So... To be "Salty Darkroot" (or whatever your name is) you must:

Gain 350 Fishing and buy "Grand Master" level.
Fish every school type in Outland and Northrend.
Fish every junk node type in the game.
Fish in Orgrimmar+Stormwind.
Win the Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza (Retroactive if you have the reward in your inventory).
Have/have used the Magical Crawdad Box from Terokkar.
Catch a rare fish (Max Weight/Weapon).
Do all 5 fishing dailies from Barlo.
Fish up Gahz'ranka in ZG.
Fish up The Lurker Below in SSC.
Learn Find Fish via a Weather Beaten Journal.
Fish up every coin from the Dalaran Fountain.
Catch 1,000 fish total (NOTE: You will probably get this from doing all of the above :P)

So, you might want to buy one or two concentration aids :)

The hardest of these requirements will be winning the Sunday Fishing Contest obviously. Guess being VERY lucky is going to be required to get this title.

It is probably very true that catching Mr. Pinchy is easier than winning the fishing tournament in STV. But don't think that the competition is extremely hard to win or based on luck. I have won it 4 times - so I could get both rewards on each of my characters - I didn't get any help from friends at all, and I could surely have won it many more times if I had bothered to come back every Sunday (but that would be pretty stupid when I already had both rewards.

Surely, I can't win it every time. There are always bad fishing days and other skilled fishermen who are "stealing" the prize just as you are about to HS back to Booty Bay. But it really is a matter of skill. It does take practice and you can't expect to win on your first try. But if you come back to practive every Sunday and make sure to get better, then you will win at some point.

I guess it may be harder if some servers for some reason are very populated with fishers during the tournament. By the way, I also expect that when Wrath comes out and people learn about the achievement, there will be more competition, so better try and start to get it now.

So my conclusion is: The tournament is like a tough raid boss. There are some random/luck-factors and you can't win every time. But in the end, it's still a matter of preparation and it's up to you if you can do it or not.

If Mr. Pinchy really is as rare as some people say, then I would rather go back and win the tournament again if I could chose that instead.

How to make fishing less boring
There's no denying it, fishing gets boring after about the 100th time you throw your bobble into the waters to catch, for example, this fish. Here are some of the techniques i use to make it fun.

Step 1.
Download/buy some comedies (I for example watched seasons 1-5 of Scrubs while i fished my way through 1-320 fishing ), movies, any kind of motionpicture that you enjoy and could watch for +4 hours.

Step 2.
Download BS player/Media player classic (Those are atleast the ones i know that have this feature) and go to Options. There is an option called "Always on top". Switch that on. Then, turn on your Scrubs or whatever you want to watch, and place it so it doesn't get in the way of your bobble (Bobler or whatever that thing is that floats on the surface of the water).

Step 3
We're almost done. Now, go to your fishing spot (Ironforge or Orgimmar in case you're after these two lovely's), and bid your Fishing skill to some easy to press (F for example) button. Then turn on "Auto-loot" (Remember, you still have to press "Yes i want to loot this BoP fish" button when you do finally get this lovely piece of epicness) from WoW's options. Next order of business, go to Sound options, and switch it on so it makes sounds when a fish has been "caught" (They are either Sound effects or Ambient sounds, so turn both on.). Now finely toon it so you can listen to your show and you can hear it when the fish is caught. Now, fish away!

This has worked for like +2 years for me now, and i finally have a place to post my comments ^_^. Hope you enjoy'd my little tricks and tips, and i hope to see some lovely "Salty" tittled people running around!

Achieved 11/16/08 at 4am server time by Megahoof of Deathwing. (Now known as Salty Megahoof)

The last part I finished was the Coin Master.

I didn't have to worry about the fishing tournament as I won that two years ago, and I'm glad, since people are even more adamant about winning that, and its being won on average 10 minutes faster now than when I won it.

Good luck to anyone else going after this title! Onto "Chef"!

Frankly, I'm glad they put the Fishing Competition in this one... Most of us (who have it) were Salty in spirit long before you became interested in fishing and as such, had accomplished the fishing tourney when no one else cared. The early fisherman gets the title... like the bird and the worm... cept the bird does not get the worm because we already got up earlier than the bird, killed it, cooked it's eggs, ate them, then put the worm on our hooks and fished with it.

Well, I got my last achievement today by fishing up Mr. Pinchy and getting the crawdad pet on the first wish, hence getting the title Salty ^^

I've been neglecting leveling and raiding a bit since the expansion to get this, and getting Kalu'ak exalted in the progress. It's been an awesome achievement to hunt and I don't see any other one going to give me such a good time, perhaps maybe getting Explorer without a flying mount, which is definately a close second.

According to a GM it is a Homonym for male reproductive fluid and NOT a commercial fishing enterprise in Naknek Alaska... However, the name Seamänner is acceptable (means same thing in german) because it is not one of the major two languages (Spanish & English) spoken by the desired game audience, and also no longer a direct homonym because of the added "er" at the end of the name.

So I know you're thinking about it, but don't do it! I got lucky because I spent money on the name change and he allowed me to pick a new one, you might not be as lucky... blizzard has been known to give you random stupid RP names.

I highly recommend to all potential angler's out there that first and foremost you go to STV's west coast and fish in each and every node you find. You are looking for the "Weather-Beaten Journal" it requires fishing skill of 100; however, it teaches the "find fish" ability. Makes these achievements much simpler to do.

I have found that an excellent time-waster, if you don't want to watch movies or your computer can't handle it, is the Bejeweled Addon, which is officially supported by Popcap, who makes the game, if you're afraid of malware. :P Thanks to this baby I fished my way Salty tonight. Also probably 1000 casts just for a silly heavy fish, but who's counting? Salty Lysanna will reign supreme until my cuisine can take over (then Chef Lysanna!).

Does anyone know if there's talk of removing winning the STV Extravaganza from the requirements? I play on a high pop server (900+ queue at peak hours! Ouch!) and I know that it would be one in a million to win the tourney.

Not considering those who got the Fishing Competition out of the way pre-achievement system, only 52 people can conceivably get this achievement a year, per realm. The competition is once per Sunday, and there are only 52 weeks in the year. Not a very easy achievement.

millions of fishes will curse the name of those who want to be "salty" :D
and "concentration aid" is a good idea, but using the right equipment can help as well

Getting this title is most likely one of the harder and defiently most time consuming ones in the game so far, some of the raiding achievment is harder and so is insane title. Geting this title will grant your some major respect hehe, i am still working on it myself but i got more than half the criteria done.

So keep going all who is doing this and be a true fisherman!

which would be "Terror of the Sea".

As a suggestion to all those seeking the title while what Ballsworth said is true those are some of the harder achievements I would recommend that potential Salty's keep a few things in mind. First of all I would put Mr Pinchy at the top of the priority list, if you don't get lucky with wishes this can be the largest time sink in this meta. I'm on my third pinchy already and have yet to get the pet that means I've been waiting 12 days already just based on the cooldowns of the damn things. I got the one that didn't get away and the tourney in the same weekend on the other hand after a concentrated effort. So I recommend going for Pinchy early as he can really set you back time wise. Also don't overlook Old Man Barlowned, make sure to get that one done early as well, I wasn't thinking about and have been waiting 3 weeks now on my server and still haven't seen the one quest I'm missing from him. Anyway enjoy working on this achievement people, hopefully I too will soon be joining the ranks of all the Salty's out there.

Edit: Got my Crawdad pet finally... Old Man Barlow is still holding out on me... only thing stopping me from becoming Salty

If you're like me and never train fishing but have reason to want "salty" title, then here's what you'll want to do from level 1 fishing skill:
-make sure to do a Shattrath fishing daily on your first day before your dailies reset and then every day after
-if you're close to Saturday/Sunday at 2pm server time, prepare for the fishing contest as I hear it's very difficult to win so you want to start trying asap.
-set yourself up with a movie or tv show "Always on top" as other posters have described. Really makes hours of fishing go by like nothing.
-clear bag space (20 should be plenty)
-head to Stonebull Lake (or any other starting zone inland water) to start on the rare fish. (this got me from 1-260ish skill)
-find your fish finder book.

-fish up Mr. Pinchy (and hopefully get lucky like me and get him in less than an hour)
-fish the coins in dalaran (got me to 379)
And now I wait until saturday/sunday for the contests. I hope that doing my homework will result in me winning one of these and I will be salty.

Total PLAYED hours from skill 1 fishing to 379 and having completed all non-contest/non-daily achievements: appx 26.
Total REAL TIME from start until now: 40 hours (a few hours first night, sleep, full fishing day, sleep, an hour to finish up).
NOTE: I HIGHLY recommend NOT doing this all in one sitting like I did. My eyes burned - bad.

Keep in mind:
Fishing in pools only requires skill level 1!
Use lures to find less junk (especially in the dalaran fountain which yielded a lot of junk for me)
Ignore the 1000 Fish and 350 skill achievements. You will get those just by doing the rest, and the 350 skill takes longer.
The SSC and ZG bosses can be summoned solo. I just got near the entrance to the instance, invited a random person from dalaran, converted to raid, zoned in, and then eventually they would drop group which left me in the instance just fine to do my business. NOTE: if YOU drop group, you will be teleported to the nearest GY. Also go naked for lurker, he will kill you, but the ZG one gives you time to hearth after getting the achievement.
Be patient. I cannot emphasize enough using the "always on top" video method.

Edit: Just won my STV contest on the first try. paid 6 people to help me.
-1 retadin to stay by and cleanse/heal/guard me with crusader aura.
-2 pvpers to stay a bit down the coast of me (1 in either direction) looking for the next pool and killing competition.
-2 other pvpers to go all around STV coasts messing people up (killing/fishing their stuff).
-1 other fisher/pvper to go fish in nodes of people of my faction that we couldnt kill.
Paid them each 500g for a win (or 150g for a fail). but we won and i happily dished out 2500g (1 person was RL friend and didnt take money).
Also make sure to scout the area before you start. have a vent. be in an unpopulated area with a lot of pools before it begins. I chose the northern end of the south east coast with the bloodsails at the south and trolls at the north. Worked like a charm. Set hearth to BB before hand. won at 3:20ish.

You guys have no idea how many hours I've spent straight trying to get the last achievement for this title on my main... "One That Didn't Get Away"... I tried Northrend, Orgrimmar, Stranglethorn, even Outland. I'm starting to think Blizzard hates me and doesn't want a character with the name "Mönsteraggö" to get this title. Which is odd considering I won the Kalu'Ak fishing tourney the very first time I entered it. :'(

This title, as opposed to it's similarly-themed cousin, "Chef", is positively a nightmare to get on high- or mid-population servers. Even if it isn't a PvP server, you'll still have a huge number of competitors for both fishing tourneys about every week. If you are REALLY serious about this title but find that you have 20+ people crowding Stranglethorn or the shark turn-in in Dalaran, a transfer to a lower pop server may be the easiest (and fastest) way to get the tourney's done.

The most annoying part for me was fishing up all the coins in Dalaran with the constant Horde-mounted-on-mammoth-jumping-in-the-fountain part ! God how annoying some people can be...

This title is not for the weak, it takes alot of patience! With that said, it doesn't have to take very long at all if you're determined. I had zero in fishing and 3 weeks later I was Salty.
Both me and my girlfriend got the fish-mace Steelscale Crushfish from fishing at the Dark Moon Faire. Both within same week.
The Mr. Pinchy companion I got from Mr. Pinchy himself after fishing him up in the heights of Terokkar.
I won the Northrend fishing contest the second time I tried it. The person that won it the first time I tried gave me the tip to fish at the coast in Dragonblight and it worked.
The Lurker below in Serpentshrine Cavern is easy to get if you're 85. I had a friend boosting me since I was only lvl 80.
Old Man Barlo is annoying since he can give you the same quest over and over. However, everytime you do "Crocolisks in the City" you can get a cute little crocodile companion. There are 4 different colors you can get, so not so frustrating repeating that one since it's fun to collect companions.
Even though the Coinmaster achivement can be frustrating it shouldn't take longer than 2 days if you invest the time. And you get a cool little coin at the end of it.
I play Horde so fishing in Stormwind wasn't hard either. One of the waterwalking potions and I just stood on the water outside the harbour, far from both players and guards.
The Scavenger was easy too once I searched wowhead for where each wreckage could be found in Azeroth.
Patience is the key, but all the small rewards on the way (like Mr. Pinchy, the Titanium Seal of Dalaran or the crocodile companions) makes it fun!

Just got this achievement, took me almost a year to finish. Last three months I was forced to farm mr. pinchy and I didn't cath him until few days ago. This is the achievement I respect the most, because you need lots of patience and luck!
