Jump into the giant whirlpool in Darkshore and go for a ride. Kill the Demon Hunter on the other side and you'll get the item that starts the quest that gives this achievement.

Since this seems to be a 'secret' (since there's no quest to take you there, and that's what the achievement says anyway,) could it be a hint of the next hero class? ;)

The whirlpool is located at around 53, 32 and is called "Maw of the Void". Jump in, you'll experience a short cinematic and end up in another area. Work your way up and kill the last mob, loot its quest item and start the quest. Go back down, talk to the NPC standing around where you came in to go back. Turn the quest in Auberdine and get your achievement!

This is an Alliance Only Achievement. The quest item does not drop for Horde, and if it did, you would not be able to speak to the Alliance NPC to turn it in.

This will probably never come up for anyone else, but... I jumped in the maw while exploring as a horde character. Now several months ago I was sitting around bored in Org, and decided to kill the Cenarion Circle NPC near the flight master's tower. So when I fell down here I was unfriendly with Cenarion, and thus unable to leave this cave without hearthing

Moral of the story; It's probably a bad idea to go to war with cenarion circle

I believe everyone is free to their own presumptions, but it is not a 'hint' at the next class. Blizzard did, indeed, state that they did not intend to add another hero class/class because of the balancing problem with the new addition of the DK still not where they want it.

If anything, my guess is that it's just an addition to show that this Shattering has revealed more than just new characters and lore, but old lore and characters, such as the demon hunters in training, outcasts of the world, in hiding.

Don't just jump in from the edge.

Use the path and follow it in, that's how the cut-scene starts.

Will also get the Going Down? achievement from this without taking damage.

Beyond the balance concern, which is a valid one, we don't want to over-saturate World of Warcraft with different classes. We want to make sure each class has a very distinct set of core mechanics from other classes. Continually introducing new classes can tend to bring about a feeling of redundancy if we're not fully comfortable with developing an entirely new set of mechanics distinct from the current classes.

This does not mean that we'll never consider adding new classes to the game as time moves on, but we're pretty happy with the play styles represented by the classes currently available.

While this is from late '09, it pretty much says there are no plans to implement another class (soon)
Just look at the Sunwalker example: lore-wise, its own class, but too close to the Paladin to be its own class in the game. Of course the devs likely didn't think of Sunwalkers first, then decided to emulate them as Paladins, but rather decided to give Tauren the Paladin (and Priest) class and created the Sunwalkers for that purpose, but that shows as well that they'd rather not implement a new ingame class.

Except the quest text specifically states he was killed by Maiev. Maiev was vigilantly guarding Illidan in a barrow den deep underground for ten-thousand years before Illidan was released, and spent her time afterwards obsessively hunting him down. There were no Demon Hunters in her way, apart from the 'New' Demon Hunters being trained by Illidan, who were killed by players in an SMV group quest. Even if Maiev did fight a few 'off-screen', none of Illidan's Demon Hunters who weren't specifically named (and killed) were described as being more than half-trained Blood Elves. There's no reason to believe that Maiev had the time or motivation to kill any other major Hunters, meaning this dude has to be (or is extremely likely to be) a ghost of Illidan using another name for whatever reason.
There's also absolutely no way Blizzard's quest writers wouldn't notice the significance of having a demon hunter NPC yell that "You are not prepared", which makes me wonder if they weren't trying to imply that this guy is more than just a pleb. That's not exactly hard evidence, though.
Oh, and judging by WC3 and BC, only Demon Hunters trained by Illidan and Illidan himself use Metamorphosis; he's shown in there to get it by draining the skull of Gul'dan, and his minions by draining fel energy from demons. There's no evidence that any non Illidari Demon Hunters can/do use Metamorphosis, which is another little piece of evidence suggesting that this guy is connected to/is Illidan.

I played a Worgen character in Darkshore, and, on the advice of another player, I jumped into the Maw of the Void (the really big whirlpool in North Darkshore) and I was "sucked down the drain" to another area. I got the Going Down achievement on entering (due to the drop). There is a Cenarion Circle druid sitting there. Ignore her for now. Go up the embankment, fight a few undead, then you will see a Demon Hunter at the top. Kill him and he will drop a quest item that gives a quest to go to Ranger Glynda Nal'shea in Lor'Danel. Upon turning it in, the achievement will be gained. I have it on my worgen hunter.
I wonder if there is a Horde equivalent. Anyone know?

When I got there the first time, Telarius was not present at the top of the ramp. However talking to the NPC at the bottom, exiting, and then jumping back into the Maw fixed it for me.

I tried this with my 85 mage recently and found that he doesn't drop any loot if you one shot him! After a few respawns and still no loot, tried again without any weapons equipped and minus my molten armour. He then goes into a 2nd phase at about half HP, where he gets larger. Dropped the quest item that time.

It is more likely that your pet or armor one-shot him. In that case, as you would not have caused any damage, you would not be eligible for any loot. This happens to hunters and warlocks all the time when their pets kill something.

Something that hasn't been mentioned. you dont have to do ANY quests beforehand to get this achievement.

just walk down the ramp and jump into the void.

grab the quest starter item
turn in quest

Just to clarify what someone said, you MUST jump into the whirlpool from atop the cliffs. Just swimming down into it won't trigger the event.

I think this achievement is currently broken.
I've had several characters try to jump in while completely smashed so they can get Drunken Stupor for Brewfest, since going down into the cave under the maw automatically gives what you need for Going Down too.

I actually had a couple toons successfully do this in the first couple days of the Holiday. But after that, each character who tried just jumped into the whirlpool and ended up swimming around in the water. No "cutscene" of getting sucked into the whirlpool, and no going into the cave beneath. And I did everything the exact same way as I did when it worked the first couple times.
Is this simply a bug, or is there something more I should know?

(FYI the toons that succeeded had already achieved Ghosts in the Dark previously, so I know you can go down there even if you have before. And one of the ones who just failed hasn't even gotten that acheivement yet. So that's obviously not a factor.)

*edit* Never mind, I solved the problem. It turns out there's a small ledge of solid ground right at water level with the whirlpool, which I think is there in case a character falls/swims into the pool by mistake and doesn't get sucked in, so it allows them climb out of the water then climb up a path so they get back to normal ground level of the area. 2 of my toons jumped down from the NORTHSIDE cliffs (where the smaller river pours into the Maw), and landed on this little patch of solid ground which they couldn't see easily from the clifftop. I had one toon climb her way back up, travel around to the SOUTHSIDE cliffs (which are much higher, covered by a larger, wider waterfall area), go to the edge of cliff in the middle of the area of river pouring over (where I could see rocks below me at the Maw's edge), drink the rest of her alcohol, and jump in... Successfully got AND . Unfortunately I was so happy to have just gotten that done, that I hearthed out right away & forgot to kill the dude to get the quest item for . I'm such a dork.

I did this achievement on my shaman, a few minutes ago. Before you jump into the pool, you may want to cancel your Water Walking buff. Just sayin'.

For those with flying, you can just hover over the center of the Maw and dismount. =) And isn't it nice to be able to get the Going Down achievement without taking any damage? Beats me flinging myself off the Scryer's Tier a few times like I did with my Death Knight. lol

Ok, I was pretty confused when attempting this achievement solely because I knew nothing about it. There is a lot of random information in this thread, which didn't seem to paint a full clear picture - so here it is step by step:

Go to around 52, 32 to Maw of the Void, in Darkshore.

If you have a flying mount, just dismount over the whirlpool, if you don't fly, just jump in from up high.

Once you jump in, there will be a cut scene, then a loading screen to take you underneath the whirlpool.

As mentioned in a previous post, there is a Cenarion Druid at the bottom - ignore it; talking to the druid will port you out to a cave, you don't want that just yet.

Fight a couple ghosts - I had to kill exactly 2 (pretty non-threatening as a level 85, of course)

Fight a demon looking thing - he drops a quest that you need for the achievement.

Now go talk to the Cenarion Druid - to port out.

Turn in the quest that dropped from the demon you killed (make sure you click on it in your bags to accept it.

Congrats, you now have this achievement.
