cooking.
You have Giant Egg of the neutral owls in the area, Tender Wolf Meat of the wolfs and last but not least Bear Flank of the bears.

These give you Monster Omelet 225-250 skill.
Tender Wolf Steak also 225-250 skill.
And Charred Bear Kabobs / Juicy Bear Burger 250-285 skill.

All in all - you get 60 skillups by only farming one area.

this doesn't turn green until 285 cooking. At 300 it's still green.

Confirmed, you can buy the recipe from Truk Wildbeard in the Wildhammer Keep in Hinterlands (alliance). 1g 20s.

This recipe is no longer green at 285, it's grey. Recipes that will level you are Smoked Desert Dumplings, Baked Salmon, Lobster Stw, Mightfish Steak.

In Classic WotLK, this recipe went yellow for me at 250 and green at 262. Still a great recipe to level cooking with, but not as great as indicated here at the time of this comment.
